Santa Cruz Movement & Nature House is not your typical beach hotel, but a place that nourishes both body and mind. It is an adults-only retreat set on a 12-hectare estate, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the lush countryside of Torres Vedras.
Just a short walk from Praia Azul, one of the most beautiful and least crowded beaches along the Lisbon coast, this hotel offers a concept that’s truly well thought out: physical activity as the foundation of well-being. Not as an obligation, but as an invitation. Hiking along the cliffs, surfing the Atlantic waves, yoga at sunrise, or simply cycling through the countryside. And when you’ve had enough exercise, there’s the spa, the heated indoor pool, and a restaurant serving fresh local cuisine.
It’s a place you leave feeling different than when you arrived.
Santa Cruz Movement & Nature House is located in the municipality of Torres Vedras, along a coastline stretching over 20 kilometers, about 70 kilometers north of Lisbon. It is a region that is virtually unknown outside of Portugal. And that is precisely what makes it so appealing.
The beaches are wide, clean, and spacious. No mass tourism, no rows of umbrellas. Praia Azul, the neighboring beach a 15-minute walk from the hotel, features an extensive dune system that is even part of the Natura 2000 network—a protected area with native dune flora and a migration route for birds via the Sizandro River. Praia Formosa and Praia do Mexilhoeira, further along the coast, are even quieter and wilder. With cliffs, rock pools, and in the fall, sometimes waterfalls cascading down the rock faces.
Santa Cruz’s most famous landmark is Penedo do Guincho: an imposing rocky islet off the coast that can be reached on foot at low tide—an almost mythical passage between land and sea.
Further inland lies Torres Vedras, a historic town featuring a Moorish castle, the famous Linhas de Torres—the defensive line with which Wellington held back Napoleon’s troops—and a lively market. The beach inspired poets such as Antero de Quental and João de Barros; in 2016, an official poetry trail was even opened, taking visitors to the very spots they once walked.
In short: a region full of character, nature, and depth. And just an hour’s drive from Lisbon.
Santa Cruz Movement & Nature House was built on a clear philosophy: exercise isn’t just a side note, but the cornerstone of a healthy and happy stay.
The 12-hectare estate stretches between the sea and the countryside, with walking trails leading directly to the beach and the surrounding nature. Free bicycles are available for you to use, Nordic walking poles hang on the wall, and the instructors (from yoga to tai chi, from surfing to stand-up paddleboarding) are passionate specialists who take their craft seriously.
The activities are included in the price of your stay. There is no list of daily “extra charges.” You pay for your stay, and a full program is included if you’d like it.
The hotel has 14 rooms, all with balconies and ocean views. Not as a luxurious extra, but as a natural part of the experience. The rooms are tastefully decorated with attention to detail: underfloor heating, blackout curtains, rain showers, bathrobes, and slippers. And because of the hotel’s small size, it’s never crowded and always quiet.
“Santa Cruz Movement & Nature Hotel is a magical place where comfort, peace, and relaxation come together. From check-in to check-out, you could feel the warmth of the staff. Highly recommended.”
We offer a wide range of services led by specialists. Here are just a few examples of what we can do:
If you’d rather just relax, you don’t have to explain yourself. A book, a lounge chair, a view of the sea—that’s just as valid here as a sunrise surf session.
The Ocyan Spa is the tranquil side of the resort. It offers massages, facials, a heated indoor pool with a jacuzzi, and a spacious sun terrace. After a day of hiking along the cliffs or surfing the Atlantic waves, this is the perfect place to let your body completely unwind.
The treatments are performed by specialized and experienced therapists.
The restaurant serves a daily breakfast buffet, brunch, lunch, and dinner. The focus is on local ingredients and freshly prepared dishes. Vegetarian and vegan options are available. There is also a bar with a relaxed atmosphere—perfect for enjoying a glass of local wine after dinner while taking in the ocean view.
In addition to individual overnight stays, Santa Cruz Movement & Nature House also offers multi-day retreats based on scientific insights and led by movement specialists:
There are also special surf retreats for beginners (Surf Origins) and advanced surfers (Surf Essentials). The hotel also offers space for corporate events.
Yes. Praia Azul is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. In addition, Praia Formosa, Praia do Mexilhoeira, and Santa Cruz Beach are easily accessible by bike or car. The hotel offers free bike rentals.
Most activities—yoga, Pilates, Nordic walking, tai chi, cycling, and hiking on the grounds—are included in the stay. A separate program or retreat rate applies to surfing and water sports.
Absolutely. The hotel offers single rooms, and its concept of “small scale, personal attention, and shared activities” makes it particularly welcoming to solo travelers.
About 70 kilometers, or roughly an hour’s drive. A perfect distance for a long weekend or a multi-day retreat, with the option of spending a day visiting Lisbon.
The hotel is open year-round. Spring (April–June) and fall (September–November) are ideal for hikers and cyclists. In the summer, the beaches are at their best, though the area can also get busier. Winter is ideal for surfers; the waves are bigger then and the coast is quiet.
