Quick Overview of the Fife Coastal Path
Duration: 5 days / 4 nights (self-guided)
Route: Leven – Elie – Crail – St. Andrews (total approx. 55 km)
Difficulty: medium (3 out of 5)
Period: April through the end of October

Why This “Book direct” Walk Is So Enjoyable
You’ll walk past fishing villages and harbors where you can still feel the maritime history.
The coastline is constantly changing: cliff trails, forests, stretches of beach, and nature reserves.
Chance to see wildlife: seals, dolphins, and many species of birds (especially around the nature reserves).
And yes: Anstruther fish & chips at the harbor is practically a ritual walk here.
Many scenes from the famous Outlander series were filmed in this area.
Day-by-Day Itinerary for the Fife Coastal Path
Day 1: Arrival in Leven
You’ll start in Leven, a coastal town with a wide sandy beach and a boardwalk. It’s the perfect place to get into the swing of things: get some fresh air, enjoy a coffee by the sea, and turn in early. Leven is also easily accessible from Edinburgh. Overnight stay in Leven.
Day 2: From Leven to Elie (and back to Leven)
Distance: approx. 15.5 km
Elevation: +85 / -85
Today you’ll walk along Largo Bay and through Lower Largo, the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk (the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe). Then you’ll continue along more dramatic stretches of coastline toward Earlsferry and Shell Bay Beach. In Elie, a picturesque little harbor and the Elie Ness Lighthouse await you.
Practical detail: Since there are few places to stay in Elie, you’ll be spending the night in Leven again. A round-trip taxi ride is included (pickup at The Ship Inn in Elie). Overnight Stay: Life
Day 3: From Elie to Crail (fishing villages & marine life)
Distance: approx. 17 km
Elevation gain: +55 / -65
In the morning, you’ll be taken back to Elie to continue your walk. Along the way, you’ll pass through St. Monans and the bustling little harbor of Pittenweem. You’ll pass through Anstruther (a perfect place for lunch—fish and chips!) and, if your timing is right, you can even take a boat trip to the Isle of May Nature Reserve to spot puffins and seals, among other wildlife.
You’ll end up in Crail, a small harbor town where you’ll often find freshly caught lobster on the menu. Overnight stay: Crail
Day 4: From Crail to St. Andrews (cliff finale & golf legends)
Distance: approx. 22.5 km
Elevation gain: +126 / -115
This is the longest day and feels like a true final stage. You’ll walk to Fife Ness (the easternmost point of the peninsula) and then past a row of world-famous golf courses and the beach at Kingsbarns.
The approach along the cliffs at Kinkell Braes is spectacular: St. Andrews comes into view with its ruins, university town atmosphere, and, of course, the Old Course. Be sure to visit the cathedral ruins and the castle if you still have some energy left. Overnight stay: St. Andrews
Day 5: Departure from St. Andrews
The package ends after breakfast. You could, for example, combine it with a few days in Edinburgh.

About Fife
Fife is a Scottish region that often falls just off the beaten path, but immediately leaves a lasting impression. It lies between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Tay, with a coastline on the eastern side full of cliffs, small beaches, and little harbors where the fishing tradition is still evident. In the East Neuk, villages are strung together like beads on a necklace: colorful cottages, winding alleys, and the smoky aroma of a fish shack in the harbor.
Inland, the landscape becomes gentler: rolling farmland, patches of forest, and the Lomond Hills rising like green ridges in the distance. And then, of course, there’s St. Andrews: historic, lively, and steeped in golfing legend. Fife feels compact, varied, and perfect for Slow travel: a new view every day, without having to spend hours in the car.
Practical Information: How to Get There (Without a Car)
Toward Life
Train: ScotRail from Edinburgh (approx. 1 hr 20 min); the station in Leven is centrally located.
Bus: including Stagecoach (X60/X58) from Edinburgh via Inverkeithing/Kirkcaldy.
Back from St. Andrews
There are connections to Edinburgh and Glasgow from the St. Andrews bus station.
If you’re traveling by train, you’ll often go through Leuchars (a short taxi or bus ride from St. Andrews).
Outlander Tip
Attention Outlander fans: this coastal walk takes you through a region where a surprising number of Outlander scenes were filmed. You don’t have to make a huge detour to see them. With just one or two short side trips, you can visit the best locations.
1. Falkland is 1940s/1960s Inverness The village of Falkland (Fife) appears in *Outlander* as 20th-century Inverness. It’s a pleasant place to stroll around, taking in sights like the Bruce Fountain and the village square. Perfect as a stop on the way to Fife or as a mini-excursion from St. Andrews.
2. Culross: Cranesmuir & Claire’s Herb Garden Scenes from the fictional Cranesmuir were filmed in Culross (around the Mercat Cross), and the gardens at Culross Palace also appear as Claire’s herb garden. This is a wonderful “time capsule” stop if you have a free afternoon.
3. Dysart Harbor: Le Havre (Season 2) Dysart Harbor stood in for the French port of Le Havre. Bonus: This harbor is located along the Fife Coastal Path, so it really feels like an Outlander moment without the theme being forced upon you. It’s the perfect spot to visit on your arrival day in Leven (or if you’re in the area).
Bonus (easy to pick up on the route): The Reaper in Anstruther During your walking day via Anstruther, you can (if timing permits) stop by the harbour/Scottish Fisheries Museum. The Reaper is located there, the historic ship seen in the Dysart/Le Havre scenes (please note: access to the ship may be limited due to restoration).
Sustainable Tips for When You’re on the Go (Small Impact, Big Difference)
Bring a reusable water bottle and a lunchbox (a packed lunch without extra waste).
Use public transportation whenever possible: this trip is well-suited for it.
Stay on the trails near sensitive dunes and cliff edges, and take your trash with you when you leave.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
