Hotel Terradets in Cellers: a family-run hotel on the lake at the foot of Montsec

Hotel Terradets: Sleep by the lake, wake up beneath the Montsec

At 7:30 in the morning, Lake Terradets is so still that the Montsec seems to exist twice: once in stone and once in water. If you’re standing on the balcony with a cup of coffee at that moment, you’ll understand why the great-grandfather of the current owners chose to open an inn right here. Everyone traveling through the Terradets Gorge on their way to the Pallars passed by his door.

More than a hundred years later, that inn—now Hotel Terradets—is still owned by the same family. It’s located in the hamlet of Cellers, on the shores of the Terradets reservoir in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees. Travelers no longer come here with donkeys and merchandise, but with hiking boots, a bicycle, or a telescope in the trunk. The reason remains the same: this is a place where you’ll want to linger for a while.

I arrived there in June 2025, at the end of a tour of the Val de Lleida. The plan was to have a quick lunch. It turned out to be a long one.

Cellers and Lake Terradets: Where the Montsec Opens Up

Cellers is part of the municipality of Castell de Mur, in the Pallars Jussà region (province of Lleida). Just south of the hotel, the Noguera Pallaresa River has carved its way through the Montsec. The result is the Congost de Terradets: a narrow gorge with sheer rock walls, behind which lies the lake that gave the hotel its name. The water changes color throughout the day—gray-green in the morning, deep blue around noon, and coppery at sunset.

The entire area is part of the Orígens Geoparc, recognized by UNESCO since 2018 as a Global Geopark under the name Conca de Tremp-Montsec. The park encompasses nineteen municipalities and covers more than 2,000 square kilometers. The story the geopark tells is that of Europe’s last dinosaurs: countless bones, eggs, and tracks have been found in the red earth around Tremp. Here, you literally drive through the history of the Earth, visible layer by layer in the rock faces.

The hotel: an inn that has remained a family business

Hotel Terradets is a three-star hotel right on the water. The outdoor pool and sun terrace overlook the lake and the Montsec mountains, and that view is the first thing mentioned in virtually every guest review. The atmosphere is homey and relaxed; as the family puts it themselves: warm and familiar, passed down from generation to generation.

The restaurant has a history spanning more than seventy years. At Restaurant Del Llac, you can enjoy cuisine featuring seasonal dishes, local ingredients, and Catalan roots, with a contemporary twist. Vegetarian menus are available, as well as gluten-free and lactose-free options. In addition, the hotel has a buffet restaurant and a cafeteria, which are convenient for a quick lunch before or after a walk.

I was sitting inside the restaurant myself, at a table overlooking the water. We were served a local menu paired with a good glass of wine—the kind of lunch that makes you unknowingly cut the afternoon’s schedule short. I took a picture of the dessert before I ate it: strawberry ice cream with chocolate cake.

Rooms with a view of the lake

Most rooms have a balcony and a view you won’t soon forget. If you want to see the lake from your bed, choose carefully:

  • Superior Double with Lake View: fully renovated, hardwood floors, and a guaranteed lake view. The best choice for most couples.
  • Premium Double: spacious and renovated, with a view of the pool or the mountains.
  • Superior suite: the most spacious room, featuring a king-size bed, a sitting area, a refrigerator, and a large balcony with the most beautiful view of the lake.
  • Standard double: comfortable and simple, also with a balcony.
  • Double Penthouse: Cozy, with a sloped wooden ceiling. According to the hotel, it’s the perfect place to hide if you don’t want to be found.
  • Family penthouse and penthouse for three or four people: for families or friends traveling together.

All rooms have air conditioning, heating, Wi-Fi, a hair dryer, and satellite TV.

To be honest: larger than your average overnight stay

Hotel Terradets is not a small-scale bed-and-breakfast. It has a buffet restaurant, a kids’ club, a padel court, and a room for meetings and events. It’s lively there in the summer. When I walked in, I honestly expected a somewhat impersonal atmosphere. The opposite was true: it felt warm and personal, as if you were joining someone for a meal at their home—who just happens to have a big house.

So why is it listed on Nature Travel Lab? Because it’s a true family business that’s been connected to this lake for four generations. Because it’s Biosphere-certified and sources its supplies locally. Because you can get there by train. And above all, because it takes you to a region that most travelers still overlook. The Montsec isn’t the Costa Brava—and that’s exactly the point.

Guests are particularly complimentary about the location, the pool, the breakfast, and the staff. Common points of criticism include: some standard rooms are compact, and not every part of the hotel has been renovated yet. If space and a view are important to you, book a renovated room with a lake view.

Sustainability: Biosphere-certified

Since 2022, Hotel Terradets has held the Biosphere certification, an international sustainability certification that aligns with the goals of the United Nations. The certification was renewed in November 2025. Among other things, the hotel focuses on water conservation and reuse, energy efficiency and renewable energy wherever possible, local sourcing, reducing food waste, hiring local staff, and supporting the region’s cultural and natural heritage.

On top of that, there’s what you don’t see on a certificate: the hotel is located along a railroad line, is part of the region’s bike-friendly network, and connects guests with local producers such as beekeepers and cheesemakers. And the nights there are still truly dark.

Hiking, Biking, and Kayaking Around the Montsec

Hotel Terradets calls itself a starting point for hiking, biking, and mountain biking trails—and that’s no empty claim. A few highlights:

  • Congost de Mont-rebei: Catalonia’s most famous gorge and the last major gorge to remain virtually untouched, with no roads, dams, or high-voltage power lines. The Noguera Ribagorçana River has carved out cliffs here that are over 500 meters high. The trail is hewn out of the rock, featuring suspension bridges and wooden stairs clinging to the cliff face. Expect a 45-minute to one-hour drive to the trailhead at La Clua.
  • The Terradets Gorge right from your doorstep: from the hotel, walk along the lake to the El Pago viewpoint and the bridge over the reservoir, then continue along the old road through the gorge.
  • Cova dels Muricecs by kayak: The hotel organizes a kayak trip across the lake to the Cova dels Muricecs, a cave that is home to one of the largest bat colonies in Catalonia. The main chamber is approximately 25 meters long and 9 meters high. Archaeologists have found traces of Neanderthals and Bronze Age bracelets there.
  • Castell de Mur and the Col·legiata de Santa Maria de Mur: a medieval border castle with a Romanesque collegiate church, consecrated in 1069. From the hill, you can look out over the Conca de Tremp and the lake. If you want to see Romanesque heritage with a distinctly contemporary twist, drive further north to Seurí to see the modern frescoes by Santi Moix.
  • Llimiana: the little village across the lake, with narrow streets and views of the valley.
  • Cycling: The Ruta dels Llacs follows the railroad line between Cellers, Tremp, and La Pobla de Segur. Road cyclists ride the loop around the Montsec, including the bumpy but beautiful stretch along the lake near Castell de Mur.

Under the stars of Montsec

Far from big cities, the night here is still dark. In 2013, Montsec became the second place in the world to be designated both a Starlight Reserve and a Starlight Tourist Destination—a designation endorsed by UNESCO.

About a 25-minute drive away is the Parc Astronòmic del Montsec in Àger, which the Starlight Award has named the best place in Catalonia for stargazing. Or you can just pull up a chair on your balcony.

Local Tasting: From Honey to Artisanal Cheese

Hotel Terradets aims to connect guests with the region, including at the table. Through the hotel, you can spend a day as a beekeeper and learn how bees live and why they’re so important. Or you can tour an artisanal cheese factory that produces everything in-house. Afterward, you’ll get to taste those same products at Restaurant Del Llac.

By train to Cellers

This is one of the few nature hotels in Spain that you can reach without a car. Cellers-Llimiana Station is located right near the hotel, on the Lleida–La Pobla de Segur railway line. From the Netherlands or Belgium, take the train to Barcelona, then continue on to Lleida, where you’ll board the regional train heading into the mountains.

On Saturdays in the spring and fall, the Tren dels Llacs runs along the same route: a historic train that travels from Lleida to La Pobla de Segur in about two hours, passing through 40 tunnels and over 75 bridges, along Lake Cellers and the Terradets Gorge. Even if you come by car, it’s a day trip in itself.

Best time to visit

Spring (April through June) and fall (September through November) are ideal for hiking and biking: pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and the most beautiful light in the gorges. Summer is warm and the best time for the pool and water activities, but it’s also the busiest. In winter, it’s quiet by the lake, and the starry nights are at their most spectacular. Please note: Restaurant Del Llac is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
