Nor is it a villa. You should know that before you go there, or you’ll be in for a surprise—in the best possible way. It’s a group of restored historic (fishermen’s) houses in the village of Kvalnes on the Lofoten Islands: a former brine factory, a cod liver oil distillery, a fisherman’s hut, and a farmhouse on the adjacent Soleng farm.

Owner Aaslaug is a well-known figure in the Norwegian cultural scene. She is assisted by documentary filmmaker Tor Edvin, who also happens to be a gifted chef. This is truly a place to stay a while and slow down. You can spend hours gazing out the window at the impressive panorama.

Upon request (and highly recommended), you can watch the impressive Norwegian film about the history of the location in the on-site restaurant. Afterward, you’ll experience the authenticity of Villa Lofoten in a way that no description can match.

The view is stunning, and the light changes constantly. And the restaurant, which requires a reservation, serves local produce prepared by Tor Edvin, who is also an Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker.

“Aaslaug has poured her heart into this place. You can feel it in everything—from the walls to the evening program.”

The unique vacation homes

You’ll be staying in carefully restored homes. The original atmosphere has been preserved as much as possible. Modern art adorns the walls, and details of the area’s fishing heritage can be seen everywhere. It’s a wonderful place to stay for an extended period or, for example, to work in peace and quiet.

The Saltery, the former brine factory

Spacious and bright, restored using reclaimed materials. Scandinavian contemporary art on the walls, recycled furniture that reflects traditional craftsmanship. Ocean and harbor views. Sleeps up to 6 people.

The Steamery, the cod liver oil distillery

One of the most distinctive buildings on the property. Renovated with care to preserve the original structure; dark wood, historic details preserved, and an intimate atmosphere. Suitable for 2 people.

The Fisherman’s Cabin, the fisherman’s cabin

Small, authentic, and right by the water. The most intimate option, located in the secluded conservation area of the fishing village. Perfect if you really want to immerse yourself. Accommodates up to 4 people.

The Farmhouse, near Soleng

At the adjacent farmhouse, just a stone’s throw from the harbor. More space, private kitchen, fireplace. Views of the mountains and meadows. Villa Lofoten’s summer restaurant is located here (by reservation, featuring local ingredients). Accommodates up to 4 people.

Edvardbua

Cozy and bright apartment, close to the sea, perfect for adventurers, friends, or couples. Two beds in the loft. Sleeps up to 2 people.

Sigurdbua

At the end of the traditional “rorbu” (fisherman’s cottage). A cozy spot for adventurers, couples, or friends. One sleeping area in the loft and one on the ground floor.

Slow Down in Kvalnes

Kvalnes isn’t really suited for intense hiking or fast-paced day trips. It’s the place to truly slow down. Cycling along the coast. Birdwatching. Sitting by the water and understanding how people have lived here for centuries. In winter, you can spot the long-tailed duck here, with its distinctive, almost surreal call. And you’ll see the razorbill.

I recommend staying at least 3 nights. That way, you can really experience the place instead of just rushing through it. Plus, every accommodation has a workspace—a great spot for inspiration.

Why Villa Lofoten is a good fit for Nature Travel Lab

Booking directly with the owner—that’s the foundation of Nature Travel Lab.
