We took this route from west to east, but of course you can also go the other way.

Unspoiled nature: from rugged cliffs to picturesque hills and idyllic beaches.

Historic charm: visit centuries-old villages, Roman ruins, and Baroque cities.

Authentic Italian cuisine: sample local specialties such as burrata, truffles, and fresh seafood.

Flexibility: Discover Southern Italy at your own pace, from bustling cities to hidden gems.

Hidden gems: Here, especially in the interior, you can still find truly authentic villages

Campania & the Amalfi Coast: Iconic Coastlines and Hidden Treasures

Starting point: Naples

Start your adventure in vibrant Naples. Wander through the historic center, visit the impressive Mount Vesuvius, and enjoy the best pizza in the world.

Highlights along the Amalfi Coast

Campania, home to the famous Amalfi Coast and the majestic Mount Vesuvius, offers a diverse natural landscape. The impressive cliffs of the Amalfi Coast offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea, while the inland area is dominated by the fertile soil of the Vesuvian Plain.

You can enjoy wonderful hikes along the trails of the Lattari Mountains, in the Cilento National Park, or along the Amalfi Coast. Tip: Avoid the high season. It gets very crowded with tourists from all over the world, and that can detract from your experience.

Travel Tips for Campania

You can fly to Naples with airlines such as Transavia. From Naples and along the Amalfi Coast, public transportation is a great way to get around. The Circumvesuviana makes it easy to travel to and from Naples from all the towns along the coastal route.

Castellamare di Stabia has a beautiful historic center and many archaeological sites. These are not as well-known as Pompeii, but they are no less beautiful or important: many Roman villas have been discovered here. In addition, Castellamare di Stabia has an impressive castle that dominates the coast.

Sorrento has a picturesque town center, but it can get a bit crowded and is also very popular with Italians themselves. It’s best to visit outside of peak season.

Positano is a unique village clinging to the mountainside; it’s also crowded with tourists in the summer. The same goes for Amalfi, which is overrun with tourists in the summer. It’s well worth a visit outside of peak season.

Basilicata and Calabria: Hidden gems and Rugged Nature

Basilicata

Matera & the Sassi: Stroll through the historic cave dwellings and discover a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pollino National Park: Italy’s largest national park, featuring spectacular gorges, forests, and picturesque mountain villages.

Monte Vulture: an extinct volcano with scenic hiking and biking trails.

Maratea: Admire the imposing statue of Christ, the surrounding villages, and relax on beautiful beaches.

Pietrapertosa, along with Castelmezzano, is located in the Dolomiti Lucane in Basilicata. Personally, I think March and November are the best months because it’s wonderfully quiet. You’ll need to check whether hotels are open, though. Avoid the high season as much as possible. Southern Italy is very hot and is also a popular vacation destination for Italians themselves, which means it can get very crowded, especially in August. Plan for at least two weeks for a relaxing trip.

Transportation and Car Rental in Southern Italy

Flights: You can book flights to Naples, Bari, and Brindisi with Transavia and KLM, among others.

Transportation: Rent a car. You can choose to use public transportation for the first few days in Campania, and especially in Naples. After that, it’s best to rent a car.

The route above is described from west to east. Of course, you can also travel in the opposite direction. Check flight times and fares, as well as car rental rates, to determine the best route for you.

Sustainable Accommodations in Southern Italy

Choose eco-friendly accommodations to reduce your carbon footprint. By planning your trip for the early or late season, you’ll also be traveling more sustainably.

Southern Italy Tour on a Map

Southern Italy: The Ultimate Road Trip from Naples to Bari (Route & Tips) Discover the enchanting beauty of Southern Italy on a breathtaking road trip from Naples to Bari.
