A few days with the same view. The scent of the forest after a night of rain. And a table where the food doesn’t come from far away, but from nearby—from the garden, the countryside, or the region’s traditions?

Casa del Chiodo is just such a place: a lively borgo in the heart of the forest. This small-scale agriturismo is located in the medieval hamlet of Piloni near Roccastrada (in the province of Grosseto), in the lush countryside between Siena and the Maremma coast. Here, hospitality follows the rhythm of nature. A 19th-century farmhouse with a warm, family-oriented atmosphere, where the days naturally slow down.

Casa del Chiodo at a Glance

Location: Piloni hamlet, Roccastrada (GR), Tuscany

Type: agriturismo / B&B-style farm stay

6 rooms (small-scale)

Open: year-round

Cuisine: locally sourced, farm-to-table, organic ingredients, wood-fired oven

Good to know: Pets are not allowed

“We live and work without waste, in a completely sustainable way. We don’t buy anything at the supermarket, and we don’t use packaged or processed products. Our supply chain is very short: from the garden and the farm to the table. That’s why the menu changes daily, depending on what nature and the earth provide us.”

“Here, you live as people used to. Together with her daughters Irene and Giulia (known for her famous cakes), she is the beating heart of the house. Grandma and Grandpa are the pillars of support, and Grandpa Paolo is the handyman on duty (when he’s not out and about). Casa del Chiodo connects the countryside with tradition. Here, you’re not just a “guest number”—you’re someone they want to get to know by name.

You can really feel that family warmth precisely because everything here is small-scale: you’re not staying in a hotel—you’re staying in a story.

Staying in a 19th-century farmhouse (with modern comforts)

The farmhouse is a 19th-century building that was renovated in 2009 with great attention to original details and the reuse of materials and furnishings.
This means an authentic atmosphere (stone, wood, terracotta), but with comfortable beds and a nice shower.

What to Expect:

Small-scale setting offering peace and privacy (only 6 rooms)

Charming rooms with “old Tuscany” details

The more luxurious rooms and suites are described as having an extra cozy feel (with a fireplace and a private terrace)

If there are multiple guests or a group, apartments in the village are used, but never more than 30 guests

And the best part: you wake up to a landscape that immediately invites you to go outside—with no plan, just to follow a path.

The Kitchen: Local, Farm-to-Table, and the Seasons on Your Plate

If there’s one place where you can really get a sense of a place’s character, it’s at the table. Casa del Chiodo is known for its cuisine, in which traditional local dishes, organic ingredients, and farm-to-table products take center stage. There’s also a wood-fired oven, which adds just that authentic, Tuscan touch.

Important to know (and in keeping with the “slow” philosophy): The restaurant operates by reservation only so that they can cook with care and without waste. And, not least, you can also learn the tricks of the trade yourself. You’ll learn to cook based on what nature has to offer at that moment, and at nature’s own slow pace.

Casa del Chiodo is also an officially recognized educational farm. They produce their own honey; use their own milk to make yogurt and cheese; and source eggs from their own chickens and meat from their own pigs. You’ll learn about their way of life, the animals, and the residents. Their own wine production is limited and is therefore only served immediately after the harvest. The rest of the year, they serve organic local wines.

Breakfast is included, and the atmosphere is cozy: the day begins peacefully, with time to sit back (and not have to do anything for a while).

What can you do in the area?

1. Abbazia di San Galgano (a must-see without mass tourism)

One of the most beautiful day trips in the area: the famous roofless abbey. Abbazia di San Galgano is located about 10 kilometers from Casa del Chiodo.

2. Hiking, forests, and water

In this part of Tuscany, you’ll find peaceful hiking trails through forests and hills. You’ll also find the Canaloni del Torrente Farma: natural swimming spots that are especially popular during the warmer months.

3. Biking & Mountain Biking

This is the kind of terrain that naturally makes you slow down: winding roads, scenic overlooks, and shady forests. Perfect if you enjoy cycling or mountain biking (and with an e-bike, those hills are suddenly pure fun). You can rent bikes at Casa del Chiodo and, if you’d like, set out with a guide.

4. Cooking Workshops & Culinary Experiences

A stay featuring a “0-km” kitchen really calls for just one thing: a day when you don’t plan anything except eating, watching, walking, and coming back.

Why Casa del Chiodo is such a good fit for Nature Travel Lab

At Nature Travel Lab, we seek out places where you don’t just sleep “green,” but where you also experience nature firsthand: tranquility, the outdoors, local traditions, and cuisine that changes with the seasons.

Casa del Chiodo fits into this because it:

Small-scale and family-run (your money stays in the local community)

offers a distinct “km 0” / farm-to-table cuisine featuring organic ingredients

operates by reservation only, with no waste, but with greater attention to detail

makes the landscape itself the main attraction (instead of just checking off all the highlights)

 Authentic agriturismo near Roccastrada

 A family-owned business with a long tradition

 Zero-kilometer and local cuisine

 6 comfortable rooms

Our own organic olive oil and wine

[225,266,222,194
253,233,226,228,209
post-36472","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nature-stay","category-tuscany","category-italy","category-accommodation","tag-agritourism","tag-organic-cuisine","tag-surroundings","tag-bicycle-rental","tag-bnb
["GET
