Conquering the Alps in 8 days, from southern Germany to northern Italy\u2014a wonderful experience because I\u2019d never seen the Alps without snow before. I was struck by the stunning diversity of nature. A different landscape every day. Walking for hours without encountering a single person is wonderful.      <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, you can also do the stages of the Alpen\u00fcberquerung as day trips or separately. The routes are well marked throughout with a yellow sign featuring the \u201c\u00dc\u201d from \u201c\u00dcberquerung.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We took the organized 8-day tour. That includes luggage transport from hotel to hotel, comfortable accommodations with half-board, and the occasional transfer. It\u2019s wonderful not having to look for a restaurant after a day of hiking. <a href=\"#alpenuberquerung-georganiseerd\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#alpenuberquerung-georganiseerd\">Read more below about the organized tour<\/a>, including a shorter 5-day version.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our tips and best hiking routes through Austria, southern Germany, and South Tyrol in Italy.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 1: Hiking around Lake Tegernsee in southern Germany<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our tour started at Lake Tegernsee, south of Munich. The weather was terrible, so on the first day we only covered half the route. This was possible because the route was mostly a loop around the lake. A bus took us to the starting point of the route in Kreuth. In the pouring rain, we stood\u2014along with many others\u2014in our ponchos, ready to set off. Aside from us, there were no other Dutch people, though there was a group of elderly ladies who were doing remarkably well this week. The beautiful route took us through the woods and across streams, followed by some scrambling toward <a href=\"https:\/\/naturetravellab.com\/groene-reistips\/tips-voor-wenen-met-de-nachttrein\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"424\">Austria<\/a>. At the top of the mountain, we enjoyed some delicious homemade yogurt, and the rest of the route was a magnificent descent past streams, waterfalls, and enormous anthills. You do have to hold onto the railing along the cables here and there, but overall it\u2019s manageable. It\u2019s a beautiful sight\u2014these ski slopes as summer hillsides. The impact of the storm that recently swept through here is clearly visible. Once we reached the top, we were treated to a truly magnificent view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Here, for the first time, there was a brief disagreement about which route to take, but we eventually found the right path. The route was beautiful, ending with a crisscross trail through a forest right in the middle of the ski slopes. The final stop was in the ski village, with a hotel overlooking the slopes. In hindsight, we could have just followed the trail, but we accidentally took an extra thrilling detour that turned out to be more than worth it for the views. We were walking on trails high up on the mountain, and I often found myself wondering if this was really the right route. Fortunately, a group of experienced mountaineers confirmed that we were on the right track, so we obediently followed them.     <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hiking from Hochf\u00fcgen to Mayrhofen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overnight stay at Gasthof Perauer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distance: approx. 11 km, 900 meters of ascent, 400 meters of descent, approx. 4 hours and 45 minutes, highest point: 2,280 meters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty category <strong>*****<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 6: From the breathtaking Schlegeissee to Pfitsch in Italy<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A truly stunning, crystal-clear blue lake with a dam. Beautiful scenery surrounds the lake, which we soon had to leave behind as we headed toward Italy. A rocky path leads the way to <a href=\"https:\/\/naturetravellab.com\/en\/category\/south-tyrol\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"122\">South Tyrol<\/a> in Italy. On this route\u2014which is impassable for cyclists\u2014we nevertheless ran into a group of tough Italians who dared to tackle it. They had to cover most of this trail with their bikes in hand.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the national border, we enjoyed a delicious bowl of hot soup and pasta at the rifugio. From Munich, there are 24 trains a day to Gmund Tegernsee, a trip that takes just under an hour. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organized hike along this route: we booked through Feuer &amp; Eis. They arranged GPX routes, accommodations, luggage transport, and transportation back to Tegernsee for us. You hike on your own, but each day you start at the same time as a group of people on the same tour. Read more below.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u00dc<\/strong>: The entire route is clearly marked with the letter \u201c\u00dc\u201d (for \u201c\u00dcberquerung\u201d) on the yellow signs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The routes averaged about 17\u201320 km per day, and it took us about 5 to 6 hours each day to complete them. We walked at a brisk pace, but we did take the necessary breaks. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty level of the Alpen\u00fcberquerung: The German organization listed all routes as moderate to easy-moderate. We found it manageable, but there were some steep elevation changes here and there; good physical fitness and sturdy hiking boots are absolutely essential. Hiking poles are definitely a good idea.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We covered some of the &#8220;leg&#8221; by bus and once by train. Public transportation is apparently free for people crossing the Alps. We were able to ride every bus we got on for free.    <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hotel stays: We stayed in 3- and 4-star hotels on a half-board basis.
