Costa Verde, Portugal: A Hiking Trip Along the Green Coast of Northern Portugal

Escape the hustle and bustle for a week and discover the Costa Verde, the green coast of northern Portugal. A peaceful, self-guided 8-day hiking vacation. Hike at your own pace along expansive sandy beaches, charming fishing villages, historic towns, and dense pine forests. You’ll pass through the historic town of Viana do Castelo, ending your journey in the idyllic town of Caminha, near the Spanish border.

This is an independent—and fairly simple—hiking trip that you can arrange on your own or book through a local travel agency. In that case, luggage transport, lodging, and transfers are included. Day-by-Day Itinerary for a Hiking Vacation on the Costa Verde, Portugal

Day 1: Arrival in Porto

  • You will receive a route guide, an app, and luggage tags at your 4-star hotel.
  • You’ll stroll through the colorful Ribeira neighborhood and enjoy the sunset from the Dom Luís I Bridge over the Douro River.

Day 2: From Póvoa de Varzim to Apúlia (14 km, +87 m)

  • From your hotel, you’ll be transferred to the wide beaches of Póvoa de Varzim, a popular seaside resort among the Portuguese.
  • You walk along wooden boardwalks, between dunes and windmills.
  • Discover Apúlia, with its fishing boats and seaweed harvesters, and try some octopus.

Day 3: From Apúlia to Esposende (8 km, +33 m)

  • Take a walk through Fão, along and across the Cávado estuary, and you’ll arrive in historic Esposende. Your hotel is located near the historic center, with its small squares and churches.
  • Optionally, you can rent bikes, go stand-up paddleboarding, or kitesurf.

Day 4: From Esposende to Castelo de Neiva (13 km, +97 m)

  • Today, a varied landscape through villages, along pebble beaches, and across the Neiva River.
  • In the afternoon, you can enjoy your wonderful stay at a historic country house with a pool.

Day 5: From Castelo de Neiva to Viana do Castelo (14 km, +90 m)

  • You’ll walk back to the coast through a lovely pine forest on your way to Viana do Castelo. Enjoy the view from the Eiffel Bridge at today’s final destination: historic Viana do Castelo.
  • While in Viana do Castelo, visit the Santa Luzia Basilica, the Costume Museum, and the Gil Eannes ship.

Day 6: From Viana do Castelo to Vila Praia de Âncora (19 km, +146 m)

  • Today, you’ll start by walking through the historic center of Viana. Then you’ll follow the coastline and the stone windmills through forests and across a wide beach.
  • Today’s final stop is Vila Praia de Âncora. Here, you can enjoy delicious fresh fish.

Day 7: From Vila Praia de Âncora to Caminha (9 km, +59 m)

  • Walk along the Ecovia trail across Moledo Beach, through beautiful pine forests to the mouth of the Minho River.
  • There are plenty of opportunities to swim along the way. Eventually, you’ll arrive in the medieval town of Caminha. Visit the bell tower and the Gothic church, or relax by the 16th-century fountain.

  • Check-out and end of the trip. You can optionally book a transfer or continue your journey on your own.
