Ramsvik Stugby & Camping: cottages on the Swedish coast

Looking for a place where you can wake up to the sound of the sea and enjoy views of rugged cliffs and lapping waves? Then Ramsvik Stugby & Camping on Sweden’s west coast is the perfect destination.

This campground has been run by the same family for over 60 years. It’s less than a 2-hour drive from Gothenburg.

This charming, small-scale campground is located right on the Skagerrak, an inlet of the North Sea, near the fishing village of Hunnebostrand. It’s a place to unwind while actively experiencing nature.

A peaceful place to stay—cottages by the sea

Ramsvik feels like a green oasis by the sea. You won’t find mass tourism here, but rather that cozy atmosphere that makes a campground so special.

Ramsvik has a variety of charming cottages—no fewer than 120 in total. They accommodate 2 to 7 people, and most come with their own kitchen, bathroom, and patio. About 30 cottages have been renovated over the past 3 years. Some feature simple, functional interiors. The smallest cottages are about the size of a tent. Guests staying in these cottages use the campground’s restroom facilities.

Best of all: they’re all within walking distance of the sea—most no more than 100 meters away. That means enjoying breakfast with a view of the water and falling asleep to the sound of the waves in the background.

Of course, you can also stay at Ramsvik with your own RV or trailer. They only have about 20 sites.

Catching crabs on a shallow sandy beach

The coast near Ramsvik is kid-friendly and full of things to do. From early in the morning until late at night, you can catch crabs with a net, a fishing rod, or a bucket. You can rent pedal boats, rowboats, kayaks, and canoes; there’s also a playground and a volleyball court.

Restaurants, Cafés, and Local Cuisine in Bohuslän

Of course, you can eat at the campground. Ramsvik has its own ice cream shop with fresh ice cream from Gothenburg and drinks made with local berries. On the restaurant’s terrace, you can try local dishes for lunch or dinner while enjoying the view of the sea.

The province of Bohuslän is home to the most delicious seafood. There are also several excellent local restaurants in the surrounding area, such as Skäret in Smögen and Tant Anton in Kungshamn. Klevs Gård is a farm shop where you can buy fresh local produce.

You can find the locally brewed beer Smögenbryggarn at various bars and restaurants. The brewery is committed to a sustainable marine environment and a vibrant coastal community. They use marine ingredients in their beer, such as seaweed, mussel shells, and sea salt.

Explore the archipelago by boat, kayak, or on foot

From Ramsvik, you can easily explore the impressive Swedish archipelago. Rent a sea kayak or motorboat and cruise past rugged rocky islands, hidden coves, and small fishing villages.

Prefer to stay on dry land? Then take a stroll along the famous Smögen Pier —a lively promenade lined with colorful wooden houses, boutiques, and seafood restaurants.

Another must-see in the area is Nordens Ark, a nature park where you can come face-to-face with endangered species such as the snow leopard, Amur tiger, and red panda. Also fun for young children: the petting zoo and hayloft.

Ramsvikslandet Nature Reserve and Nature Park

Near the campground, you’ll find the beautiful Ramsvikslandet Nature Park, which offers lovely hiking trails for all skill levels. You’ll hike along cliffs and have opportunities to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee along the way. It’s also a great spot for trail running.

Ramsvik and Sustainability

Ramsvik is located in a nature reserve that was formed 10,000 years ago by inland ice. The family does its best to preserve nature and minimize its impact on the environment.

In 2019, the solar system was completed: solar panels were installed on the roof of the restaurant, the roof of the reception area, and on most of the roofs throughout the park. 618 solar panels (1,199 square meters) spread across a total of 86 separate roof surfaces make Ramsvik Stugby & Camping energy self-sufficient year-round.

It is the largest solar panel installation in the Swedish hospitality industry, and it is unique in that it generates all of the facility’s annual energy needs.
