Casa da Cisterna is a comfortable and charming hotel in an authentic village surrounded by castle ruins. We\u2019re located here in eastern Central Portugal. The hotel consists of several authentic houses with a shared pool.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Casa da Cisterna (cisterna literally means \u201ccistern\u201d) used to be the water storage facility for the entire village. Now it has been transformed into an idyllic boutique hotel with several rooms, suites, and two villas. The old cistern itself has been turned into a swimming pool: you\u2019ll be swimming in a piece of the village\u2019s history, with views across the highlands toward Spain.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Casa da Cisterna at a Glance<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Casa da Cisterna is a small-scale boutique hotel owned by biologists Ana Berliner and Ant\u00f3nio Monteiro in Castelo Rodrigo, one of the twelve Aldeias Hist\u00f3ricas de Portugal (municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, district of Guarda). The hotel features six rooms, three suites, and two villas in restored houses within the medieval walls. It is located between the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional, the Faia Brava Nature Reserve, and the prehistoric rock art of the C\u00f4a Valley (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), about a 2.5-hour drive from Porto and a 1.5-hour drive from Salamanca.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hospitality Comes First at Casa da Cisterna  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ana and Ant\u00f3nio left Lisbon for this beautiful, off-the-beaten-path spot in historic Castelo Rodrigo. Both biologists, they chose the tranquility of rural life in a historic setting over the hustle and bustle of the city. They have created a wonderful, homey hotel in an authentic setting.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ana and her team go out of their way to make sure you have a great time and get to know the beautiful surroundings. A fantastic (local) breakfast is served, and for a delicious dinner, there\u2019s a regional menu every day with plenty of choices. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no set times for breakfast. The table is set with homemade jam, honey, and local cheese, requeij\u00e3o, smoked ham, and fresh orange juice from Barca d\u2019Alva. You\u2019ll need to make reservations in advance for lunch and dinner, and you\u2019ll choose from the daily menu, which features dishes such as oven-baked rice with duck, bacalhau \u00e0 Gomes de S\u00e1, and almond cake. You\u2019re in the eastern part of Central Portugal, not far from the Spanish border. This was once a strategic site for battles and a stop along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Today, it\u2019s a very peaceful spot with beautiful nature and a rich history.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a handful of people live within the walls during the winter; daily life takes place in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, a few kilometers away. At the top of the village stand the ruins of Crist\u00f3v\u00e3o de Moura\u2019s palace, which the residents set on fire in 1640 because he had sided with the Spanish crown. At the foot of the hill lies the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Aguiar.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enjoy the peace and quiet of this quaint little village. Relax by the pool with its stunning views and explore the historic town. Ana and Antonio will be happy to tell you about the local attractions, and they offer guided tours of the area upon request.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Castelo Rodrigo is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/naturetravellab.com\/en\/portugal\/central-portugal\/historic-villages-of-portugal\/\">Aldeias Hist\u00f3ricas de Portugal<\/a>, a group of 12 authentic historic villages that are historically linked and form the basis for a wonderful exploration tour in this lesser-known part of Portugal. Ana is a certified guide and, upon request, takes guests on an evening tour: in the beam of a flashlight, horses, aurochs, and ibex dating back tens of thousands of years come into view.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be sure to include the Museu do C\u00f4a near Vila Nova de Foz C\u00f4a in your plans; it has a restaurant with a view of the valley. Almeida surprises visitors with a perfect star-shaped fortress wall with twelve points. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hiking and Biking in the Douro Internacional Nature Park<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The area is beautiful for walking, hiking, or biking. It\u2019s located on the edge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitportugal.com\/nl\/node\/156080\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.visitportugal.com\/nl\/node\/156080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Douro Internacional Nature Park<\/a>. The GR22 trail winds through historic villages and stunning natural scenery. This long-distance hike covers a total of nearly 600 kilometers, but can, of course, be broken down into shorter sections. On the Spanish side, the landscape continues as the Parque Natural de Arribes del Duero. Ana and Ant\u00f3nio recommend the Arribes do \u00c1gueda near Almofala, a boat trip on the Douro from Barca d\u2019Alva, the Ribeira do Mosteiro, and the Penedo Dur\u00e3o viewpoint. If you prefer cycling, you can rent bikes at the hotel.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Birdwatching at Casa Cisterna<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also a wonderful place for birdwatchers. <a href=\"https:\/\/naturetravellab.com\/en\/portugal\/central-portugal\/faia-brava-coa-valley\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/naturetravellab.com\/portugal\/midden-portugal\/faia-brava-coa-valley\/\">Faia Brava<\/a> is a beautiful protected nature reserve located about 20 kilometers from the village. Many bird species, such as the griffon vulture, as well as beautiful plants and flowers, are preserved here. Since late 2024, there has been a vulture observation hut at Casa da Cisterna. Visiting this area and its impressive birds is a unique experience.   <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"background-color:#eeeee8\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faia Brava was Portugal\u2019s first privately managed nature reserve and is administered by the conservation organization ATN (Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Transum\u00e2ncia e Natureza). Goshawks and black storks also nest in the cliffs along the C\u00f4a River. This love of birds is reflected in the hotel itself: the rooms are named after birds and trees from the region, ranging from Pisco (robin) and Noitib\u00f3 (nightjar) to Britango, the Portuguese name for the vulture.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jeep Tours and the Picnic Basket<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prefer to go further afield?
