Three national parks define the inland region: Pollino (Italy’s largest), Sila with its high-altitude lakes and pine forests, and Aspromonte. Nestled between them are the Serre, with tranquil forests and waterfalls such as the Cascate del Marmarico. On the Ionian coast lies the protected Baia di Soverato, where rare seahorses still swim—a good indicator of just how clean the water is here.
The best time for hiking is in the spring and fall, when the inland areas aren’t too hot. In the Sila, Aspromonte, and Pollino, you’ll find marked trails ranging from family-friendly walks to challenging mountain hikes, with abandoned villages along the way and views of two seas. Also short and worth the effort: the climb to abandoned sites like Soverato Vecchia or a hike to the waterfalls near Bivongi.
