The sun is just beginning to rise, it’s still pleasantly cool, and the Adriatic Sea glistens in the distance. Half an hour later, you’re sitting with an espresso in a Baroque square that has remained unchanged for centuries. This is Salento, in the south of Puglia, and it’s one of the most beautiful cycling destinations in Europe.

At Nature Travel Lab, we believe that the best trips are the ones where you really get a feel for the place. Exploring Salento by bike gives you exactly that. No tour bus, no rushed itinerary: you set the pace, and the route takes care of the rest.

Why Salento as a cycling destination

Salento has everything a cyclist could wish for: a mostly flat landscape with gentle slopes here and there, roads with hardly any traffic, and a mix of coastal scenery, culture, and culinary experiences that other destinations rarely offer.

What you’ll encounter along the way:

Two seas in one trip: the rustic Ionian coast to the west, the rugged Adriatic coast to the east

Baroque architecture in Lecce, Nardò, and Otranto: beautiful enough to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Wild nature from the WWF Le Cesine Reserve to the karst caves near Castro

Authentic villages where tourism hasn’t taken over yet

Local food and drinks that will genuinely surprise you: from fresh orecchiette to Primitivo wine and almond milk espresso

And what about the flat landscape? Lecce is known as the “Florence of the South,” and that’s no exaggeration: the Baroque façades of churches and palazzos are carved from the soft, golden-yellow Lecce stone and glow in the evening light. Visit the Roman amphitheater in the heart of the city, explore the artisanal shops selling papier-mâché and ceramics, and end the day on a terrace with a glass of Negroamaro.

Day 2: From Lecce to Gallipoli (± 50 km): toward the Ionian Sea

The morning of Day 2 marks the real start. You’ll cycle through a lush landscape of vineyards and olive groves, pass the impressive Copertino Castle, and ride into Nardò’s Baroque Piazza Salandra—a square that looks like a movie set. Just off the coast lies the unspoiled Porto Selvaggio: rocky shores, Mediterranean scrub, and a bay you won’t soon forget. You’ll arrive in Gallipoli just in time for one of Salento’s most beautiful sunsets, at Purità Bay.

Day 3: From Gallipoli to Santa Maria di Leuca (± 50 km): the tip of the boot

You’ll cycle along the Ionian coast, past small harbors, beaches, and fishing villages. At Punta Ristola, you’ll feel it: here you’re standing at the tip of the Italian boot, where the Ionian and Adriatic Seas meet.
