Hiking in Langsua National Park: An Eight-Day Hut-to-Hut Trek Through Norway’s Best-Kept Secret
Less than an hour’s drive from Jotunheimen, Norway’s most famous mountain region, lies a national park that most travelers completely overlook. Langsua National Park is larger than you might think, gentler than its neighbor, and quieter than almost any other hiking area in Norway. No crowds, no clattering hiking boots on tourist trails. Here, sheep, goats, and cows roam the country’s largest grassland, while you hike from cabin to cabin with views of Jotunheimen, Dovre, and Rondane on the horizon.
This 8-day self-guided hike through Langsua National Park takes you through a surprisingly varied landscape: forests, muddy peatlands, open ridges, and historic summer farms. Daily distances range from 10 to 16 km, with no extreme climbs, and you’ll spend most nights sleeping in self-catering cabins where you cook your own meals using the supplies provided. Just as the Norwegians have done for generations.
You can book the trip directly through our local, experienced specialist. They’ll take care of the train travel, the bus, the accommodations, and the supplies. All you have to do is walk. Go directly to prices and request a quote.
Langsua: the national park that nobody knows about
Langsua was officially designated a national park in 2011. It is one of the newer national parks in Norway, but its landscape feels as though it has remained unchanged for centuries. The park covers over 537 km² in the heart of Norway’s Innlandet region, between Gudbrandsdalen and Valdres. The terrain is gentler and more accessible than in Jotunheimen, but no less impressive. The highest point on this route is at 1,400 meters; the trails alternate between forest and open plateau, peat bogs and birch groves.
What truly sets Langsua National Park apart is its combination of untamed nature and living culture. The park is home to Norway’s largest mountain grazing area: flocks of sheep, goat farms, and cows are part of the everyday landscape. Along the route, you’ll pass historic summer farms. Some feature buildings over 300 years old that are still in use today. That’s what makes hiking in Langsua unique: it feels less like wilderness and more like a living landscape.
And then there are the views. On clear days, you can see the silhouettes of Jotunheimen and Dovre in the distance from Langsua. The mountain you haven’t climbed remains on the horizon—there’s something special about that.
Day by day: the route through Langsua National Park
The trip lasts eight days, seven of which are active days. You’ll start and end in Liomseter, the only full-service lodge on the route, and in between, you’ll hike a loop through the heart of the park. Daily distances range from 8 to 16 kilometers.
Day 1: Arrival in Liomseter
Take the train from Oslo to Lillehammer, then the bus to Liomseter. Arrive at the DNT lodge, which will serve as our base for the first and last nights of the trip. Pick up your welcome kit, get acquainted with the park, and have dinner at the lodge. A peaceful start to what lies ahead.
Day 2: Exploring the area around Liomseter: Nordre Suluhøgda
8 km / 3–4 hours
The first day of hiking is intentionally kept short: an 8-kilometer warm-up hike to the summit of Nordre Suluhøgda. The route offers varied views of Vågskardfjellet, Djuptjernkampen, and the Revsjøene. A mix of forest trails and open plateaus. Ideal for getting a feel for the Norwegian hiking rhythm before you’re on your own for the next few days.
Day 3: From Liomseter to Haldorbu
15 km / 6–7 hours
Today you’ll leave Liomseter and the real hike begins. The trail winds through peaceful forests and open meadows with views of the surrounding valleys. The destination is Haldorbu: a DNT cabin with a rich history, once a shepherd’s hut, renovated in 1993 and expanded in 2023 with a brand-new modern main cabin. The old cabin is still reserved for the shepherds themselves every fall. In the evening, you’ll cook your own meal using the supplies provided in the cabin.
Day 4: From Haldorbu to Skriurusten
11 km / 4–5 hours
The shortest day of the hike, but by no means the least impressive. The trail climbs to 1,400 meters, the highest mountain pass in Langsua. If you’re up for more, you can continue on the unmarked trail to the summit of Søre Langsua (+150 m). Then a gentle descent through birch forest to Skriurusten, a simple cabin on the edge of the forest with sweeping views of the valley. A place to catch your breath.
Day 5: From Skriurusten to Storhøliseter
13 km / 4–5 hours
Today you’ll hike just above the tree line, heading northeast. The terrain is undulating and open; on a clear day, you can see the green valleys, large mountain lakes, and, in the distance, the peaks of Jotunheimen and Dovre. Your destination is Storhøliseter: a traditional summer farm in a picturesque valley, featuring a DNT cabin and a building over 300 years old. Spending the night in a place with such a rich history adds a special touch to the evening.
Day 6: From Storhøliseter to Storkvolvbua
13 km / 5–6 hours
Today you head south and follow the trail over smaller mountain passes. There’s a bit more elevation gain than in previous days (500 meters in total), but it’s manageable. Storkvolvbua is a small, secluded DNT cabin by a mountain stream. The big plus: nearby is a natural swimming spot in the stream, known as a “badekulp.” After a day of hiking, that’s a wonderfully rewarding feeling.
Day 7: From Storkvolvbua to Liomseter
16 km / 6–7 hours
The longest day takes you back to the starting point. The hike begins with a gentle climb into the open mountain landscape, followed by a descent into the forested valleys around Liomseter. The circle is complete. After a week of self-catering huts, this is truly welcome: a hot shower, a served dinner, and a real bed with linens.
Day 8: Departure for Oslo
After breakfast, the bus departs from Liomseter for Lillehammer, where you’ll board the train to Oslo. A packed lunch will be provided for the trip.
Staying overnight in Langsua National Park: self-catering cabins as an experience
You’ll spend four of the seven nights in self-catering cabins run by the DNT (the Norwegian Tourist Association). That means: cooking your own meals with the supplies provided in the cabin, using dry outdoor toilets, and no running water inside the cabin itself. It sounds spartan; the reality is quite different. The cabins are well-stocked, the app provides recipes and instructions, and the atmosphere (just you, the silence, and a small gas stove) is hard to beat.
Liomseter is the exception: the DNT lodge that serves as the starting and ending point is fully serviced, with a restaurant, shared bathrooms, and bedding included. A sleeping bag liner is required for the huts along the route. You can reserve one in advance and pick it up at Liomseter.
You can safely leave any excess luggage at Liomseter. The DNT huts are accessible only on foot, so daily luggage transport is not possible. You’ll only be carrying your daypack along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hiking in Langsua National Park
What makes Langsua National Park different from Rondane or Jotunheimen?
Langsua is quieter, gentler, and far less well-known. While Rondane and Jotunheimen draw visitors with their mountaineering challenges and dramatic peaks, Langsua offers an open, expansive hiking experience without extreme elevation changes. The biggest difference is the atmosphere: here you walk alongside flocks of sheep, past active summer farms, and through a landscape that isn’t geared toward tourism.
Is this tour suitable for families with children?
Yes, this is one of the few multi-day hiking trips in Norway that is also suitable for active families. The daily distances are manageable (8–16 km), the terrain has no dangerous sections, and the route is designed as a loop. You never have to go far before reaching the next cabin. The minimum age is 12. Children must be able to handle several consecutive days of hiking.
How does cooking work in the self-service cabins?
Every DNT self-service cabin has a pantry stocked with basic ingredients. The app provides recipes and instructions tailored to what’s available in the cabins. You’ll cook on a gas stove in the cabin. It feels spartan, but it’s also exactly what the Norwegians mean by “hiking the Norwegian way.” Most hikers find it (after some hesitation) to be one of the highlights of the trip.
Are the trails in Langsua National Park marked?
Most trails are well marked, but on some sections in Langsua, the markings may be limited. Our specialist recommends having a basic knowledge of map reading. Through the app, you always have access to GPX files and detailed route descriptions, which cover most of the ground.
What if I want to start a day earlier or later?
You can depart on Thursday or Sunday (June 25 – August 30, 2026). The local agent will help you plan your train and bus connections and can also arrange an extra night in Oslo or Lillehammer upon request, so you can arrive at your own pace.
When is the best time to go?
The season runs from late June to late August. July offers the longest days and the most stable weather conditions. The beginning and end of the season are quieter on the trails, but the weather can be more unpredictable. In Langsua, it can also be cool in the summer, especially above the tree line. Always bring waterproof clothing and warm layers.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
