Nature in Veneto
Veneto is more than just Venice. As you drive into the hinterland, you’ll discover a region that stretches from the coastal lagoons to the jagged peaks of the Dolomites in the north—all within a single province. The landscape ranges from rolling vineyard hills and thermal springs to unspoiled mountain areas where, even in high season, you’ll hardly encounter another hiker.
To the north lie the Dolomiti Bellunesi and Dolomiti di Comelico: a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring dramatic limestone rock towers, alpine meadows, and the phenomenon of “enrosadira,” in which the rock faces glow pink and red at sunset. In the south, the Colli Euganei—a volcanic hilly landscape near Padua—offer a completely different kind of natural beauty: thermal springs, vineyards, medieval villages, and quiet hiking trails through the regional park. And then there’s Lake Garda (officially also partly in Veneto) with its Mediterranean atmosphere, olive groves, and a special microclimate that makes the region unique in Northern Italy. Three completely different landscapes, all within a few hours’ drive of each other.
Hiking in Veneto
The Veneto countryside is a great place to hike if you prefer to take the path that doesn’t appear on every Instagram feed. Yes, the Dolomites are world-famous, but the part that lies in Veneto attracts significantly fewer visitors than the crowded areas near Trentino or South Tyrol.
In the north, starting from Comelico Superiore, you’re just a few kilometers from the Tre Cime di Lavaredo—one of the most iconic hikes in the Dolomites. At the same time, this area offers quieter routes through forests and mountain meadows that attract very few visitors. Further south, the Dolomiti Bellunesi provide starting points like Valbelluna for day hikes past medieval churches and mountain streams. In the Colli Euganei, there are countless biking and hiking trails for mountain bikers, gravel bikers, and hikers of all skill levels, with views of the park’s rolling hills. Spring and fall are the ideal seasons for exploring the hinterland: the trails are less crowded, the colors are more intense, and the light is perfect for photography.
