Crossing the Alps: From Southern Germany Through Austria to Italy
Crossing the Alps: Last summer, I finally had to make it happen. Conquering the Alps in 8 days, from southern Germany to northern Italy—a wonderful experience because I’d never seen the Alps without snow before. I was struck by the stunning diversity of nature. A different landscape every day. Walking for hours without encountering a single person is wonderful.
Of course, you can also do the stages of the Alpenüberquerung as day trips or separately. The routes are well marked throughout with a yellow sign featuring the “Ü” from “Überquerung.”
We took the organized 8-day tour. That includes luggage transport from hotel to hotel, comfortable accommodations with half-board, and the occasional transfer. It’s wonderful not having to look for a restaurant after a day of hiking. Read more below about the organized tour, including a shorter 5-day version.
Our tips and best hiking routes through Austria, southern Germany, and South Tyrol in Italy.
Day 1: Hiking around Lake Tegernsee in southern Germany
Our tour started at Lake Tegernsee, south of Munich. The weather was terrible, so on the first day we only covered half the route. This was possible because the route was mostly a loop around the lake. The lake is beautiful, and the walk along the eastern shore, in particular, takes you through a gorgeous forest with views of the lake.
Route from Gmund to Wildbad Kreuth around Lake Tegernsee; can be shortened in several places by taking a bus or crossing by boat
We stayed two nights at the Alpensonne Hotel on Lake Tegernsee
Distance: approx. 22 km, 250 meters of ascent, 180 meters of descent, approx. 5 hours, highest point: 820 meters
Difficulty category *****
Day 2 Hiking in Austria: From Wildbad Kreuth to Achenkirch: Crossing the border on foot
The real adventure was about to begin. A bus took us to the starting point of the route in Kreuth. In the pouring rain, we stood—along with many others—in our ponchos, ready to set off. Aside from us, there were no other Dutch people, though there was a group of elderly ladies who were doing remarkably well this week. The beautiful route took us through the woods and across streams, followed by some scrambling toward Austria. At the top of the mountain, we enjoyed some delicious homemade yogurt, and the rest of the route was a magnificent descent past streams, waterfalls, and enormous anthills. The sun even came out.
Hiking from Kreuth to Achenkirch
Overnight stay at Resort Achensee in Achenkirch
Distance: approx. 17 km, 850 meters of ascent, 800 meters of descent, approx. 5 hours and 45 minutes, highest point: 1,560 meters
Difficulty category *****
Day 3 in Austria: Hiking along Lake Achensee to Fügen
The route runs along the western shore of Lake Achensee to Fügen and is truly magnificent. You do have to hold onto the railing along the cables here and there, but overall it’s manageable. Halfway through, there’s a lovely spot to rest and enjoy some Apfelstrudel, and we reached the finish line feeling satisfied.
Hiking from Achenkirch along Lake Achensee to Fügen
Overnight stay at the KOSIS Sports Lifestyle Hotel
Distance: approx. 14 km, 200 meters of ascent, 200 meters of descent, approx. 4 hours, highest point: 1,000 meters
Difficulty category *****
Day 4: A beautiful route from Fügen to Hochfügen
Taking the cable car up in Fügen. It’s a beautiful sight—these ski slopes as summer hillsides. The impact of the storm that recently swept through here is clearly visible. Once we reached the top, we were treated to a truly magnificent view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Here, for the first time, there was a brief disagreement about which route to take, but we eventually found the right path. The route was beautiful, ending with a crisscross trail through a forest right in the middle of the ski slopes. The final stop was in the ski village, with a hotel overlooking the slopes. We enjoyed a lovely dip in the pool and a visit to the sauna.
Distance: approx. 15 km, 500 meters of ascent, 800 meters of descent, approx. 4 hours and 30 minutes, highest point: 2,040 meters
Difficulty category *****
Day 5: A Steep Climb from Hochfügen to Mayrhofen
A challenging day with lots of climbing, scrambling, and precipices. In hindsight, we could have just followed the trail, but we accidentally took an extra thrilling detour that turned out to be more than worth it for the views. We were walking on trails high up on the mountain, and I often found myself wondering if this was really the right route. Fortunately, a group of experienced mountaineers confirmed that we were on the right track, so we obediently followed them.
Hiking from Hochfügen to Mayrhofen
Overnight stay at Gasthof Perauer
Distance: approx. 11 km, 900 meters of ascent, 400 meters of descent, approx. 4 hours and 45 minutes, highest point: 2,280 meters
Difficulty category *****
Day 6: From the breathtaking Schlegeissee to Pfitsch in Italy
A truly stunning, crystal-clear blue lake with a dam. Beautiful scenery surrounds the lake, which we soon had to leave behind as we headed toward Italy. A rocky path leads the way to South Tyrol in Italy. On this route—which is impassable for cyclists—we nevertheless ran into a group of tough Italians who dared to tackle it. They had to cover most of this trail with their bikes in hand.
At the national border, we enjoyed a delicious bowl of hot soup and pasta at the rifugio. Near the end of our route, a couple of fellow hikers sent us in the wrong direction, which led us down a steep but beautiful trail that took us an extra hour to reach the hotel.
Hiking from Schlegeissee to the Pfitschtal in Italy
Overnight stay at the Kranebitt Hotel
Distance: approx. 13–17 km, 550 meters of ascent, 850 meters of descent, approx. 5 hours and 45 minutes, highest point: 2,275 meters
Difficulty category *****
Day 7: The Final Stage: Through South Tyrol to Sterzing (Vipiteno)
A leisurely hike today through charming mountain villages with farms, forests, and peaceful valleys—no strenuous climbing, just a relaxed stroll—and I proudly arrived at my final destination, Vipiteno—known as Sterzing in German—a very charming little town, by the way.
Hiking from Pfitschtal to Sterzing in Italy
Overnight stay at Hotel Lamm
Distance: approx. 16–20 km, 150 meters of ascent, 650 meters of descent, approx. 4.5 to 5 hours and 45 minutes, highest point: 1,460 meters
Difficulty category *****
We crossed three countries in 7 days, covering more than 7,000 meters of elevation gain. We did it!
Practical Tips for Hiking in the Alps
You can take the train from Amsterdam to Munich in 7 hours. From Munich, there are 24 trains a day to Gmund Tegernsee, a trip that takes just under an hour.
Organized hike along this route: we booked through Feuer & Eis. They arranged GPX routes, accommodations, luggage transport, and transportation back to Tegernsee for us. You hike on your own, but each day you start at the same time as a group of people on the same tour. Read more below.
Ü: The entire route is clearly marked with the letter “Ü” (for “Überquerung”) on the yellow signs.
The routes averaged about 17–20 km per day, and it took us about 5 to 6 hours each day to complete them. We walked at a brisk pace, but we did take the necessary breaks.
Difficulty level of the Alpenüberquerung: The German organization listed all routes as moderate to easy-moderate. We found it manageable, but there were some steep elevation changes here and there; good physical fitness and sturdy hiking boots are absolutely essential. Hiking poles are definitely a good idea.
We covered some of the “leg” by bus and once by train. Public transportation is apparently free for people crossing the Alps. We were able to ride every bus we got on for free.
Hotel stays: We stayed in 3- and 4-star hotels on a half-board basis. I definitely recommend this option because the food is delicious everywhere, and after a day of hiking, you don’t really feel like going out to find a restaurant.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
