Himmerland is characterized by its vast landscapes of rolling hills, where you can hike or bike for hours without encountering a soul. In this green region, with its tranquil fjords, dense forests, and farmland, you’ll find not only natural beauty but also a rich cultural history: traces of the Vikings can be discovered everywhere.

In September, I took the train from the Netherlands to Himmerland and explored this unique region by bike and on foot.

Where is Himmerland located?

Himmerland is part of the Danish peninsula of Jutland. Although it is sometimes referred to as North Jutland, Himmerland has its own name and character. Situated between the Limfjord in the north and the Mariagerfjord in the south, the water is never far away here. Both fjords flow into the Kattegat, the strait between Jutland and Sweden. No matter which direction you head in Himmerland, you’ll almost always end up at one of the typical, narrow Danish beaches. The area was already inhabited during the Bronze Age, and you can still see the remains of settlements and burial mounds from that period. Himmerland also played an important role during the Viking Age, as evidenced by the ring forts at Fyrkat and Aggersborg. It is believed that these forts were part of the defensive line of King Harald Bluetooth (after whom Bluetooth is named), who is known for his efforts to unify Denmark in the tenth century. The ring forts are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

8 Times Himmerland

1. At the center, you can also get tips on the best places to drive to that day for wildlife viewing.

After a drive through Lille Vildmose, I spent the night at Vitskøl Kloster. From Utrecht, I had to change trains in Duisburg, Hamburg, Kolding, and Aarhus. From the quaint college town of Aarhus, you can reach Hobro by train in under an hour.

The scheduled travel time was 11 hours, but due to delays and the resulting missed connections, it took me about 16 hours. Another downside of the delays was that I lost my seat reservation because of the missed connection. Fortunately, the trains weren’t very crowded.

Traveling by train is not only environmentally friendly, but also comfortable. The seats in both first and second class on the Danish train are spacious and very comfortable. What’s more, Danes are very polite, which makes for a more peaceful atmosphere in the compartment than you’re used to in the Netherlands. With a cup of tea from the dining car, I was able to fully enjoy the view.

During the Danish leg of the train journey, I was struck by the vast green plains and the typical Danish red-painted farmhouses. They immediately gave me a taste of what was to come on the rest of the trip.

Here you’ll find all of our train trips.

The Best Time for Himmerland

The best time to visit Himmerland is from May through mid-September. It can get a bit busier during the summer months. The weather can be unpredictable, just like here in the Netherlands. I had some beautiful, sunny days in early September, but they were interspersed with showers. Click here for the most reliable weather forecasts in Denmark.

Himmerland Route on the Map

Himmerland: Experience the ultimate in peace and space in an undiscovered region of Denmark The region with the fairy-tale name Himmerland is located in northeastern Denmark and is an ideal destination if you’re looking for peace, space, and nature.
