Hiking Vacation in Málaga: Enjoy the Sun, Mountains, and Silence

Hiking in Andalusia: A 7-Day Hiking Vacation Near Málaga

When you think of Andalusia, you might think mainly of beaches, flamenco, or the city of Seville. But the mountains around Málaga really surprised me. In Andalusia, you can go hiking in the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama: a vast area with rugged peaks, deep valleys, and endless hiking trails, including what’s officially considered Spain’s most beautiful hiking route.

Together with a boutique hotel in the area, we’ve put together the 7-day Málaga hiking vacation. You can request this trip through us. You’ll book and pay directly with the hotel. Go directly to more information and booking.

Hiking Vacation in Málaga: Hike in the Mountains on Beautiful Trails

During this trip, you’ll discover, among other things, the trail Caminito del Rey de Axarquía, recently named Spain’s most beautiful hiking trail. You’ll walk through centuries-old villages, past olive groves, and enjoy views of both the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea at every turn.

And after a day in the mountains, you can be at the coast in half an hour. It’s perfect if you want to combine hiking with a refreshing swim.

When you go hiking in the mountains of Málaga for the first time, one thing immediately stands out: peace and quiet. While down on the coast you can feel the hustle and bustle of the Costa del Sol, here in the mountains silence reigns. You hear the sound of birds, the rustling of the wind, and occasionally a goat with a bell around its neck. And all of this under an almost always shining sun. Málaga, after all, has more than 320 sunny days a year.

I think it’s the perfect combination: hiking in nature, soaking up the culture in white mountain villages, and enjoying a delicious Spanish dinner in the evening.

Staying at a Hidden Gem: Málaga Hills

Your stay makes this trip extra special. The Málaga Hills Boutique & Wellness Hotel is small-scale, with only five rooms, and is often described by guests as a hidden gem. I understand why: you’ll feel right at home here.

My room had a large private terrace with a view of the mountains. In the morning, I was served a fresh breakfast at my table, with a view of the sea in the distance. After a day of hiking, I could take a dip in the heated pool, relax in the sauna, or just plop down on the terrace with a glass of local wine. The hotel is also certified as sustainable, which is obviously a big plus for Nature Travel Lab.

It’s located just outside Cómpeta, a charming white village full of cozy restaurants where you can enjoy fantastic food for a fraction of the price you’d pay in Northern Europe.

The Hiking Program: 7 Days of Nature and Relaxation

Every morning, you’ll receive a brief briefing at the hotel. After that, you’ll set out with a clear route and hike at your own pace.

Caminito del Rey de la Axarquía: Málaga’s hidden gem

At the end of 2024, the Spanish Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing (FEDME) named this hiking trail the best certified hiking trail in Spain. The Cómpeta–Canillas de Aceituno route, part of the Gran Senda de Málaga (GR 249), received this prestigious title. And, quite rightly so.

An adventure that begins in Cómpeta

The route starts in the white village of Cómpeta, just behind an old church. You can start the route with a cup of coffee in the cozy village square before setting out on the hike. Soon you’ll follow a picturesque path toward Canillas de Albaida, after which the trail winds through river valleys, over ancient Roman and Moorish bridges, and past oak forests.

The entire route is 24 kilometers long and takes about 9 hours to walk. You’ll pass through charming villages like Salares and Sedella, while constantly being treated to views of the Mediterranean Sea and the rugged peaks of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama. Nature lover? It’s the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and cultural heritage.

Highlights of the Caminito del Rey in the Axarquía

What makes this route so special are the contrasts and the stories hidden within the landscape:

  • The Saltillo Bridge and Gorges: perhaps the most impressive part of the route. The suspension bridges and deep gorges are guaranteed to give you goosebumps (and a serious adrenaline rush).
  • Historic bridges: Along the way, you’ll cross rivers via bridges from different eras: Roman, Moorish, and modern.
  • Spectacular views: from ancient watchtowers, you can look out over white villages and jagged mountain peaks.
  • Diverse landscapes: from terraced orchards near Cómpeta and Canillas de Albaida to oak forests around Salares and fragrant pine forests near Sedella and Canillas de Aceituno.

A trail rich in culture and nature

The route of the Caminito del Rey in the Axarquía officially begins at the Hermitage of San Antonio in Cómpeta and ends at the artwork “Tribute to the Vineyard Farmer” in Canillas de Aceituno. You’ll not only walk through stunning natural scenery, but also along centuries-old irrigation channels that still carry water to the orchards. For generations, these paths have served as the link between the white villages in the mountains.

Whether you’re taking a break in the shade of an oak tree, strolling through a picturesque village, or crossing the Saltillo Bridge, this route will make you feel like you’re walking right in the heart of Andalusia. If you love nature, culture, and a touch of adventure, this trail is a must-do.

Why go hiking near Malaga?

What I really enjoyed was the balance between being active and relaxing. During the day, you go on beautiful hikes, away from mass tourism and crowded trails. In the afternoon, you return to the tranquility of the hotel, where you can swim, read a book, or simply enjoy the sun.

It’s the ideal place if you’re looking for nature, but also comfort and a touch of luxury. And best of all: you really feel like you’re getting away from it all here, even though Málaga Airport is just an hour’s drive away.
