Harz National Park: Seeing the Forest Through Different Eyes
“What a somber entrance,” I thought as I drove into the Harz National Park. The densely forested area gradually gives way to a sort of lunar landscape. The dismal sight of the many hectares of dead trees sends a shiver down my spine. Rows of desolate gray sticks that look as if they were placed there like matchsticks.
Climate change is the first thing that comes to mind. I realize that something completely different is going on here—and that it actually has a positive twist—as I walk into the national park with Anika, our guide and biologist.
What strikes us as we walk into the forest is how quiet it is. Not the tranquility you’d expect from a hike, but a kind of silence that belongs to a place where something has gone wrong. Rows of bare, gray spruce trees, without needles, without life, as far as the eye can see. My first reaction was disbelief: is this what a national park is supposed to look like? Anika, a biologist and guide at the Harz National Park, lets that question hang in the air for a moment before helping me see the same forest with new eyes.
A walk through Harz National Park with biologist Anika
We’re not walking for the kilometers now, but for the story. Anika has been working in the park for some time and knows every patch of forest we pass, including the history behind it. Her sense of wonder at every bit of greenery that’s blossoming anew here gives me hope. For directions, I refer you to the hiking article about the Harz.
This is about what you see along the way, and why things look the way they do now. If you look further ahead and walk more slowly, you’ll see marshes with (carnivorous) plants, streams, flowers, birds, and insects—as well as new plants and trees taking root on the dead trees beneath them.
How the spruce trees came to be here
The answer to my question doesn’t start with the bark beetle that is literally eating away at the trees, but with the years following the war. A lot of wood was needed, so there was extensive logging, and trees were replanted with what seemed to be the best choice at the time: spruce—fast-growing trees that yield usable wood in a short time. The result was a vast forest consisting mainly of a single species, all of the same age, growing close together. There was little biodiversity, little variation in age or species, and therefore little resilience.
The spruce itself exacerbates the problem. It is, as Anika puts it, a poor rooter: its roots grow horizontally, just below the surface, instead of deep into the ground. Under normal conditions, that’s not a problem. But during droughts—which the Harz region has experienced with increasing frequency in recent years—it certainly is. The trees simply can’t reach the water deeper in the soil and grow weaker.
The bark beetle finishes it off
A weakened spruce is an open invitation to the bark beetle. The beetle detects the tree’s illness through its scent and gets to work. It bores grooves into the bark and lays its eggs there. The larvae that hatch then eat their way through the bark, and that is what ultimately kills the tree. It’s not a dramatic attack from the outside, but a slow process that begins with a tree already weakened by drought.
Why the Dead Trees Are Left Standing in Harz National Park
“This,” Anika explains, “was the subject of the biggest debate about park policy for years: what do you do with a forest that looks so desolate? Cut it down and replant it, like after the war? Or something else?”
The current policy is clear: the dead trees will remain standing. Only trees that could pose a danger—for example, along trails—will be topped. No clear-cutting, no replanting with the same monoculture that caused the problem. At first glance, it looks like neglect. But with a biologist or guide like Anika by my side—who knows exactly where to look—that impression changes.
New life is emerging on and around the dead trunks: she points out young trees and plants that naturally belong here—species that would never have had a chance under a dense spruce monoculture. The forest is recovering, precisely on the barren remains of the dead spruce trees—though not in a way that looks hopeful at first glance. It is a process spanning decades, even generations.
Back after an absence: the lynx and the wolf
Perhaps the clearest sign that the park once again supports wildlife is the return of two large predators. The last lynx in the Harz was shot in 1818, after which the species disappeared from the area for decades. A reintroduction program has been underway since 2000, and it has proven successful: the animals have spread throughout the entire Harz region, are well established, and natural reproduction has been observed on multiple occasions. It began with 25 animals, released as the first project of its kind in Germany. Anika has spotted one on one occasion.
The wolf returned in a different way: not through reintroduction, but on its own from Poland, via the usual route that wolves have taken throughout Germany and the Netherlands in recent decades. Large predators such as the lynx and the now-returning wolf demonstrate that the Harz Mountains once again offer suitable, largely contiguous habitats for species with high ecological demands.
Two animals, two different stories, but the same conclusion: a forest that provides a habitat for lynx and wolves is a forest that functions well, even if things sometimes still look bleak along the way.
What this means for you as a hiker
I hope that when you walk through the Harz Mountains and see the bare spruce trees, you’ll look at them differently than I did at first. Not as a forest that’s falling apart, but as a forest that, after decades of human intervention, is getting the chance to rebuild itself.
That’s exactly what I believe in: nature that isn’t managed until it looks picture-perfect, but is instead given the space to develop on its own, including the messy, less photogenic phases.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Harz National Park
How far is the park from the Netherlands?
It’s about a 500-kilometer drive from Utrecht.
Why is there so much dead wood in the Harz National Park?
After the war, the forest was largely planted with fast-growing spruce trees, a monoculture that proved vulnerable to drought and the bark beetle. The park has now made a conscious decision to leave the dead trees standing, so that a more natural, diverse forest can develop.
Can you see the lynx in the Harz Mountains with your own eyes?
The lynx is shy and hard to spot in the wild. If you’d still like to see them, you can visit observation areas such as the one near Bad Harzburg, where lynxes live in a large, naturally fenced-in area.
Is the wolf a danger to hikers in Harz National Park?
Wolves actively avoid humans, and it is extremely rare to encounter one while out for a walk. If you do happen to come across one, be sure to keep your distance and follow standard safety guidelines, such as staying calm and not running away.
Can I take a guided tour of the Harz Mountains?
At the Harz National Park visitor center, you can find a wealth of information about the current state of the forest, its history, and its future. For a guided tour or excursion, it’s best to contact the Torfhaus visitor center directly.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!
After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!
A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.

Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.

Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
