Nature in AlentejoThe landscape is characterized by the montado: rolling plains dotted with cork and holm oaks, to which Portugal owes its status as the world’s largest producer of cork. In the northeast, the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede delights visitors with its green hills and medieval mountain villages such as Marvão and Castelo de Vide.Surrounding the Alqueva Reservoir—the largest artificial lake in Western Europe—lies one of the world’s first certified Dark Sky reserves. And on the western side, the rugged Costa Vicentina crashes against the cliffs: pristine beaches where you’ll still be virtually alone in May.

Hiking in AlentejoThe best-known route is the Rota Vicentina. The inland Historical Way winds through cork oak forests and quiet villages; the spectacular Fishermen's Trail follows the rugged Atlantic coastline over cliffs and dunes, making it one of the most beautiful coastal hikes in Europe.Inland, the trails around São Mamede offer peaceful walks with sweeping views. The best time to visit is outside of summer—from September through June—when temperatures are pleasant and the plains turn green or golden.

Where to Stay in AlentejoA typical feature of the Alentejo is the monte: a low, white country house in the middle of the plain. We select restored montes, herdades, and eco-lodges that exude peace and space, often run by people who know the region inside and out.You book direct with the owner—no middleman, no commission. That way, you get the full story and the best price.
