Agriturismo La Genziana: Sardinian Farm Life Near Alghero

Just a few hours ago, you were still at Schiphol Airport. Now you’re surrounded by olive trees, sheep, and donkeys in the countryside near Alghero, less than ten minutes from the sea. The sheep’s milk served at breakfast tastes like hay in the winter and like fresh grass in the spring. That’s what the family behind La Genziana says themselves, and it sums up well how things work here: what’s on the table comes from the land around you.

La Genziana is a family-run farm in Sa Segada, in northwestern Sardinia. It’s an active farm with a handful of rooms and apartments, a kitchen that prepares almost everything from scratch, and an eco-certification from the nearby Porto Conte Nature Park. The name comes from the gentian: a hardy plant that can withstand wind and weather, and from which they also distill a digestif here.

Sa Segada: countryside between the sea and the runway

Let me just get this out of the way: La Genziana is located 1 to 2 kilometers from Alghero Airport. That sounds like a drawback, and for some travelers, it is. However, in over a hundred guest reviews, we didn’t find a single complaint about airplane noise, and I didn’t hear a single airplane during my visit either.

That’s understandable. Alghero is a small airport with about 1.5 million passengers a year—a fraction of Schiphol’s traffic. Outside of July and August, it’s quiet in the skies. And the location has its advantages too: you don’t have to drive for hours after arriving, and for an early or late flight, it’s much more convenient than a hotel near the terminal.

Other than that, it’s mostly green. Twenty hectares of pastures, a vegetable garden, olive trees, and Mediterranean scrub. The center of Alghero is about ten kilometers away, and Le Bombarde Beach and the seaside resort of Fertilia are even closer.

A family business in the true sense of the word

The farm has been in the family for 38 years. Mother Filomena (Mena) is in the kitchen, father Antonio runs the farm, and daughters Silvia and Annalisa welcome guests and speak English well. You’ll feel right at home here in no time—almost like part of the family. If you have any special requests, they’ll be happy to work with you to make them happen.

Sheep, goats, pigs, horses, donkeys, chickens, ducks, and bees roam the yard, along with a few of the family’s dogs. Kids love it. Whether you’re traveling with a dog yourself or don’t like dogs at all, this is good to know.

Sardinian-style rooms and apartments

You’ll stay in one of the 7 rooms or in an apartment in the old farmhouse. All units have their own entrance and private patio. The decor combines Sardinian tradition with a modern twist: wrought-iron beds, wood carvings, ceramics, and linen curtains and bedspreads woven locally on a loom.

The airy rooms are named after Sardinian plants found in the mountains of Barbagia. The apartments are called Olostri (holly) and Armidda (wild thyme). Olostri is located on the ground floor and features a veranda and a living room with a fireplace. Armidda is located on the first floor and has a small terrace. Both have a kitchenette, two bedrooms, and a bathroom, and can accommodate four people.

There is also a studio with a kitchenette, and one room has been adapted for guests with disabilities. The common areas are also accessible.

Breakfast and dinner: from our own farm to your plate

If there’s one reason to stay here, it’s the food. About 80 percent of what you eat comes from the farm. Breakfast features products you won’t find in a typical hotel: fresh sheep’s milk, sa frue (curdled whole milk eaten with thin crispbread, pane carasau), sheep’s ricotta, and su gihoddu, Sardinian yogurt with honey. Plus, the most delicious homemade cakes, cookies, jam, eggs from their own chickens, and cheese.

Dinner is for guests only, and you can choose between bed and breakfast or half-board for each stay. On the menu: handmade pasta such as ravioli with ricotta and malloreddos, pane frattau, lamb with wild fennel or myrtle, suckling pig, and lamb with potatoes and onions. For dessert, seadas—a deep-fried pastry with pecorino and lemon zest. The wine comes from the region around Alghero. You’ll finish your meal with the house gentian digestif.

Vegetarian and gluten-free meals are available. Please let us know in advance.

Nature right around the corner: Porto Conte and Capo Caccia

La Genziana is a great base for exploring the Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Conte, one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Sardinia. Here are a few tips within a half-hour drive:

  • Capo Caccia: the limestone cape that, when viewed from the sea, resembles a sleeping giant. At the top, you can walk along the cliffs with a view of the island of Foradada.
  • Grotta di Nettuno: one of the most beautiful stalactite caves in the Mediterranean. You can reach it by boat from Alghero, or on foot via the Escala del Cabirol, a 656-step climb along the rock face.
  • Punta Giglio: a hike through the macchia to an old military battery on the cape opposite Capo Caccia. Beautiful in the spring, when everything is in bloom.
  • Le Prigionette: a nature reserve within the park home to wild Giara ponies, white Asinara donkeys, and fallow deer. You can hike and bike there.
  • Stagno del Calich: a lagoon between Fertilia and the airport, home to flamingos and other waterfowl.
  • Nuraghe di Palmavera and the Anghelu Ruju necropolis: two archaeological highlights from Sardinia’s prehistory, both located near the farm.

La Genziana rents out bicycles and e-bikes. There is a bike path along the coast from Fertilia to Alghero, and the flat roads of the Nurra are ideal for leisurely rides.

Sustainable Stays on a Working Farm

La Genziana has the Marchio di Qualità Ambientale from the Porto Conte Nature Park, a certification for businesses that meet ecological, social, and economic standards. Specifically: solar water heaters, water-saving faucets and toilets, over 80 percent waste separation, no plastic bottles or disposable packaging, eco-friendly cleaning products, and locally made furniture.

What you don’t see is just as important. The farm collaborates with local schools and organizes workshops on spinning and dyeing wool, shearing sheep, and natural dyes. Adult guests can help out with seasonal farm work. This helps preserve knowledge about Sardinian farm life, and keeps your money in the region.

Don’t want to fly? Ferries depart from Genoa and Livorno to Porto Torres, about a 40-minute drive from La Genziana. About 700 meters from the farm, the city bus that runs between Alghero, Fertilia, and the airport stops, so you won’t need a rental car for the first few days.

What Guests Say

La Genziana receives high ratings for its staff. The agriturismo is also ranked among the top 3 agriturismos near Alghero.

A common theme in the reviews: a warm and welcoming family, a generous breakfast, and especially the dinner, which many guests call the highlight of their trip. A British guest describes it as an agriturismo as it should be, where most of the food comes from their own land. An American guest calls it a gem just outside Alghero. A Dutch couple was upgraded to an apartment when their room was undergoing maintenance.

One possible downside might be the Wi-Fi, which is a bit slower than we’re used to. Also, this isn’t the place for you if you don’t like dogs.

Who is La Genziana for?

For couples and families who want to discover Sardinia through its food and countryside, and for those who want to explore the coast of Alghero and Porto Conte from a peaceful base.
