Valldal in Western Norway: Nature, hiking, biking, and the most beautiful spots <\/h1>\n\n

If I had to describe Valldal in one sentence, it would be: deep-blue fjords, peaks covered in eternal snow, a rushing river, and a village that smells like strawberries. The valley (between Trollstigen and Geiranger) isn\u2019t called \u201cthe adventure valley\u201d for nothing: here, you can step right out of the fjord into your kayak, from the shore onto a trail, and from the valley into the high mountains. And strawberries? They\u2019re grown in abundance there. <\/p>\n\n

Why Valldal? <\/h2>\n\n

The valley lies on the Norddalsfjord (part of the Storfjord) and serves as a gateway to Tafjord, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site \u201cWest Norwegian Fjords (Geirangerfjord Area).\u201d That means spectacular geology, waterfalls, and protected landscapes\u2014and above all, nature that feels like an open-air museum. <\/p>\n\n

Strawberry Capital<\/h2>\n\n

Along the Valld\u00f8la River, you\u2019ll find farms and stalls selling strawberries (season roughly from late June through July, depending on the weather). The valley has been growing berries and fruit for over a century. Try them fresh or as a dessert at local caf\u00e9s. <\/p>\n\n

The most beautiful hikes<\/h2>\n\n

It’s best to stop by and ask for advice on the best routes and the current conditions of the trails. <\/p>\n\n

1. Rugg\u00e5: Family-friendly lookout point (1.5\u20132.5 hours)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

A leisurely hike through meadows and woods to a massive rock offering a panoramic view of Valldal and the fjords. There\u2019s even a simple shelter near the rock. Start: Hauge. <\/p>\n\n

2. Mefjellet (1,104 m): a classic hike with spectacular fjord views (4\u20136 hours)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

Rugged, occasionally steep, but every meter of elevation gain is worth it: views of Norddalsfjord, Tafjord, and the surrounding villages. Perfect if you\u2019re looking for a \u201creal\u201d day in the mountains. <\/p>\n\n

3. Loop between Nysetra, Heggsetra, and Heggesetra (about 6 hours)<\/strong>. Optionally, including Klovseter and \u00c5sesetra. <\/p>\n\n

4.<\/strong> Seter Loop (each leg approx. 2\u20133 hours): Klovseter \u2013 Heggesetra \u2013 Nysetra \u2013 Nestest\u00f8len \u2013 \u00c5sesetra<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

Hike through old summer farms (seters) with traditional cottages (\u201csel\u201d). Pure Norway: open meadows, history, and the scent of wood. The hikes between the various locations take about 2\u20133 hours. <\/p>\n\n

One of those farms is Meretes Garden<\/a><\/strong>. Today, it\u2019s a delightful place to stay with 6 glamping tents and 1 double room. <\/p>\n\n

4. Muldalsfossen: a waterfall with a “wow” factor (about 2 hours round trip)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

Near Tafjord, you\u2019ll climb up 13 hairpin turns to a viewing platform overlooking one of Norway\u2019s tallest single-drop waterfalls (free fall ~200 m; due to hydropower regulation, the flow is reduced, but it\u2019s still impressive). <\/p>\n\n

Leave no trace:<\/strong> close gates, leave herders and animals undisturbed, stay on the trails, and take your trash with you. <\/p>\n\n
