From Braunschweig , I cycled (on a real old-fashioned bike) to Wolfenbüttel, a lovely ride of about 12 kilometers that ended with lunch at the Beach Club on the Oker. Along the way, I realized why this little town looks so different from its larger neighbor: Wolfenbüttel simply wasn’t important enough to be bombed.
While Braunschweig had to rebuild most of its city center, the original buildings still stand here. A city well worth visiting during your Harz vacation, especially in combination with Goslar—I explored it by bike with a guide.
Wolfenbüttel is situated on what was once marshland, and at its core is a planned Renaissance town, not an organically grown medieval center. This explains the straight lines and wider streets you find here, in contrast to the winding alleys of a typical medieval town. By water, you could eventually even reach the North Sea from Wolfenbüttel in flat-bottomed boats, and those same flat-bottomed boats also brought hard building stone from Braunschweig—a material that Wolfenbüttel itself did not have nearby.
TIP: If you’re biking from Braunschweig to Wolfenbüttel, you’ll pass a beautiful forest with the Lowe-pfad. A little further on, you’ll also pass the Gartner Museum, which focuses on the history of horticulture.
In 1432, the dukes moved their residence from Braunschweig to Wolfenbüttel, just south of the city. The reason was not without consequence: Braunschweig had asserted its municipal independence, and tensions between the citizens and the dukes had become too great. Wolfenbüttel thus became, in my words, the dukes’ escape route.
You can still see this reflected in the cityscape: wider streets than you would expect in a medieval city center, and some 700 half-timbered houses that are strikingly austere, lacking the extra ornamentation you see in other German half-timbered towns. This simplicity stemmed from the dukes’ ban on decorations, out of fear for their own position.
Wolfenbüttel Castle began as a medieval moated castle (first mentioned in 1074) and, over the centuries that followed, developed into one of the region’s most important princely residences. It remains the second-largest castle in Lower Saxony. The interior reveals multiple layers of history: starting in 1575, the courtyard was adorned with an Italian-style arcade in the Renaissance manner, and the building itself still features a two-aisled Renaissance hall dating from that same period.
However, most of what visitors see today dates from the Baroque period. Between 1690 and 1740, the dukes’ state and private apartments were furnished; these are the only High Baroque state apartments from the former Duchy of Brunswick that have retained their original interiors.
The beds are still made, the tables set, as if the dukes might return at any moment. Since 2024, the collection has also included an 18th-century Fürstenberg dinner service, known as the“Dutch Service,” one of Europe’s most important porcelain collections; 185 unique pieces, each featuring a different motif of Dutch coastal landscapes.
The museum itself was founded in 1904, when an archaeological collection was moved to the castle and eventually grew into what is now the Schloss Museum. Thus, a single building encompasses three centuries of architectural styles: medieval foundations underground, a Renaissance hall on the ground floor, and Baroque splendor on the floors above.
Wolfenbüttel is one of the ‘nine historic cities’ that the region of Lower Saxony now promotes collectively. Interestingly, Braunschweig ultimately failed to gain its independence: in 1671, the Saxon dukes recaptured the city with a united army, and Braunschweig once again came under ducal rule. As a result, Braunschweig was no longer a free Hanseatic city, and that loss also had an impact on Wolfenbüttel, where, from that point on, there were fewer artisans and gardeners than during the city’s heyday.
The main reason Wolfenbüttel deserves a place on Germany’s cultural map is the Herzog August Library, once one of the most important libraries in Europe. The most famous librarian to work here was Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, who wrote his famous play*Nathan the Wise* in Wolfenbüttel, with the parable of the rings at the heart of the story. In front of the library stands a statue of Nathan the Wise, a lovely reminder that this city has more to offer than just war and dukes.
Over the centuries, the library attracted even more notable visitors. In May 1764, Giacomo Casanova, having just escaped the gallows in London, spent eight days in Wolfenbüttel, much of that time at the Herzog August Bibliothek. What exactly drew him to this small town remains unclear to this day. Casanova himself would later claim that he spent the eight happiest days of his life here, spending hours among the books, working on a translation.
The Hauptkirche Beatae Mariae Virginis is considered the world’s first large, purely Protestant church, commissioned by Duke Heinrich Julius. A remarkable fact: at that time, there were simply no precedents for this type of church architecture, so everything had to be designed from scratch. The result combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements in a single building.
In addition to its first Protestant church, Wolfenbüttel can claim another first: Germany’s first permanent theater company. Duke Heinrich Julius, himself a theater enthusiast, brought an English acting troupe to his court in 1592, with the popular actor Thomas Sackville as its most famous member. What was intended to be a brief guest performance turned into a stay lasting several years: the troupe performed not only for the court but also right on the streets and in the town squares, for anyone who wanted to watch. Until then, there had been no permanent theater company anywhere in Germany, so Wolfenbüttel can rightly call itself the cradle of German theater.
The Mast Jägermeister company was founded in Wolfenbüttel in 1878, and its history is still palpable in the city. It’s a fun fact to keep in mind if you happen to be walking around here anyway.
One of the most charming spots in the city is Little Venice, where half-timbered houses line small canals. Dutch master builders designed this canal system to make the marshy land suitable for construction—a lovely example of Dutch involvement in a German town that otherwise seems to have little to do with the Netherlands.
There’s a market in Wolfenbüttel on Wednesdays and Saturdays—a great time to experience the town at its liveliest, with market stalls nestled among the half-timbered facades.
After the bike ride from Braunschweig, my visit ended with lunch at a beach club on the Oker—a surprisingly relaxing way to wrap up a visit to a city that’s otherwise best known for its history.
Yes, the two cities are within cycling distance of each other and complement each other well: Braunschweig is larger and has been rebuilt, while Wolfenbüttel is small-scale and largely original.
At the time, the city was less strategically and industrially important than Braunschweig, which is why it was largely spared.
