Monferrato: The Most Beautiful Routes and an Authentic Experience
Monferrato? This region in Piedmont is much less well-known than the neighboring Langhe. The same goes for its wines. But it’s no less beautiful, and the cuisine and wines are delicious. That’s why this part of Piedmont is also considerably more affordable and pleasantly quiet. Read on to find out why you’ll want to see and explore this lesser-known corner of Piedmont.
Where is Monferrato?
The area is actually the lesser-known counterpart to the neighboring Langhe region in Piedmont. It lies southeast of Turin.
The “Langhe-Monferrato-Roero” are not separate provinces of Piedmont, but are distinguished from one another only geologically. The Monferrato region is located in the provinces of Alessandria and Asti. Are you still following? The best way to distinguish them is actually by the different wines produced there.
The rolling hills of the region, reminiscent of Tuscany, are every bit as beautiful as the more famous Langhe. Hills covered with vineyards, walnut trees, and forests alternate with medieval villages and castles steeped in centuries of history.
Once a kingdom, the region became a county in the 11th century. You can still sense its noble atmosphere in the many villages and castles. The residents are proud of their land and are committed to preserving its heritage through annual events.
Monferrato is a large region that—along with the Langhe and Roero—forms the heart of Piedmont. Its main city is Asti. Other major cities include Acqui Terme and Ovada.
Main city: Asti
The city of the famous writer Vittorio Alfieri, singer Paolo Conte, and the Palio di Asti. It’s not as well-known a horse race as the one in Siena, but it is the oldest in Italy and a still very vibrant annual tradition.
Asti is a charming medieval town that once had more than 100 towers, 12 of which still stand today. The taller the tower, the greater the family’s wealth. The city has several city parks. With a Smart Ticket, you have access to all 8 museums in the city.
Moncalvo and the Lower Monferrato
The smallest town in Italy and once the capital of the County of Monferrato. Moncalvo is surrounded by historic villages that served as the backdrop for battles against Asti, the House of Savoy, and the bishops. A beautiful region with hundreds of hills that slope down into the Vercelli Valley with its rice paddies.
Monferrato Wine Region
This wine region is an open secret in Piedmont, but it’s not as well known among foreign tourists. They tend to opt for the better-known Langhe region, because of its famous wines like Barolo. Yet Monferrato is also a region for gourmets and wine lovers. All the more reason to discover its wines.
The region produces several DOCG* wines. The best known are probably the Asti Spumante DOCG and the Moscato d’Asti DOCG, made from 100% Moscato grapes.
Among the red wines, the Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOCG is the most important, but the Barbera del Monferrato Superiore DOCG, Dolcetto d’Ovada Superiore DOCG, and Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG are also well-known red wines.
TIP: Want to spend the night among the vineyards? At Monvirelais, you can spend the night among the vineyards. This organic winemaker recently built a beautiful guesthouse on a hill in the middle of the vineyards.
Infernot of Monferrato, UNESCO Wine Cellars
Monferrato owes its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014 not only to its landscape but also to the “Infernot”: ancient underground cellars carved into sandstone (“Pietra da Cantoni”). Here, wine bottles are stored at a constant temperature and humidity. The sandstone is a remnant of the seabed that characterized Monferrato between 5.5 and 3 million years ago.
The tunnels, sometimes meters deep underground, are remarkable and functional works of art, built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by local masons with no knowledge of architecture or science. They are all different and unique. You can find the Infernot in several villages, especially between Asti and Casale Monferrato. In fourteen villages in Monferrato, the Infernot can be visited (by appointment).
The Most Beautiful Route Through Monferrato, Past Ancient Borghi and the Strade del Vino
Actually, all the villages and small towns in the area are worth visiting.
Just like in Tuscany, Piedmont also has its own “Strade del Vino.”
For example, the Strade del Vino Astesane is a route of about 50 kilometers between Asti and Acqui Terme.
The Strade del Vino Alto Monferrato runs through the eastern part of the region, from Acqui Terme to the Ovada area. This is primarily a route through red wine-growing regions.
In addition, there are the Strade del Vino Monferrato Astigiano, which feature a mix of traditional and innovative wine regions.
The routes are marked with distinctive signs.
In addition to the wine routes, the route through the villages and towns listed below is also recommended:
Cocconato: located nearly 500 meters above sea level, with a particularly mild climate and excellent Barbera wines and cheeses.
Moncalvo: a beautiful borgo and the smallest town in Italy, famous for its annual truffle fair in October.
Asti: home to a beautiful cathedral, a paleontological museum, a covered market, and a well-preserved historic center. See other highlights above.
Canelli: famous for its Asti spumante; it hosts a wine and music festival in June and is designated a “città del vino” in September.
Castagnole delle Lanze: located near Alba, with a beautiful historic center and a tower offering stunning views of the entire area all the way to the Alps.
Nizza Monferrato: the capital of Barbera d’Asti and home to local dishes such as bagna cauda (a warm sauce with anchovies and garlic). It has a beautiful historic center with a famous antique market held every third Sunday of the month.
Rosignano Monferrato: known for its infernots (which can be visited by appointment) and a 4-km marked truffle trail through nature.
Ozzano Monferrato: in addition to its historic center with a beautiful church and castle, it is a town with a mining history.
Ottiglio: Here, too, in addition to a stunning view, there’s another “inferno” worth visiting and a good restaurant, Cave di Moleto (serving vegetarian and gluten-free dishes), in the neighboring town of Moleto.
Gavi in the Val di Lemme: the 12th-century Church of San Giacomo in the town center, excellent (white) wines, and the beautiful Neirone Nature reserve.
Monferrato: A UNESCO Landscape and Culinary Delights
The Langhe-Monferrato-Roero landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, just like that of Valdobbiadene in Veneto. Every 6 to 10 kilometers, you’ll come across a medieval village. In addition to its UNESCO-designated landscape, cultural events and gastronomy play a major role in the region. Piedmont’s cuisine is world-renowned. The“slow food” traditionwas first initiated in Bra. Monferrato also has its own unique cuisine, with “bagna cauda,” truffles, agnolotti (stuffed pasta), and “bunet” (a chocolate dessert) being delicious examples.
TIP: Picnic in the vineyards. Are you going for a walk or bike ride in the area? Order a picnic from Giovanni. Fresh lunch and a wide selection (including vegetarian and gluten-free options). Delivered to your desired destination.
Grande Cammino del Monferrato, a food and wine hiking trail
Monferrato is a beautiful area for hiking. It features a varied landscape of vineyards, forests, and meadows, as well as plenty of good restaurants for a break along the way. The most famous hike is“Il Grande Cammino del Monferrato,” a food-and-wine trail that forms a loop totaling 382 km.
The route is divided into 18 stages. You can take a one-day or multi-day trip by linking the different stages together.
The Cammino runs from Casale Monferrato to Asti, Vignale Monferrato, Castagnole delle Lanze, Canelli, Ovada, Gavi, Nizza Monferrato, Acqui Terme, Montemagno, and Lu Monferrato, among other places. In total, it passes through no fewer than 65 interesting villages and towns.
Cycling in Monferrato
The hilly region is also ideal for a relaxing cycling or e-bike vacation. The roads are quiet, and in some places there are even bike paths. You can enjoy beautiful rides from village to village or even mountain bike through the vineyards.
Bike route I took starting from Agriturismo Tenuta la Romana: Nizza Monferrato, Castelnuovo Calcea, Mombercelli, Vinchio, Vaglio Serra, and back to Nizza Monferrato. This is a ride of about 30 kilometers. The roads are quiet and gently rolling. In some places, there are even marked bike lanes or separate bike paths.
Another beautiful bike route, for example, runs along the Tannaro River from Asti to Alessandria: from Asti to Azzano d’Asti, Rocchetta Tanaro, Masio, Oviglio, and finally to Alessandria. Click here for even more beautiful bike routes.
Here, you can rent e-mountain bikes or book organized tours.
Protected Areas in Monferrato
Valleandona, Valle Botto, and Val Grande Nature Reserve
Just outside Asti, you can enjoy beautiful hikes in this nature reserve, perhaps with a guide. The area is of great value due to the discovery of fossils and shells dating back millions of years.
Val Sarmassa Nature Reserve
A predominantly forested area in the hills south of Asti, around Vinchio. A nature reserve established only in the 1990s (by local residents) to protect the area from further exploitation. Ancient oaks, wild orchids, historic huts, and paleontological finds and fossils from the Pliocene make this area particularly special. Preserving the area also ensures that the Barbera wines produced here are safeguarded and protected.
Rocchetta Tanaro Nature Park
A 120-hectare forest just south of Asti, home to oak trees as well as centuries-old beech trees. It is home to unique flowers and as many as 40 species of breeding birds, including the green woodpecker, the lesser spotted woodpecker, and the tawny owl. Guided hikes are available here. Reservations can be made through Asti Paleontologico.
Neirone Nature Reserve in Gavi
A protected nature reserve along the Neirone River. The park has only one trail, set amid nature. The anemone with purple flowers has been blooming here since ancient times, starting in late February. You can reach the park from Gavi. The trail is easily accessible, though conditions may vary depending on the weather. How do you get to Monferrato?
From Utrecht, it’s about 1,140 kilometers by car.
You can reach the area via Paris by train (and bus) in about 17 hours.
You can fly to Milan, Turin, or Genoa.
When is the best time to visit Monferrato?
May and June, in particular, are attractive in terms of temperature and blooming. Late summer (September and October) is interesting not only for its colorful landscape but also for the grape harvest, truffles, and local festivals. It gets very hot during the summer months.
Accommodation Tip: Monferrato
At Vineho in Barolo (Langhe), you can stay in luxurious two-person vacation homes nestled among the vineyards.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.

Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
