We all know by now that walking isn’t just fun—it’s also good for your health. A 15-minute walk every day does wonders for your body and mind. What’s less well known is that walking in nature is even better for you. A great deal of scientific research has been conducted on this topic, and the effect of nature on people and our behavior is astonishing. Read more about the effects of forest bathing and all the benefits of walking in nature.
Hiking in Nature Is Good for Your Health: Five Key Benefits
The five most important scientifically proven benefits of hiking in nature:
Stress and anxiety are reduced Research has shown that spending time in nature can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and improve your mood.
Cardiovascular health is on the rise Regular walks in nature can help lower your blood pressure and improve your overall heart health.
The immune system is strengthened Exposure to nature appears to increase the number of natural “killer cells” in your body, which helps fight infections and diseases.
Your creativity and focus are enhanced Spending time in nature can help improve attention and cognitive function, making it easier to concentrate and be more creative.
Improving Your Overall Well-Being Spending time in nature has been linked to a better self-image and improved overall well-being.
Hiking in Nature Is Good for Your Health
Spending time in nature helps you get more physical activity, which is important for maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of various chronic diseases. Modern approaches to health promotion are increasingly focused on prevention.
Nature as the Fourth Pillar of Health
Historically, there has always been a strong focus on nutrition, sleep, and physical activity as key factors in maintaining good health. It is now increasingly recognized that nature In addition to these three pillars, the fourth pillar of health should be taken into account. People who live near green spaces are naturally more physically active. Read on to learn about the positive impact nature has on your body.
Walking in nature can have a positive impact on your physical health. Regular physical activity is important in any case for maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Hiking in nature is a great way to get your daily dose of exercise while enjoying the beauty of the Outdoor life.
Hiking in Nature Is Good for Your Mental Health
Research has shown that walking in nature also reduces stress and anxiety, improves your mood, and promotes overall well-being.
Studies have shown that spending time in a green environment can lower cortisol, the stress hormone, and reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. Polish research has shown that stress levels decrease in young adults who took a 15-minute walk through a city park during the winter. Just ten minutes of brisk walking a day can make a difference, although you’ll reap the greatest benefits if you spend about two hours a week in nature.
Nature Makes You Happy
In addition to reducing stress, walking in nature can also improve your mood and overall well-being. Nature stimulates your senses and promotes a sense of happiness. Psychological research has also shown that people who spend more time in nature tend to report higher levels of life satisfaction.
Recharging in Nature
Scientists who study the effects of nature on our mental well-being are convinced that exposure to a natural environment allows us to “reset.” It can be a much-needed break from the many stimuli of daily life. Our brains are constantly searching for information and patterns, but in nature we experience something completely different: there are no computers or phones, no other people—just ourselves, the open air, and trees. This gives our minds a sense of calm and space, allowing us to catch our breath mentally.
Walking in Nature Is Good for Concentration
Research has also shown that walking in nature can improve your focus and concentration. It slows your heart rate and breathing and triggers the release of calming hormones such as endorphins. Anxiety and stress are reduced, and you can focus better and think more creatively. In addition, taking walks outdoors provides a change of scenery and a break from your daily routine. You get a cognitive break and your mind is refreshed, which improves your ability to take action and make better decisions.
Hiking in Nature Is Good for Your Health: Take a Forest Bath
Part of this boost in immune system function is attributed to “phytoncides.” Phytoncides are natural oils found in trees and plants that are part of their defense system. Trees known to produce particularly high levels of phytoncides include the evergreen cedar, spruce, conifers, and pines, as well as the oak. These natural oils are beneficial not only to trees but also to us humans. In addition to boosting the immune system by increasing the number of immune cells, inhaling these oils has been shown to:
has anti-inflammatory effects
helps you relax and reduces activity in the autonomic nervous system
reduces stress
sleep improves
lowers blood sugar levels
Shinrin-Yoku
In Japan, a forest bath is called “Shinrin-yoku,” which essentially means a short, relaxing visit to the forest. Japanese research has shown that walking in nature can even strengthen the immune system. Research into the effects of forest bathing showed that a monthly forest bathing trip resulted in an increase in “natural killer cells” (NK cells) in the bloodstream that lasted for more than 30 days.
In addition to the benefits for physical and mental health, walking in nature can, of course, also be a great way to connect with friends, family, or coworkers. Whether you go for a walk alone or with others, nature provides the perfect setting for meaningful conversations and quality time. Walking side by side without constant eye contact makes conversation flow more naturally and allows you to communicate more openly.

Nature Mindfulness
In his book *The Art and Science of Forest Bathing*, Dr. Qing Li, an international expert in the field of forest medicine, demonstrates the power of nature and the forest. We instinctively know that nature is good for us. In Japanese, there is a word for this: *yugen*—feeling at one with nature.
Biophilia is the idea that humans have an innate need to connect with nature. In 1984, American biologist Edward O. Wilson introduced the idea that humans have a natural tendency to seek a connection with nature and other life forms. It has also been shown that children who spend a lot of time playing in nature during their childhood tend to appreciate and respect nature more as adults.
Benefits of Barefoot Hiking in Nature
Many people believe that being barefoot in nature has its own benefits. Research shows that direct contact with the earth’s surface—literally “grounding”—can reduce inflammation, pain, and stress while simultaneously improving blood flow, energy levels, and sleep quality. Furthermore, it has been discovered that direct contact with the earth can be important for regulating daily biological rhythms that aid in the secretion of hormones, such as cortisol. Of course, it’s not for everyone. It also takes some practice.
A connection with nature promotes sustainable behavior
Research has also shown that time spent in nature and a stronger connection to nature can lead to an increase in environmentally friendly behavior. By consciously walking in nature, you are more likely to treat the environment in a more sustainable way, recycle, and participate in activities that are environmentally responsible, while reducing your participation in activities that are harmful to the environment.
Hiking Vacation in Nature & Wellness
In short: hiking in nature isn’t just fun—it’s also a simple and powerful way to improve your physical and mental health. From reducing stress and anxiety to strengthening the immune system, the benefits of spending time in nature are numerous and scientifically proven. What’s more, it can benefit our planet as well.
So, if you have a moment, go for a walk—a stroll in the park or just a mindful walk in a nearby forest. Experience the many benefits of nature for yourself. Discover how just one forest bath a month can improve your mood and health.
The studies above clearly show that walking in nature is good for you. Be sure to set aside some extra time for it on your vacation and go for a walk. The natural scenery in many destinations is surprisingly beautiful and diverse. Take a look, for example, at the stunning natural beauty of Tuscany.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.

Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
