For me, this isn\u2019t an island to rush through, but rather a place to take a breather: culture, the sea, short walks, and the nightlife on the streets. It\u2019s the island where everything comes together. <\/p>\n\n Lipari is the largest and most populous island in the Aeolian Islands. You can tell right away: <\/p>\n\n At the same time, it\u2019s easy to navigate. Just outside the city, you\u2019ll find yourself among rocks, ancient trails, and quiet coves in no time. Here you’ll find: <\/p>\n\n The walk up alone is worth the effort. From the top, you can look out over the sea, the boats, and the other islands in the distance. This is what makes the island so distinctive: here, culture and landscape blend seamlessly together. <\/p>\n\n TIP: Da Filippino Restaurant in Lipari, which has been serving Aeolian specialties since 1910 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n The island is less green than Salina, but it does offer some surprisingly beautiful hikes. It has stunning landscapes and many rugged beaches. Geologically speaking, the island\u2019s natural environment is the most interesting and complex. <\/p>\n\n It is especially famous for the white pumice and black obsidian spewed out by the volcanoes. I was given a stone as a gift that contains both types of rock; on one side it looks like black glass, while the other side is white and porous. The last eruption dates back to the7th<\/sup> century AD, completely burying the Roman ruins in the town of Diana and those of the Acropolis. <\/p>\n\n Old trails run along the coast and over the hills, connecting villages and farmland as they did in the past. These routes are: <\/p>\n\n In several places, you can see black obsidian rocks along the coast. From here, you can visit all the other islands, but of course you can also split your stay among several islands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The island is the \u201ccapital\u201d of the Aeolian Islands and has a population of about 10,000, most of whom live in the capital city of the same name. The residents make their living from tourism, agriculture, and fishing. The island remains very religious, and four times a year, the San Bartolomeo festival is held to celebrate the harvest, culminating in an impressive procession through the streets on August 24. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The town feels like a village where everyone knows each other. The town center is cozy, and you’ll find charming little shops there. In addition to the capital, there are other charming villages such as Piano Conte, Canneto, Quattropani, Acquacalda, and Porticello. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n Lipari doesn’t have any long, sandy beaches, but it does have:<\/p>\n\n Popular spots are mainly located outside the city and are easily accessible by boat or (e-)scooter. The great thing is that you can easily combine swimming here with a walk or a short exploration. <\/p>\n\n Of all the islands, Lipari has the best transportation connections. The trip takes about an hour. It\u2019s best to park any rental car you may have in Milazzo and not take it with you to the island.
