San Vito Lo Capo, on the west coast of Sicily, is a magical place. The town has a bit of an Arabic feel to it. It’s a destination you don’t just visit for the sun and the beach, but above all to immerse yourself in the landscape: whether hiking, biking, or simply marveling at the scenery.

Monte Monaco: Hiking with a View of Infinity

One of the most impressive hikes literally begins on the beach: the ascent of Monte Monaco, the imposing mountain that overlooks San Vito Lo Capo. The trails aren’t technically difficult, but they do require some perseverance. At the top, the reward awaits: a breathtaking panorama that stretches all the way to the mysterious Mount Erice, floating in the distance like a mirage.

For those who prefer to truly seek out silence, the Zingaro Nature Reserve* is just a stone’s throw away. Here, nature is still unspoiled: no roads, no restaurants, no Wi-Fi. Just the rhythm of your footsteps, the call of a hawk, and small coves that unexpectedly appear along the hiking trail. Be sure to bring plenty of water—and your swim gear—because the temptation to take a dip in the emerald-green water is strong.

*Note: Be sure to check the opening hours. Some caves contain prehistoric rock art and traces of ancient civilizations, while others extend deep underground and invite you to explore them as a caver.

Are you curious about the underground world? If so, a local guide or speleologist can take you on a tour that combines nature, history, and adventure.

Cycling between bays and mountains

You can also explore this region in a unique way by bike. Hotel Auralba, an eco-hotel in San Vito Lo Capo, provides free city bikes. Fine white sand, gently sloping shores, and calm waters make it ideal for a relaxing day. But what really makes this area special are the lesser-known little beaches you’ll find if you look just a little further: small coves nestled among the rocks, deserted in the off-season, perfect for unwinding completely.

Tucked away between San Vito, Zingaro, and Macari are hidden spots where you’ll feel like you’re alone in the world. No rows of lounge chairs or beach bars, just silence, sun, and sea—and the occasional curious seagull.

Culture and history intertwined with nature

San Vito Lo Capo is strategically located between the airports of Trapani and Palermo and is more than just a beach resort. It is a fishing village with a rich history and a unique blend of Arab and Sicilian influences, evident in its architecture and cuisine.

The area is teeming with archaeological sites, historic villages, and nature parks. Combine a hike with a visit to the temple at Segesta, sample local wines at an organic vineyard, or enjoy fresh couscous, a legacy from the Arab era.

Tips for Your Sustainable Trip to San Vito Lo Capo

Explore nature reserves such as Zingaro and Monte Cofano on foot or by bike.

Avoid plastic: bring reusable bottles and bags.

Travel outside of peak season to enjoy some peace and quiet and make a positive impact on the region.

Accommodation Tip: San Vito Lo Capo

Ecohotel Auralba is located just outside the city center and 500 meters from the sea.
