About the Aig\u00fcestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park<\/h2>\n\n

Nestled in the rugged foothills of the Pyrenees lies one of Spain\u2019s best-preserved nature reserves: Parc Nacional d\u2019Aig\u00fcestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici. Here, jagged granite peaks, blue glacial lakes, and pine forests dominate the landscape. With over 200 lakes and countless waterfalls, the park offers a rare interplay of water and rock. <\/p>\n\n

The name Aig\u00fcestortes\u2014\u201cwinding waters\u201d\u2014is not a poetic exaggeration, but an accurate description of the small valleys and mountain streams that wind their way through the park. The terrain is rugged, but accessible to anyone willing to climb and let themselves be guided by silence and steep trails. <\/p>\n\n

If you\u2019re lucky, you might catch a glimpse at dusk of the brown bear, which has recently returned here after years of absence. The capercaillie and golden eagle are also permanent residents of this remote ecosystem. Yet it\u2019s not just the wildlife that makes this place special. The lakes\u2014from the iconic Estany de Sant Maurici to the high-altitude Estany Llong\u2014reflect more than just the clouds: they bear traces of the Ice Age, geological layers that become visible if you look closely. There are also guides in the region who can tell you all about it. <\/p>\n\n

Back in the \u201990s, as a student, I happened to end up in this park. No map, no experience with mountain hiking\u2014just a poorly adjusted backpack and a vague sense of adventure. What I found there surpassed anything I had ever known: a wild, unspoiled mountain range where winding streams squeezed their way between pine trees and granite, and the lakes lay like mirrors, as if time had stood still. <\/p>\n\n

I remember taking a photo of the snow-capped peaks of Els Encantats near Estany de Sant Maurici. I felt as if I had stumbled upon a secret landscape. <\/p>\n\n

Now I was back. This time, it was a conscious decision; I was better prepared and had years of hiking experience under my belt. But my memory hadn\u2019t romanticized it\u2014it was just as overwhelmingly beautiful as ever. The park feels like a cross between the ruggedness of the Alps and the steep, rugged slopes of the Dolomites\u2014but without the crowds. <\/p>\n\n

Three Circular Hikes from Espot to Refugi d\u2019Amitges and the Surrounding Area<\/h2>\n\n

Below are three hiking options ranging from easy to difficult. All three start from the official Prat de Pierr\u00f3 parking lot, 4 km from Espot. During peak season, you can take a four-wheel-drive Jeep taxi from Espot to be dropped off directly at Lake Estany de Sant Maurici. This shortens the hikes by over an hour and reduces the elevation gain by 150 m. More info: www.taxisespot.com<\/a> <\/p>\n\n

1. Cascada & Mirador<\/em><\/strong><\/strong>:easy to moderate hike <\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n

This semi-circular hike starts at Estany de Sant Maurici and partly follows the Carros de Foc trail. It\u2019s ideal for a half-day hike, offering beautiful views and natural highlights without too much climbing. <\/p>\n\n

Directions<\/strong> toPark at Prat de Pierr\u00f3 and hike up to Estany de Sant Maurici (approx. 60\u201375 min). From there, hike to the Cascada de Ratera and a little further up to the Mirador de l\u2019Estany. Return to the lake via the same route or a short loop, and then back to Prat de Pierr\u00f3. <\/p>\n\n
