This 8-day self-guided hiking trip in Peneda-Gerês National Park takes you through impressive mountain landscapes, enchanting forests, and highland villages in northern Portugal.

Peneda-Gerês Hiking Tour: Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Ponte de Lima

Your trip begins in Ponte de Lima. It’s not a hiking day, but you’ll receive a wonderful welcome. After arriving at a charming 3-star hotel, you’ll receive a welcome package with the hiking app, maps, and a briefing. You’ll have the rest of the day to explore: the Roman bridge, the medieval town center, the gardens, and enjoy a glass of Vinho Verde at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Circular Hike in Castro Laboreiro

Distance: approx. 12.5 km

Elevation gain: +440 m / −440 m

Description:

  • Early private transfer to the remote mountain village of Castro Laboreiro.
  • Walk from the village past granite rock formations along a winding path through the hills.
  • You’ll descend into a wooded valley with an old bridge and a crystal-clear stream—perfect for a break or wading.
  • A steep climb back up to the plateau with panoramic views of the rugged mountains.
  • Return to the village.

Day 3: From Castro Laboreiro to Peneda

Distance: approx. 15.1 km

Elevation difference: +311 m / −574 m

Description:

  • Depart from the village and travel across rugged high plateaus dotted with granite formations.
  • Past traditional sheep pastures and into a wooded area.
  • A steep descent to a winding path leading to the Santuario de Peneda.
  • Walk along ancient granite pilgrimage trails.
  • Arrival at the shrine, idyllically situated: time for rest and a moment of tranquility.

Day 4: From Peneda to Lindoso

Distance: approx. 18.8 km (alternative: 11.3 km)

Elevation gain: +372 m / −596 m

Description:

  • You’ll make your way down through lush forests along historic pilgrimage trails.
  • Follow the Peneda River toward the gorge-like valley—once a smuggling route.
  • Take a walk through small villages and along dams.
  • Visit the imposing Lindoso Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking the river.
  • Overnight stay in a quaint country cottage with a local atmosphere.

Day 5: Serra Amarela Loop Hike

Distance: approx. 21.4 km (alternative: 15.5 km)

Elevation gain: +745 m / −745 m

Description:

  • Depart from Lindoso via mountain roads to the Serra Amarela.
  • View of meadows surrounded by forests and granite massifs.
  • Both the full route and the shorter version pass through villages and along old forest trails.
  • A steep climb, followed by a leisurely descent with views of Soajo and the valley.
  • Optional taxi ride back to your accommodation if you choose the shorter route.

Day 6: From Avelar to Soajo

Distance: approx. 18.8 km (alternative: 12.3 km)

Elevation gain: +576 m / −766 m

Description:

  • Transfer to the starting point in the village of Avelar.
  • An intense start through mountainous terrain toward the highest peaks.
  • Take a walk past the remnants of shepherding life: huts, wolf traps, and espigueiros (grain silos).
  • Hike down into the Ramiscal Valley to natural pools: the perfect place to cool off.
  • The final leg of the route takes you through the woods to Soajo, ending at a charming village restaurant or café.
  • Transfer to Viana do Castelo and overnight stay.

Day 7: Viana do Castelo & Porto

Distance: optional city walk (flat terrain).

Description:

  • Discover Viana’s historic center, the Basilica of Santa Luzia, filigree jewelry, and embroidery.
  • Optionally, take the train or bus to Porto to explore the UNESCO-listed shipyard, port cellars, and enjoy dinner.
  • A walk through the Ribeira neighborhood and across the Dom Luís Bridge.

Day 8: Departure

The walking tour ends after breakfast. If you’d like, you can stay in Porto or the surrounding area on your own.

Practical Tips for a Hiking Trip to Peneda-Gerês

Most of this hiking vacation takes place on unpaved trails and in rugged terrain. You’ll need good hiking boots with cushioning and support. There’s little shade along the way, so proper protection from the weather is also important. We recommend bringing hiking poles.
