Lübeck & Travemünde: a green city break along the Baltic Sea
Sleeping in an old Kellogg’s grain silo, having breakfast without cornflakes the next morning, and a day later searching for kingfishers on a river that once ran right through the Iron Curtain. Our short trip to northern Germany was full of contrasts like that, and that’s exactly what made it interesting.
Destination: Lübeck, the former queen of the Hanseatic League, with its seaside resort of Travemünde on the Baltic Sea. We took our time, broke the trip into stages, and let ourselves be surprised along the way by nature, brick architecture, and North German hospitality. A city trip that’s as much about nature as it is about history.
Stopover in Bremen: sleeping in a Kellogg’s silo
To make the trip more relaxing, we split it into two legs. First stop: Bremen. We checked in at the John & Will Silo Hotel, a former rice and grain silo owned by cornflakes manufacturer Kellogg’s that has been converted into a strikingly sustainable hotel. The red Kellogg’s logo still adorns the roof.
The hotel is located on Überseeinsel, an old harbor district on the Weser River that is undergoing rapid development. It offers a striking contrast: circular silo rooms with views of the river, exposed raw concrete and steel beams, alongside a city park where the historic fortifications are still visible. No TVs, no minibar, but you can refill your water bottle for free at the bar, furniture made from recycled materials, and bike rentals if you want to explore the city. Reduce, reuse, recycle—but with style.
Editor’s Note With 116 rooms, the John & Will is larger than the intimate spots we usually highlight. Yet it fits the NTL philosophy: instead of new construction, an industrial monument was given a second life, with a sustainability concept implemented down to the last detail. A logical, intentional stopover if you’re traveling via Bremen toward the Baltic Sea.
Lübeck: Queen of the Hanseatic League
After breakfast—without cornflakes—we drove on to Lübeck. The historic city center is located on an island surrounded by the Trave River. Just east of the city center, a second river joins the scene: the Wakenitz. In the Middle Ages, Lübeck was the most powerful member of the Hanseatic League, the trading alliance that dominated the North Sea and the Baltic Sea for centuries. That wealth is reflected in the brick facades, the seven church towers, and the famous Holstentor. It is no coincidence that the old town has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987.
We started at the Tourist Information office on the edge of downtown. Great coffee, delicious pastries (the Schneckenhaus is a must-try), a nice outdoor seating area, and a few helpful tips: exactly what you want at the start of a city trip.
The Wakenitz: a boat trip on the Amazon of the North
For our first afternoon, we opted for a boat tour on the Wakenitz. Of the two rivers, this is the lesser-known one—and that’s exactly why it’s worth visiting. From the city center, we glided slowly into nature, away from the city, toward a green oasis. From the deck, we scanned the banks for kingfishers and, with a little luck, an otter.
It’s remarkable to realize that these waters were once the Iron Curtain. For decades, the Wakenitz River formed the border between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (the former GDR) and Schleswig-Holstein (West Germany). The watchtowers stood right on the water’s edge; nature was forced into a state of rest and was able to develop undisturbed. Since 1999, the area has been a protected nature reserve, featuring vast alder swamp forests, water lilies, and rare birds. It’s no wonder the river is nicknamed “the Amazon of the North.”
It’s just a 15-minute walk from the city center. Looking for something more active? Rent a canoe or kayak, or join us on a cruise aboard the Quandt family’s MS Wakenitz—perhaps with a stop at one of the cafés along the riverbank.
Courtyards and Passages: Lübeck’s Hidden Inner World
The next morning, we took a guided tour of the old town. We usually prefer to explore cities on our own, but a local guide adds that extra something: more stories, more history, and places you’d otherwise walk right past. In Lübeck, these were mainly the famous Höfe und Gänge: hidden alleys and courtyards that suddenly open up behind narrow passageways.
Lübeck still has about 90 of them, hidden behind unassuming gates. There used to be nearly 180. This network of inner courtyards shows how the city once functioned: a dense, compact trading city where everyone literally lived next door to each other in the backyard. It is precisely these places that give Lübeck so much character.
Eating and staying in Lübeck: local and with care
We wrapped up the first day at Unter Freunden, a vegetarian-vegan restaurant featuring modern cuisine, creative dishes, and excellent natural wines. The relaxed atmosphere was the perfect finishing touch.
What we liked: Unter Freunden works with local suppliers. They share a space with the coffee roastery Cycle Roasters, which serves as a café during the day and a taqueria in the evening. There’s also Burger & Wein, which we just didn’t get a chance to try. Next time.
We stayed at the LIHO Hotel Lindenhof, a welcoming family-run hotel where we immediately felt at home.
Travemünde: Germany’s oldest lighthouse, the beach, and rapeseed fields
After the city walk, we drove on to Travemünde, the seaside resort where Lübeck meets the Baltic Sea. We climbed the Alte Leuchtturm: built in 1539, it is Germany’s oldest lighthouse, constructed of brick by Dutch masons. It was in service for nearly 450 years, until 1972. From the tower, we looked out over the bay, where ferries sail back and forth continuously.
We spent the afternoon cycling. We rode through the old town of Travemünde, past fields of yellow rapeseed (Rapsfelder), through a marshy wooded area, and back to the villages and the beach. The final stretch followed a spectacular path right along the sea, past the beaches with the famous North German Strandkörbe—those wicker beach chairs you can practically disappear into. Our cycling route on Komoot.
Travemünde takes it one step further: there are even “Schlafstrandkörbe” on the beach, where you can spend the night under the stars, complete with breakfast on the beach and a midnight snack basket. We stuck to an evening outing: pizza at a local Italian restaurant. Satisfied, we wrapped up our two days in Lübeck and Travemünde; a surprisingly well-rounded mix of nature, history, good food, and warm hospitality.
By train or car: how to get there
We turned it into a road trip, with a planned stopover in Bremen. But Lübeck is also easily accessible by train: from the Netherlands, you travel via Hamburg, where you transfer to the regional train to Lübeck Hauptbahnhof (45 minutes). You can then reach Travemünde by train to the Travemünde Strand station. A pleasant, sustainable way to discover this corner of Germany, perfectly in the spirit of Slow travel.
Tip: Whether you’re visiting for the city, the Wakenitz River, or the Baltic Sea, book your accommodation directly with the owner whenever possible. It’s better for local businesses—and often for you, too.
Practical Information
Destination: Lübeck & Travemünde (Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany), with a stopover in Bremen
Duration: 2–3 days; ideal for combining into a longer road trip
Best time to visit: late spring to early fall; rapeseed fields bloom around May; beach chairs are available from May 1 to September 15
Accessibility: by train via Hamburg to Lübeck Central Station (and on to Travemünde Strand); by car, just over 5 hours from central Netherlands; ideal to break up the trip with an overnight stay in Bremen
Good to know: “Moin” (or “Moin moin”) is the classic Northern German greeting. It’s used all day long, from morning to night
Marzipan: Lübeck and marzipan are inextricably linked. Niederegger is the classic brand (over two centuries old); Mest is a newer producer that was recommended to us. We aren’t marzipan fans ourselves, but for enthusiasts, this is the place to start.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
