Serra da Estrela, a protected nature reserve in central Portugal
Portugal is all about sun, sea, and pastel-colored towns. That’s true. But if you take the highway inland and head toward Central Portugal, you’ll discover a completely different country. A land of granite and glacial valleys, of the scent of pine and vast, quiet plateaus. A mountainous landscape that only took on its current form after thousands of years of ice, wind, and erosion—and which today is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets.
The Serra da Estrela is Portugal’s largest protected nature reserve. No mass tourism, no packed parking lots, no lines. Instead, more than 375 kilometers of hiking trails, spectacular bike routes along volcanic peaks and glacial valleys, and a landscape that reveals a different side of itself in every season. Discover the real Portugal: on foot or by bike.
What Is the Serra da Estrela? Nature, Geology, and UNESCO Recognition
The Serra da Estrela is a mountain range in the heart of Portugal, stretching across more than 100,000 hectares and nine municipalities. It has been a protected nature park since 1976—the largest in Portugal. But the landscape itself is much older than that protected status. Its foundations were laid some 300 million years ago, when continents collided and molten magma solidified into granite. Millions of years later, during the last ice age, glacial tongues carved the valleys wide and deep. The result: a landscape that looks as if a giant had shaped it—with enormous granite boulders, narrow mountain lakes, and valleys that run straight as an arrow into the mountains.
In 2020, the area was designated a UNESCO Geopark under the name Estrela Geopark. This recognition is well-deserved: the geological diversity is exceptional, with rocks dating back some 600 million years. But the Serra da Estrela is also a living landscape. You’ll find sheep on the plateau (of the breed that produces the famous Serra da Estrela cheese), the distinctive Serra da Estrela dog (one of the oldest breeds in the Iberian Peninsula), and a rich variety of flora, including juniper, heather, broom, and wildflowers.
The Most Beautiful Spots in the Park
The Serra da Estrela is large enough to get lost in (about the size of the province of Utrecht), but compact enough to see the highlights over a long weekend. These are the places you shouldn’t miss.
Torre: 1,993 meters above sea level
Torre is the highest peak on the Portuguese mainland and the most visited spot in the park. The drive there is an experience in itself: winding mountain passes with panoramic views of the plateau, which can be covered in a thick layer of snow in winter. Once you reach the top, you’ll find a wide plateau with a stone tower rising above it as the “official” 2,000-meter landmark. On a clear day, the view extends deep into Spain.
Accessible on foot via various trail routes, but also by road.
Covão dos Conchos: The Vanishing Lake
One of the most iconic spots in the park (and one you won’t find anywhere else in Europe). At first glance, it looks like an ordinary mountain lake. But in the middle is a circular opening—a sort of stone funnel through which the water disappears. It is actually a hydraulic engineering structure from 1955, built to channel water from Lagoa Comprida through a tunnel to a lower reservoir. But the sight—the water vanishing in the middle of the tranquil mountain lake—is undeniably magical.
The hiking trail from Lagoa Comprida to Covão dos Conchos is suitable for all skill levels.
Vale do Rossim: glacial plateau and mountain lake
At an elevation of 1,437 meters, in the heart of the park, lies the Valle do Rossim: a vast glacial plateau with a clear mountain lake that has served as grazing land for sheep for centuries. Today, it’s a peaceful spot for kayaking, hiking, or simply sitting on the shore.
The trail along the lake is one of the most beautiful and peaceful walks in the park. It is also suitable for mountain bikers.
Manteigas and the Zêzere Valley
Manteigas is a small spa village in the green heart of the park, located in the spectacular Zêzer Valley—the largest glacial valley on the Iberian Plateau. Some of the park’s most beautiful hiking trails begin and end around the village, including the trail that passes by the Poço do Inferno waterfall.
The Fragão do Corvo and Penhas Douradas (the golden rock formations at an elevation of 1,450 meters) are within cycling distance and offer spectacular views of the valley and the city of Guarda.
Praia Fluvial de Loriga: a river beach in the glacial valley
After a long day of hiking, there’s nothing better than a dip in the ice-cold water of a Portuguese river beach. Praia Fluvial de Loriga, located in the Loriga glacial valley, is one of the most beautiful. Surrounded by granite and mountainsides, it features a beach bar where you can grab a sandwich afterward. Note: In the summer, it’s a popular local spot, so be sure to arrive early.
Linhares da Beira: a medieval mountain village
If you want to understand what life in the mountains was like for centuries, you should visit Linhares da Beira. This medieval mountain village is remarkably well-preserved: stone houses, the ruins of a medieval castle, and narrow streets where no cars drive. On clear days, paragliders circle above the village; the thermals there are excellent. Folgosinho, a few kilometers away, has a similar atmosphere and is home to the legendary Café Albertino, where you don’t need a menu.
Hiking in the Serra da Estrela
The Serra da Estrela hiking network is the most extensive of all Portuguese nature parks. With more than 375 kilometers of marked trails—divided into three main routes (T1, T2, and T3) and six side routes—there’s something for every pace and skill level. Whether you’re going for a two-hour hike or planning a multi-day trek, the scenery is always rewarding.
Easy: for couples and beginners
If you’re not looking for a physical challenge but still want to experience the landscape on foot, these are the routes for you:
Covão dos Conchos Trail: a rustic gravel trail from Lagoa Comprida to the famous disappearing lake. Minimal elevation gain, but well worth the effort. Suitable for everyone, including dogs.
Vale do Rossim: a leisurely loop hike around the mountain lake of the same name at 1,437 meters. It’s especially beautiful in the morning when fog hangs over the water.
Penhas Douradas: a short but scenic route along the golden-colored rock formations, offering panoramic views of the Zêzer Valley.
Half-day: for active hikers
If you want to cover more kilometers and aren’t afraid of a little elevation gain, here’s a selection of some of Portugal’s most beautiful half-day routes:
Rota das Faias: one of the most beloved trails in the park—and for good reason. The trail winds through dense beech forests, passing by the São Lourenço Chapel, among other sights. In the fall, the forest transforms into an explosion of ochre, red, and gold. The scent of rosemary, wild mint, and thyme. More than just a walk, it’s a sensory experience and a connection with nature—especially at sunrise, as you wait for the first rays of sunlight at the chapel.
Poço do Inferno: a trail starting in Manteigas that takes you past majestic coniferous forests and up to the waterfall of the same name. In winter, the water freezes into spectacular ice formations.
Garganta de Loriga: According to AllTrails, the park’s highest-rated trail (4.6 stars). A linear trail that takes you along the Loriga Gorge to Lagoa da Beatriz. It’s a steep descent, but the views are well worth the effort.
Multi-day treks: the long-distance trails
If you really want to immerse yourself in the park, the three main trails—T1, T2, and T3—offer multi-day backpacking trips through the heart of the Serra da Estrela. Each route takes three to four days and winds through varied landscapes: from granite plateaus to green valleys, from villages with slate-roofed houses to the barren plateau around Torre. The GR33 (the Great Zêzere Route) is also an impressive, longer trek.
The starting point, Covilhã, is located on the edge of the park and is accessible by train from Lisbon and Porto.
Practical Hiking Tips for Serra da Estrela
Best app: Komoot and AllTrails have the most comprehensive route maps for the Serra da Estrela, including elevation profiles and user reviews.
Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots are a must. The terrain is rocky and can be slippery after rain. On higher trails, a waterproof jacket is also recommended.
Best time of year: spring (April–June) and fall (September–November) for most routes. In the summer, the popular spots get crowded; in the winter, snow is possible on higher routes.
Water: Always bring enough with you. Water fountains are scarce outside the villages.
Cycling in the Serra da Estrela
The Serra da Estrela is one of Portugal’s most challenging—and at the same time most rewarding—cycling destinations. The area offers a wide variety of routes: from technical mountain bike trails through rugged mountain slopes to winding scenic roads that have been attracting road cyclists for decades. And more recently, there’s a growing selection of e-bike routes for those who want to explore the landscape without wearing out their legs.
Cycling: The Ascent of Torre
Torre is a classic cycling climb and has been part of the Tour of Portugal (Volta a Portugal) for decades. There are four routes to the summit, with those from Covilhã and Seia being the most popular. The route from Unhais da Serra is the toughest: a 20.8-kilometer climb with an average gradient of 6.4%. It’s a real challenge, but the view from the top will make it all worth it.
Mountain Biking: From Leisurely to Technical
The mountain biking network in and around the park is extensive. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced rider, there’s always a route that’s right for you:
Vale do Rossim: an accessible route along the mountain lake, with few technically challenging sections. Ideal as a first introduction to mountain biking in the Serra.
Loriga to Manteigas: a spectacular descent through the glacial valley with views of the Zêzere. Requires some technical skill due to the rugged terrain.
GR33 Great Zêzer Route (section): a longer hike through the heart of the park, along riverbanks, past granite formations, and through small mountain villages.
Vale Glaciar do Zêzere: a mix of technical climbs and panoramic descents toward the glacial lake. For experienced mountain bikers.
E-bike: Explore the park at your own pace
The combination of elevation changes and vast open spaces makes the Serra da Estrela perfect for e-biking. With an e-mountain bike, you can ride routes that you wouldn’t—or could hardly—tackle on a regular bike, and reach places that aren’t accessible by car.
Local provider Estrela E-bike (Manteigas) offers more than ten routes with a low technical difficulty level and also organizes multi-day programs lasting two to three days. Routes can be ridden independently or with a guide, and are loaded onto a GPS device. The boutique hotel Pena D’Água in Covilhã also rents out e-bikes that allow you to ride directly into the park.
Practical Cycling Tips
Plan a route: Komoot offers an extensive collection of cycling routes for the Serra da Estrela, including detailed information on road surfaces and elevation profiles.
Rentals: Estrela E-bike (Manteigas) for e-bike tours and rentals; Pena D’Água (Covihlã) for daily e-bike rentals.
Base: Manteigas for MTB and e-bike rides; Covihlã for road cycling toward Torre.
Watch out for traffic: the N339 (the road up to Torre) gets busy with cars on weekends during the summer.
When are you going? The Serra da Estrela by season
The Serra da Estrela is worth visiting all year round, but each season has its own unique character. Here’s what you can expect:
Spring: April through June
Spring is the best season for hikers and cyclists who want to experience the Serra da Estrela at a leisurely pace and at its most beautiful. The slopes are covered with blooming heather, wild daffodils, and gentians. It’s still cool at higher elevations, but the sun shines for a long time. Few tourists, all hiking trails open—perfect hiking weather.
Summer: July and August
Warm and sunny, but also the busiest season at the popular spots. Torre can get very crowded on summer weekends. The river beaches, such as Praia Fluvial de Loriga, are at their best and attract many day-trippers. It’s best to go for a walk early in the morning or choose the lesser-known trails. Stay overnight in the park itself: the crowds thin out in the evening, and the atmosphere changes completely.
Fall: September through November
Fall is perhaps the most spectacular season. The beech and oak forests slowly change color from green to gold, ochre, and red. The Rota das Faias is truly breathtaking in October. The weather is cooler, making it ideal for longer hikes. It’s the favorite season for photographers and nature lovers.
Winter: December through March
Snow in Portugal? You’ll find it here. The Serra da Estrela is the best place on the Portuguese mainland for winter sports enthusiasts. Around Torre and Penhas da Saúde, you have a chance of snow from December through February. Enjoy snowshoeing and skiing on the modest ski slope. The landscape is serene, quiet, and awe-inspiring. Not all hiking trails are accessible, but the atmosphere is unparalleled.
Local Flavors: Dining in the Serra da Estrela
A visit to the Serra da Estrela isn’t complete without sampling the local cuisine. The region is home to some of the most highly acclaimed products in all of Portugal.
Serra da Estrela cheese (Queijo Serra da Estrela DOP). Portugal’s most famous cheese. Creamy, soft, and melt-in-your-mouth on the inside; it’s cut with a spoon. Made from the milk of local Bordaleira sheep, exclusively during the months of November through April. A cheese tasting in Celorico da Beira is an absolute must.
Lamb from the mountains. The lamb that grazes on the high plateaus of the Serra makes the meat exceptionally tender and flavorful. Whether roasted or in a stew, it’s always seasoned with local herbs.
Local wine. The Beiras region surrounding the Serra da Estrela produces full-bodied, little-known wines that pair perfectly with the region’s cheeses and meats.
Migas serranas. A mountain-style bread dish fried with garlic, cabbage, and sausage. A flavor you’ll want to enjoy again and again.
Practical Information: How do you get there, and where can you stay?
Accessibility
The Serra da Estrela is located in central Portugal and is easily accessible from the major cities. It’s about a 3-hour drive from Lisbon and 2.5 hours from Porto. By train, you can take IC connections to Covilhã, Guarda, or Celorico da Beira (towns on the edge of the park). From the station, you can take a taxi or local bus further into the park. A car offers the most freedom, especially if you want to visit multiple places.
Bases of operations
The best base for hikers and mountain bikers is Manteigas: a small village in the heart of the park, right next to the most beautiful trailheads. If you’d prefer a larger town as your base, with more amenities, restaurants, and good train service, choose Covilhã. Located 17 kilometers from the park, the town offers everything you need for a comfortable home base.

Is the Serra da Estrela suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. The park offers trails for all skill levels, ranging from short, one-hour walks along mountain lakes to multi-day hikes. With an e-bike, even cycling routes with significant elevation changes are accessible to people who aren’t in top shape.
How do you get to the Serra da Estrela without a car?

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.

Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
