Lombardy is Italy’s most diverse region. In the north lie the Central Alps with glaciers and four-thousand-meter peaks; in the south, the vast Po Plain; and in between, a world of lakes, valleys, and mountain ranges that are concentrated together in a way found nowhere else. Virtually all of northern Italy’s major lakes are located in Lombardy, from Lake Garda in the east to Lake Maggiore in the west. And nestled between them are lesser-known valleys whose landscapes are just as stunning, yet offer a sense of tranquility and authenticity that the major lakes have long since lost.
In the northeast lies the Stelvio National Park, Italy’s largest national park. There you’ll find glaciers, spectacular hairpin turns, and wildlife including deer, chamois, ibex, marmots, foxes, and eagles. The Orobic Alps above Bergamo are greener and more accessible: a mountainous landscape with lakes, meadows, and rocky peaks, crisscrossed by hiking trails offering breathtaking panoramic views. And the Valle Camonica is home to the largest concentration of rock art in Europe: dating from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the heart of the mountain landscape.
Lombardy is best enjoyed outside of the summer crowds. In the spring, the lake shores are in bloom; in the fall, the mountain forests turn colorful.
Lombardy offers hikers an almost overwhelming range of options. Along the lakes, historic coastal trails such as the Sentiero del Viandante run along Lake Como; a route of about 68 kilometers along former mule trails from Abbadia Lariana to the northern shore. If you’re looking to go higher, head to the Orobic Alps: the multi-day hut-to-hut hike, the Sentiero delle Orobie Occidentale, takes you through the Brembana Valley in six days, with three to eight hours of hiking each day and elevation gains of up to 1,600 meters.
In the northeast, the Stelvio National Park awaits with hikes through coniferous and larch forests, past glacial lakes, and up to the Stelvio Pass—at 2,758 meters, the second-highest paved mountain pass in the Alps. Nature Travel Lab also offers an eight-day hiking tour of Lake Como and Lake Lugano: along beautiful and sometimes ancient Roman mountain trails above Lake Como and Lake Lugano, on the border between Italy and Switzerland, with routes ranging from easy to challenging.
Spring and early fall are the ideal seasons: the temperatures are pleasant, the air is clear, and the Alps are at their most beautiful.
Lombardy offers a base for every type of nature traveler. Nature Travel Lab selects unique accommodations, each of which showcases a different facet of the region.
Located on Lake Como, B&B Villa Le Ortensie is situated in the medieval mountain village of Molina: six tastefully decorated rooms in a historic villa, accessible only on foot, with a garden full of hydrangeas and a stunning view of the lake. Hostess Silvia and her team know the best hiking trails and hidden gems in the area.

We select the nicest accommodations with all a focus on sustainability policies. Think luxury Treehouses in the middle of nature or a boutique hotel in the countryside. Sustainability categories range from organic cuisine and mindfull focus to waste separation and zero-waist policy.
The accommodations all have something unique and of course a location in or near nature. Spending the night in nature does not always mean sleeping in a tent. Find special and luxurious nature stays for your active vacation or just for your slow travel experience.
The overnight focus on sustainability policy gives attention to comfort and quality.
They often use their own vegetable garden or local cuisine. Much attention is paid to the quality of the accommodation, the environment and the guest.
