class="wp-block-paragraph">Fife is a Scottish region that often falls just off the beaten path, but immediately leaves a lasting impression. It lies between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Tay, with a coastline on the eastern side full of cliffs, small beaches, and little harbors where the fishing tradition is still evident. In the East Neuk, villages are strung together like beads on a necklace: colorful cottages, winding alleys, and the smoky aroma of a fish shack in the harbor.

Inland, the landscape becomes gentler: rolling farmland, patches of forest, and the Lomond Hills rising like green ridges in the distance. And then, of course, there’s St. Andrews: historic, lively, and steeped in golfing legend. Fife feels compact, varied, and perfect for Slow travel: a new view every day, without having to spend hours in the car.

Practical Information: How to Get There (Without a Car)

Toward Life

Train: ScotRail from Edinburgh (approx. 1 hr 20 min); the station in Leven is centrally located.

Bus: including Stagecoach (X60/X58) from Edinburgh via Inverkeithing/Kirkcaldy.

Back from St. Andrews

There are connections to Edinburgh and Glasgow from the St. Andrews bus station.

If you’re traveling by train, you’ll often go through Leuchars (a short taxi or bus ride from St. Andrews).

Outlander Tip

Attention Outlander fans: this coastal walk takes you through a region where a surprising number of Outlander scenes were filmed. You don’t have to make a huge detour to see them. With just one or two short side trips, you can visit the best locations.

1. Falkland is 1940s/1960s Inverness
The village of Falkland (Fife) appears in *Outlander* as 20th-century Inverness. It’s a pleasant place to stroll around, taking in sights like the Bruce Fountain and the village square. Perfect as a stop on the way to Fife or as a mini-excursion from St. Andrews.

2. Culross: Cranesmuir & Claire’s Herb Garden
Scenes from the fictional Cranesmuir were filmed in Culross (around the Mercat Cross), and the gardens at Culross Palace also appear as Claire’s herb garden. This is a wonderful “time capsule” stop if you have a free afternoon.

3. Dysart Harbor: Le Havre (Season 2)
Dysart Harbor stood in for the French port of Le Havre. Bonus: This harbor is located along the Fife Coastal Path, so it really feels like an Outlander moment without the theme being forced upon you. It’s the perfect spot to visit on your arrival day in Leven (or if you’re in the area).

Bonus (easy to pick up on the route): The Reaper in Anstruther
During your walking day via Anstruther, you can (if timing permits) stop by the harbour/Scottish Fisheries Museum. The Reaper is located there, the historic ship seen in the Dysart/Le Havre scenes (please note: access to the ship may be limited due to restoration).

Sustainable Tips for When You’re on the Go (Small Impact, Big Difference)

Bring a reusable water bottle and a lunchbox (a packed lunch without extra waste).

Use public transportation whenever possible: this trip is well-suited for it.

Stay on the trails near sensitive dunes and cliff edges, and take your trash with you when you leave.

Read more here about the St. Cuthbert’s walking route in Scotland.

Fife Coastal Path on the map

Fife Coastal Path Highlights: 5-Day Self-Guided Hiking Trip from Leven to St. Andrews Want to experience Scotland at your own pace?
