Hiking in Albania: The Most Beautiful Areas and Hidden Gems
More and more often, I hear travelers talking about Albania—and rightly so. This country, with its rugged natural beauty, authentic villages, and hospitable people, is a wonderful destination for hiking enthusiasts. I traveled through Albania, 70% of which is mountainous, discovered some of the most beautiful mountain trails, and visited places that are still largely off the beaten path. In this article, I’ll share my experiences and tips for an unforgettable hiking trip through Albania and a visit to Tirana.
1. Krujë: City of the Hero Skanderbeg and the Holy Mountain
Just north of Tirana lies Krujë, the city of national hero Skanderbeg. Here, I visited the new, impressive Skanderbeg Museum, which is located within the walls of the old castle. Here you’ll find an almost mausoleum-like monument dedicated to this hero. I learned how this 15th-century warlord managed to resist the Ottomans and remains an important symbol of national pride to this day. The castle and museum are located at the end of the bazaar, with its colorful display of textiles, souvenirs, and antiques.
The Hidden Mosque of Sari Salltik
High above Kruja, hidden in the rugged mountains, lies the Sari Salltik Mosque, a special spiritual site that was once accessible only via a challenging climb. Now you can also get there by car or bus. This fascinating, mystical place of worship, located in a cave in the rock face, is dedicated to the Bektashi saint Sari Salltik, a mystical figure within Sufism.
I chose to hike (800 meters in elevation) to the mosque, and that was an experience in itself: a mountain trail winds past breathtaking views of the valley and the Adriatic Sea in the distance. Once at the top, you’re enveloped in a serene calm; inside the cave, candles burn in honor of the saint. This place is visited by both pilgrims and travelers and demonstrates how Islam, Christianity, and folk beliefs have coexisted in Albania for centuries.
I was lucky enough that the caretaker of this special place brewed me a fresh cup of coffee in the adjacent authentic cottage, richly decorated with images of the saint and featuring a beautiful, authentic interior. Be sure to bring plenty of water if you’re hiking up on foot, especially during the summer months. As of now (February), there were no restaurants or food stalls at the top of the mountain.
2. Tirana: a blend of history and modern energy
My trip began in Tirana, the vibrant capital of Albania. The city feels like a mix of old and new: drab communist buildings alongside colorful street art and trendy cafés. I strolled across Skanderbeg Square, visited the beautiful Et’hem Bey Mosque, and wandered through the Bunk’Art 2 museum, an old nuclear bunker that houses an impressive exhibition on the country’s communist past.
My experiences:
Enjoy a cup of strong Albanian coffee on a terrace in the trendy Blloku neighborhood.
Take a walk through Tirana’s Grand Park, where locals jog, have picnics, and play backgammon.
Climb the Pyramid of Tirana for a unique view of the city.
Tirana surprised me with its lively atmosphere and friendly people. It’s a city undergoing transformation, and that’s what makes it so fascinating.
Why visit Albania?
Albania’s mountains form the rugged heart of the country and cover about 70% of its territory. In the north rise the Albanian Alps (Bjeshkët e Nemuna), a remote mountain range known for its jagged limestone peaks. Here lie the valleys of Theth and Valbona, where centuries-old shepherds’ villages are tucked away between towering mountain walls.
Albania is a country caught between the past and the future. After 40 years as a closed communist dictatorship, it has now opened up to the world. As a candidate country for European Union membership, it is strongly committed to developing tourism. Construction and renovation are proceeding at a rapid pace. Many of the roads—which used to be quite adventurous—have recently been improved with the help of foreign aid.
Yet Albania is not some romanticized picture. Alongside unspoiled nature and ancient cities, you also see abandoned industrial zones, overgrown by time and decay, and new construction spreading hastily—and often without much regard for aesthetics—across the landscape. Trash litters the streets, and plastic piles up on the roadsides—signs of a system that has not yet fully adapted to the rapid changes. The Western economy has clearly made its mark, but poverty is just as visible.
Its rich history, breathtaking natural beauty, and friendly people make Albania a fascinating destination for travelers who venture off the beaten path.
Berat and Gjirokastër: Cities of Stone and Stories
From Tirana, I traveled to Berat (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the “city of a thousand windows,” which is known for its whitewashed Ottoman houses and the historic Ottoman Gorica Bridge over the Osum River.
The hilltop castle in Berat is a sort of fortified town where a handful of people still live and there are a few restaurants. From here, you have a magnificent view of the surrounding area, the Osum River, and the old Gorica Bridge. Inside the castle, I visited the Onufri Iconographic Museum, which is part of the Church of Saint Mary (Kisha e Shën Mërisë), and admired painted panels from the Byzantine period. The vivid colors and intricate details bear witness to a deeply rooted religious tradition that, despite the atheistic policies of the communist regime, never completely disappeared. There’s an audio tour you can listen to on your phone.
My journey continued to Gjirokastër (also a UNESCO site), which has an authentic and charming old town. I visited the impressive Citadel, which overlooks the city and houses a military museum.
I visited the beautiful Skenduli House (Shtëpia e Skëndulajve), a well-preserved 18th-century Ottoman mansion. The owner himself gave the tour. I highly recommend it for its traditional architecture, richly decorated rooms, and original features. Right next door is the Gjirokastër Ethnographic Museum, housed in the birthplace of former Prime Minister Hoxha. It offers a glimpse into traditional Albanian life, from hand-woven carpets to intricate wood carvings.
3. Hiking through the Osum Gorge, Albania’s Grand Canyon
An hour and a half’s drive from Berat lies the impressive Osum Gorge, which is 2–3 million years old and was formed by the continuous erosion of limestone rocks by the Osum River. It is a popular destination for nature lovers and adventurers.
A hike through the impressive Osum Gorge is the ultimate way to experience this natural wonder. During the dry months, from June through October, you can explore the gorge on foot and enjoy the rugged rock formations and hidden waterfalls. During the wetter months, from November through June, the river offers an exciting alternative: rafting and canoeing along the steep walls. Steep rock faces and hidden waterfalls make this a unique hiking area. In the summer months, you can also swim in the natural pools here.
Tips:
June through October is the best time for hiking; in the winter, rafting is a great option.
Wear sturdy hiking boots, as some trails are rocky and steep.
Stop at a local restaurant for a plate of Tave Kosi (lamb with yogurt), an Albanian specialty.

4. The Albanian Alps: An Unforgettable Hike from Valbona to Theth
One of the absolute highlights of hiking in Albania is the trek from Valbona to Theth in the Albanian Alps. This 17-kilometer hike in northern Albania is challenging, but the breathtaking views definitely make it worth the effort. Along the way, you’ll pass shepherds with their flocks and small mountain huts where you can sample homemade cheese and honey. In Theth, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time: stone houses, winding paths, and an atmosphere of pure tranquility.
Tips:
Start early in the morning to beat the heat.
Stay overnight at a traditional guesthouse in Theth and enjoy a hot meal with a local family.
Don’t miss the Blue Eye Spring, a magical place with crystal-clear water.
5. Mount Korab: At the Top of Albania
Albania’s highest mountain, Mount Korab (2,764 m), is a challenging climb to the summit, but the view across the border into North Macedonia is phenomenal. At the top, you’ll find complete silence—no tourists, no buildings, just the wind and the endless mountain landscape.
Practical information:
The hike takes about 7–9 hours (round trip), so be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks.
A guide isn’t strictly necessary, but it can be helpful if you’re not familiar with the route.
In the early morning, you can even spot wildlife such as golden eagles here.
6. Llogara National Park: From Mountain Peaks to the Sea
In the south, you’ll drive over the Llogara Pass, one of the country’s most spectacular mountain roads. Be sure to get out here for a walk. Caesar’s Trail leads you through fragrant pine forests to a lookout point where you can see both the mountains and the Ionian Sea. Llogara National Park is located at an altitude of about 1,000 meters between Vlora and Porto Palermo Castle.
Thanks to its unique microclimate and diverse flora and fauna, the park is a popular destination for hikers and those seeking peace and quiet. At the top of the pass, I had a cup of coffee and enjoyed the traditional Albanian dish of yogurt with walnuts and honey at the Panorama Restaurant Llogara.
My experiences:
Staying overnight at a lodge in the park is highly recommended; in the evening, you can often see deer and wild boars here.
Stop at Panorama Restaurant Llogara for lunch featuring traditional yogurt, walnuts, and honey.
The trail is suitable for beginners, but be sure to bring a windbreaker, as it can get chilly at higher elevations.
Butrint and Apollonia National Park: Ancient Civilizations on the Adriatic Coast
In the very south, close to the Greek border, Butrint is well worth a visit. Albania is a paradise for archaeology enthusiasts. At the Butrint Archaeological Museum (located in Butrint National Park), you can delve into the history of this city, which was once inhabited by the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines. The ruins, surrounded by marshes and forests, have a mystical atmosphere.
Equally impressive is Apollonia, an ancient Greek city that later became an important Roman settlement. The well-preserved ruins, including an amphitheater and a temple, bear witness to a time when Albania was a crossroads of cultures and trade routes.
The Flavors of Albania: Traditional Dishes and Eating Habits.
Albanian cuisine is a blend of Ottoman, Greek, and Italian influences. Everywhere I went, I was treated to fresh, local ingredients and simple yet flavorful dishes. The hospitality surrounding food is striking: in traditional restaurants, you’re invited to enjoy a leisurely meal, where eating isn’t just about the food, but a time to be together.
A typical meal often begins with byrek, a savory pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or meat.
Meat dishes such as tavë kosi, a fried lamb dish served with yogurt, are popular, as is whole grilled fish along the coast.
Albanians enjoy drinking strong raki, and in the cities, coffee is an important social ritual.
Hiking in Albania: A Mix of Contrasts
Albania is a developing country and, as such, full of contrasts: ancient cities alongside modern boulevards, unspoiled nature alongside growing tourist hotspots. A past of isolation alongside a future full of possibilities. If you go now, you’ll have the unique opportunity to experience a country in transition. Traces of the past are still visible, but the future is full of promise.
Practical Tips for Hiking in Albania
Direct flights from Amsterdam to Tirana can be booked through Transavia.
Unfortunately, there are no trains running in Albania, but there are plans to revive the old, decommissioned rail network.
An alternative route is to take the train to Bari, Italy, and then take the ferry from there to Durrës, Albania.
The distance by car from Utrecht to Tirana is 2,100 km.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
