Northern Germany

Northern Germany is closer than you think. And it remains stubbornly underrated. While half of the Netherlands heads south, this region offers a stretch of Baltic Sea coastline, endless Wadden Sea nature, the purple Lüneburg Heath, and the thousand lakes of the Mecklenburg Lake District.

It’s the perfect destination for slow travel. You can hike through national parks, cycle along the coast, and explore Hanseatic cities like Lübeck, Wismar, and Stralsund: brick-built gems with nature right around the corner. Many of these destinations are easily accessible by train, via Hamburg or Bremen.

On this page, you’ll find our favorite routes, destinations, and small-scale, sustainable accommodations in northern Germany. Ideal for off-season travel, when the coast and forests are at their quietest.

“Take a look at the world.
It’s even more amazing than
or any dream you could imagine.”
