Hiking the St. Olav Trail: Route, Stages, and Tips
A thousand years ago, Olav Haraldsson traveled this road northward in search of his crown. He met his death at Stiklestad and was canonized three years later. Since then, pilgrims have followed the same route: from the east coast of Sweden, over the mountains to Norway, all the way to his grave in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.
That route is now called the St. Olavsleden, the northernmost pilgrimage route in the world. In 2030, it will be 1,000 years since Olav was killed, and Norway is preparing for a national anniversary. That’s reason enough to take a closer look at the route, its history, and the practical aspects of this hiking adventure.
What is the St. Olav Trail?
The St. Olav Trail runs from Selånger, on Sweden’s east coast near Sundsvall, to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The route is approximately 564 kilometers long, divided into 29 stages averaging 20 kilometers each, and takes about 30 days of hiking in total if you walk the entire route consecutively.
The St. Olav Trail is part of a larger network of pilgrimage routes, the St. Olav Ways, which converge from several countries at the tomb of Olav Haraldsson. Since May 2010, this network has held the status of a European Cultural Route, granted by the Council of Europe.
Along the way, you’ll pass through forests, lakes, farmland, and mountainous terrain. The route generally has moderate elevation changes, which makes it suitable for cycling (at least part of the way), especially on the Swedish side. Many pilgrims don’t walk the entire route in one go, but break it up into stages that they complete over several years, or you can combine it with train travel.
Olav Haraldsson: From Viking King to Saint, and the 2030 Jubilee
Olav Haraldsson (995–1030) was king of Norway from about 1015 to 1028, until he was driven from the throne. In the summer of 1030, he returned from exile in Novgorod (in present-day Russia) to reclaim his throne. On July 29, 1030, he was killed at Stiklestad in the battle to regain his kingdom.
A year later, his body was exhumed and found to be intact. He was canonized and became a symbol of the Norwegian kingdom, a status that is still evident today in the Norwegian coat of arms, where the lion holds Olav’s axe. Starting in 1070, Nidaros Cathedral was built over his grave, and it became the most important pilgrimage destination in Northern Europe.
In 2030, it will be exactly one thousand years since Olav fell in battle at Stiklestad. Norway is therefore organizing the Nasjonaljubileet 2030, with the main focus in Trøndelag and Trondheim, where he died and is buried. The Catholic Church in Norway has also asked the pope to proclaim a jubilee year from 2030 to 2031, commemorating both his death (July 29, 2030) and the exhumation of his body a year later (August 3, 2031).
For hikers, this means increased attention to the route in the coming years, restoration work on Nidaros Cathedral, and various commemorative events in Trøndelag—a great time to plan your own pilgrimage before things get busier.
The St. Olav Trail: From the Swedish Mountains to the Trondheim Fjord
Through the Mountains: From Sweden to Norway
Starting from mountain villages such as Duved and Skalstugan, in the Åre region of Sweden, the route crosses the border into Norway. Here, you’ll walk along the wide Kong Karls Johans veg, once built as a royal route, cutting straight across the highlands between the two countries. It’s the most remote and rugged stretch of the entire hike, offering sweeping views and very few buildings.
The St. Olav Trail in Trøndelag: Forests, Rivers, and Viking Heritage
Once in Norway, the route winds through the forests and along the rivers of Trøndelag, heading toward Stiklestad. At the Stiklestad National Cultural Center, you’ll visit Stiklestad Church with the Olav Stones and the reconstructed Viking longhouses of Stiklastadir, built on the site where Olav fell in battle. Further along, you’ll pass the monastery ruins of Munkeby and the historic wooden houses of Levanger, with its arboretum and the 12th-century Alstadhaug Church.
Along the fjord to Trondheim
The final leg of the hike runs from Ranheim along the Trondheim Fjord, past the Ringve Museum and its arboretum, through historic Bakklandet, and across the old city bridge. The route ends at Nidaros Cathedral, where pilgrims traditionally receive their pilgrim certificates.
Practical Tips for Your Own St. Olavsleden Pilgrimage
Best time to visit: late May through September. In September, the weather can be either summer-like or autumnal, especially in the mountains. Check yr.no for the latest forecast before your trip.
Difficulty level: mostly moderate and easily navigable. The mountain section between Sweden and Norway does require a good level of fitness and appropriate clothing, as the weather can change quickly there.
Stages: The entire route consists of 29 stages averaging 20 kilometers each. The route passes through many villages and towns, so you can join or leave the route at virtually any point.
Accommodations: Along the way, you’ll find pilgrim hostels, farms, and simple guesthouses, often with shared bathrooms and their own distinctive atmosphere.
I walked part of the route between Sweden and Norway. Here you can read the story about my hike to Trondheim.
Packing list at a glance: layered clothing, preferably made of wool; a windproof and waterproof outer layer; sturdy (waterproof) hiking boots; a refillable water bottle; and hiking poles, if desired.
Frequently Asked Questions About the St. Olavsleden
How long does it take to walk the entire St. Olavsleden?
The entire route is approximately 564 kilometers long and is divided into 29 stages. Walking it all at once takes about 30 days, but many pilgrims walk the route in sections, spread out over several years.
Can you also walk part of the St. Olav Trail?
Yes. The route passes through many villages and towns, so you can get on or off at almost any point. That also makes it easy to combine with train travel or with an organized tour that focuses on a single stage.
Is the St. Olavsleden suitable for beginners?
For the most part, yes. The trails are wide and the elevation gain is moderate, with the exception of the mountain section between Sweden and Norway, which requires better physical conditioning and the right gear. The challenge lies in the weather, the distances, and the solitude: you won’t encounter as many hikers here as you would, for example, on the Camino de Santiago.
When is the best time of year to run the St. Olavsleden?
May through September. Keep in mind that the weather in the mountains can change quickly even in the summer, so be sure to check the Norwegian weather service, yr.no, before your trip.
How do you get to the starting point in Sweden?
Selånger is located near Sundsvall and is accessible by train from Stockholm. If you’d rather walk part of the route, you can also board the train in Östersund or Åre, both of which have their own train stations. Read my story and the St. Olavsleden route I hiked.
Where can you stay overnight along the St. Olav Trail?
Along the route, you’ll find several hostels, farms, small hotels, and B&Bs. It can be a bit of a challenge to find a place to stay here and there, so it’s advisable to make arrangements in advance. You can also set out with your own tent, but be sure to take the varying weather conditions into account.
Can you also have your luggage shipped?
If you’d rather not lug your luggage around between overnight stays, you can have it transported. There is a cost involved, though. It’s more economical to split the transportation costs with a group. This is organized by the accommodations themselves or by a taxi service.
Can you also bike the St. Olav Trail?
You can explore the St. Olavsleden by bike . A mountain bike is best suited for this. About half of the route is unpaved, and there are a few detours here and there. The bike route is well marked.
What changes are coming to St. Olavsleden as we approach 2030?
In the coming years, interest in the route will grow, with restoration work on Nidaros Cathedral and various commemorative events in Trøndelag surrounding the 2030 National Anniversary. It’s a good time to plan your own pilgrimage before it gets busier.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
