When you say “Dolomites,” you think of Cortina, cable cars, and packed parking lots at the Tre Cime. To the south of there, where the mountains give way to green hills, lies Feltre: a medieval town with city walls and painted palazzi. Four kilometers away, on a tree-lined avenue leading to the small square in the hamlet of Cart, stands an old stone barn. Since 2014, it has been called Al Nido di Cart, the nest of Cart in Veneto, Italy.
The house is rented out as a whole to a single group of up to 25 people. This makes it a great place for families, groups of friends, or a hiking club looking to explore the Vette Feltrine together. You book direct with the owner, with no middleman.
Al Nido di Cart is a carefully renovated stone barn. The stone facade, sloping roofs, and original details have been preserved. Inside, you’ll find wooden beams, terracotta floors, and rustic furniture. It’s not sleek or chic, but it is warm and authentic.
The house is located at an elevation of 400 meters, on a 5-hectare property surrounded by woods and hills. There are no neighbors. The Dolomiti Bellunesi mountains are just a stone’s throw away. And there’s a local restaurant just a five-minute walk away.
The Al Nido di Cart house consists of two separate apartments that are always rented out together. In total, there are six bedrooms, each with two to four beds.
You can choose from two options. The full package includes bedding, blankets, towels, and kitchenware. With the more affordable hostel option, you’ll need to bring your own bedding and towels.
Good to know: Breakfast and other meals are not provided. Under Italian law, this type of accommodation is not permitted to offer them. So you’ll need to cook for yourself in one of the two kitchens, go to the restaurant around the corner, or arrange for catering if you’re having a party.
Are you traveling with an even larger group? The owner partners with two other accommodations located about 3 kilometers away, each accommodating up to 12 guests. Together, the three homes can accommodate groups of up to about 50 people.
After a day in the mountains, you can relax in the five-person hot tub under the stars. There’s also a barbecue, lounge chairs in the garden, and a field for soccer and volleyball.
Note: The hot tub, barbecue, and sports field are additional amenities that can be reserved upon request. There are garages for bicycles and motorcycles, and you can park your car on the property.
The house is primarily a base for exploring. Within an hour’s drive, you can be in a national park, by a fjord-like lake, in a gorge, or among the Prosecco hills. But you’re also just a two-hour drive from Venice.
Feltre is one of the gateways to the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, the quietest part of the Dolomites and part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. Directly above the town lie the Vette Feltrine: high alpine meadows, limestone cliffs, and exceptionally rich flora. Here you can hike for hours without encountering any other hikers. It’s exactly the kind of place Nature Travel Lab is looking for.
Feltre is located 4 kilometers from the house, with its medieval city walls, painted facades, and streets that climb steeply up to the central square. Visit the cathedral, the Castello di Alboino, the Porta Imperiale, and the small historic theater, Teatro de la Sena. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing day or an evening stroll.
Monte Avena is Feltre’s local mountain. You can go paragliding over the valley, or simply hike to the top to enjoy the view. Finish your day at Malga Campet with polenta and pastìn, the local sausage.
The owner collaborates with local partners to offer e-bike rentals and bike tours, including routes that take you past the Palladian villas in the area. If you enjoy cycling, you can also follow the Via Claudia Augusta, a cycling route along an ancient Roman road that passes through Feltre. For a more adrenaline-fueled experience, a local team organizes rafting and canyoning on the Brenta River. In the winter, the owner arranges ski rentals.
Spring and fall are the best seasons for hiking and biking around Feltre. It’s quiet then, the temperatures are pleasant, and the mountain meadows are in bloom in May and June. In the summer, the lakes offer a nice way to cool off. In winter, the underfloor heating keeps the house warm, and you can quickly reach the nearby ski resorts. Al Nido di Cart is open year-round.
Activities offered through local partners: e-bike tours, rafting, yoga, and cooking classes
