Castiglione is a hamlet that officially belongs to Ravello but is located by the sea, right on the SS163 coastal road. Amalfi is about one kilometer away, and Ravello is about five kilometers away. Hotel Villa San Michele is located at the intersection of two SITA bus lines, which allow you to travel further along the coast without a car: to Atrani, Minori, Maiori, or in the other direction toward Positano and Praiano.

If you want to explore the Amalfi Coast without having to search for a parking spot all the time, that’s a real advantage. The famous coastal road is narrow, busy, and slow in the summer; you’ll often get there faster by bus or on foot.

A private villa with a history

Hotel Villa San Michele began as the private villa of an Italian shipowner, built in the 1950s by a Turkish architect who gave the property its distinctive Arabic details: you can still see them in the arches and other features around the building. For over twenty years, Nicola and Rosa Dipino have been running the hotel as a family business. No chain, no rotating staff: returning guests are greeted by name.

The hotel has twelve rooms, divided into five categories. Almost every room has its own balcony or terrace with a sea view; only one room has windows. The decor is Mediterranean and functional, rather than opulent. In some rooms, the bathrooms are compact, in keeping with the small-scale character of the building.

Swimming at the foot of the cliffs

The biggest difference compared to many other hotels along this coast: private access to the sea. The Amalfi Coast is at least as well known for its hiking trails as it is for its coastal road.
