NorGlamp: Sleeping in a fjord on Randøy: Glamping done right

Wake up in a queen-size bed with your first view looking straight out onto the Norwegian fjord. No hotel facade, no parking lot—just water, rocks, and the quiet morning air of Ryfylke. That’s NorGlamp on Randøy, a small island in the municipality of Hjelmeland, an hour’s drive from Stavanger.

NorGlamp isn’t just a campground with tents. It’s a carefully designed Glamping site featuring six completely different types of accommodations: from an Arctic Dome and a luxury barrel to a suspended cocoon tent and a Hobbit Hole. And new in 2026: the teepee.

Each unit has its own character, its own view, and its own atmosphere. What they all have in common is the tranquility of nature, without compromising on comfort. In 2025, Norglamp won the World Luxury Travel Award in the Glamping category.

Randøy: an island that most travelers pass by

Randøy covers an area of 16 km², has about 200 residents, and features a local store. The island is located in the heart of Ryfylke, the western fjord region of Rogaland, framed by the Lysefjord and the cliffs of Preikestolen. The bridge connecting Randøy to the mainland was opened in 1976 by King Olav V. Little has changed since then, and that is precisely what makes it so beautiful.

On the island, you’ll find farms, forests, several hiking trails, and peaceful swimming spots. You can buy fresh produce directly from the farmers. The highest peak, Randåsen (373 m), offers a sweeping panorama of the Ryfylke archipelago. It’s the kind of place you won’t find on any recommended route, so it’s almost never crowded.

The accommodations: six unique units, each a world of its own

What makes NorGlamp special is its diversity. You’re not just choosing a room—you’re choosing an experience. Every accommodation features a queen-size bed, linens, towels, coffee and tea, a refrigerator, cutlery, and a small terrace. Only the Cocoon does not have a refrigerator, tea, or coffee, as there is no electricity there. All accommodations were built by Norwegian specialists.

Important to know: the restrooms are located in a separate building on the premises.

Arctic Dome: Sleeping Under the Stars

The transparent dome is the hallmark of NorGlamp. During the day, the view of the fjord is breathtaking; at night, you literally sleep under the starry sky. The dome is built to withstand Norwegian winters. Heating, air conditioning, dimmable LED lighting, a Bluetooth speaker, and an electric charging point are all standard features. It can accommodate up to four people.

Luxury Barrel: a forest atmosphere with a fjord setting

The “Luxury Barrel” is a cylindrical wooden “barrel” with a view of the forest and a kitchenette. Breakfast or dinner can be delivered right to your door. The barrel is designed for the Norwegian climate.

Hobbit Hole: for those who really want to get away

Are you open to something completely different? The Hobbit Hole is a dwelling dug into the hillside, nestled right in the heart of Norway’s fjord landscape. Enjoy morning coffee in your little hobbit garden, with birdsong as your only soundtrack. It’s equipped similarly to the Barrel, including the option for meal delivery.

The Diamond: a story with a twist

The Diamond is a designer cabin featuring panoramic fjord views, air conditioning, and a small kitchenette. Fun fact: the cabin was originally built in Oppdal as part of the Norwegian TV show *Eventyrlig Oppussing* (Adventurous Renovation). After filming, the components were purchased by NorGlamp and rebuilt on Randøy.

The Cocoon: floating above the fjord

The most adventurous option: a hanging tent suspended from tree trunks above the fjord landscape. Waterproof, spacious enough for two, with LED lighting and a power bank. Not suitable if you prefer to have both feet firmly on the ground, but perfect for anyone who’s ever wanted to experience floating sleep in Norway.

Luxury Tipi: panoramic forest views

The Luxury Tipi features large panoramic windows overlooking the pine forest, a high vaulted ceiling, a private wooden deck, and space for up to three people. It’s ideal for a romantic getaway for two or a small family. Meal delivery is available.

Tip: Looking for a truly luxurious experience? Combine your stay with a visit to the sauna and jacuzzi overlooking the fjord. Be sure to book in advance.

Sauna & Jacuzzi: The Best of Norway with a View of the Fjord

NorGlamp rents out a barrel-shaped log sauna and an electric hot tub, both with unobstructed views of the fjord. Bookable in 1.5-hour increments. Includes an outdoor shower, towel rack, and LED lighting. After a day of hiking in Ryfylke, this is the most Norwegian way to end your day.

Dining on Randøy: local food delivered right to your door

NorGlamp doesn’t have a restaurant, but you won’t have to go without meals. Breakfast and dinner are delivered right to your Glamping door by Kniv & Gaffel AS. You can also buy fresh produce directly from the island’s farmers. For example, fresh meat from the local butcher for the grill.

Hiking and Activities in Ryfylke

The area around NorGlamp offers direct access to some of the most beautiful natural spots in Western Norway. Here are a few:

  • Randåsen (373 m): The summit of Randøy, 2–3 hours, moderate difficulty. Panoramic views of Ryfylke, Stavanger, and the surrounding archipelago. A 15-minute drive from NorGlamp.
  • Lauvåsen (502 m): An easy 1- to 1.5-hour hike from Fister, offering sweeping views of the greater Ryfylke region. Can be combined with a tour of the island.
  • Preikestolen: Norway’s most famous hike : 604 meters straight up above the Lysefjord, an hour’s drive from NorGlamp. Allow 4–5 hours. Moderate to difficult.
  • Eventyrskogen (Fairytale Forest): A 30-minute drive away : a loop trail through the spruce forest near Årdal, featuring dozens of wooden fairytale characters. Suitable for children and families.
  • Swimming on Randøy: The island has several quiet swimming spots and small islets. Ask your host about the secret spots.
  • Cycling: You can cycle around the entire island (no bike rentals available).

Small, local, and close to nature

NorGlamp is a small-scale glamping resort. It’s an intimate setting where you know the owner by name, can buy fresh apple juice from the island, and have meals prepared by a local chef delivered right to your door. The accommodations are designed to blend into the landscape rather than dominate it. Electric charging stations are available. The choice of materials for the various units—from Norwegian manufacturers such as Arctic Dome AS and B2B Pluss AS—reflects the connection to the region.
