8-Day Cycling Tour: Dolomites – Trieste (Italy, Austria, Slovenia)

8-day bike tour from the Dolomites to Trieste: three countries, one epic finish by the sea

Imagine this: you’re slowly winding your way down from the Dolomites toward wide valleys, crossing borders along the way as if it were nothing, and taking a fairy-tale break at the Lake Bled; and ending up on the Adriatic coast in Trieste, overlooking the Gulf of Trieste.

This 8-day route is the kind of trip where you feel like you’re cycling into a “new chapter” every day. Cycle through 3 countries in a week.

In this article, I’ll outline the route for you in an inspiring and practical way. You can book it through our local partner (including GPX routes, luggage transport, and accommodations), but of course you can also arrange everything yourself. Whichever suits your travel style best.

Bike Tour: The Dolomites – Trieste

Why this route is such a pleasure to bike

What I really like about this route is that it’s a mix of comfortable bike paths and quiet back roads. The first few days often feel “flowy” (with pleasant descents through valleys), while the last two stages are hillier. Just enough to keep things exciting, without turning it into a climbing race right away. And with an e-bike, you can make the ride even more relaxed.

Day-by-Day Itinerary (8 Days) Cycling Tour: Dolomites – Trieste

Day 1: Arrival in Alta Pusteria (Dobbiaco/Toblach/Villabassa/Niederdorf) or Sillian

You’ll arrive at your hotel on your own. There is free (unattended) parking near the hotel.

Day 2: From Alta Pusteria/Sillian to Oberdrauburg/Kötschach Mauthen

Approx. 70–75 km from Alta Pusteria / approx. 60–65 km from Sillian
From the Sella di Dobbiaco (Toblacher Sattel)—the watershed between the Drava and Rienza rivers—you begin a gradual descent. You’ll cross the border into Austria and follow the Drava River to Lienz, the “sunny city” of East Tyrol. From there, continue on to Oberdrauburg, a Carinthian village with churches, castles, and the Dolomites in the background.

Day 3: From Oberdrauburg/Kötschach Mauthen to Feistritz/Tarvis

Transfer Gailberg Pass: approx. 7 km / +350 m – Then approx. 65 km cycling
After the transfer, you set off in a relaxed manner towards Kötschach-Mauthen. You follow the Gailtal cycle path through forests, past lakes, and beneath the peaks of the Carnic Alps towards Hermagor and Lake Pressegger (one of the warmest lakes in Austria). You finish in Feistritz an der Gail, a village strongly committed to sustainable tourism .

Day 4: From Feistritz/Tarvisio to Bled

Approx. 55–65 km
You’ll cycle toward the Italian border, with a stop in Tarvisio, and then enter Slovenia. Along the way, you’ll see the Kranjska Gora (ski) resort and the lush Slovenian countryside. And then: Bled. Perfect for a long break by the lake, with mountains reflected in the water.

Alternative option: You can plan a second night in Bled and skip the Bled–Cividale leg (see the alternative below).

Cividale del Friuli

Day 5: From Bled to Cividale del Friuli

Train transfer to Most na Soči—followed by a roughly 50 km bike ride
Take the train to Most na Soči (Ponte sull’Isonzo) in the Soča/Isonzo Valley: prehistoric roots and an outdoor hotspot (canoeing, kayaking, adventure).
You’ll continue cycling to Kobarid/Caporetto (known for the Battle of Caporetto in October 1917; museum visit possible).
Back in Italy, you’ll descend through the Natisone valleys toward Cividale del Friuli: a city shaped by a mix of cultures (Celtic, Roman, Lombard, Frankish, Germanic, and Venetian).

Day 6: From Cividale del Friuli to Gradisca d’Isonzo

35 km or the longer route via Udine: approx. 65 km
Today you’ll cycle into the heart of the wine region: Collio/Colli Friulani. Ideal if you’d like to stop at a winery along the way for a tasting of local wines.
After passing through the hills around Gorizia, you’ll arrive in Gradisca d’Isonzo, a fortified town on the river that was contested for centuries between Austria and Venice—a history reflected in its cuisine.

Trieste - Miramar Castle

Day 7: From Gradisca d’Isonzo to Trieste

Approx. 40 km
You’ll climb toward the Karst (Carso), a landscape bearing traces of World War I, and continue on to the Adriatic Sea. On the Gulf of Trieste stands Miramare Castle: a perfect stop to get a feel for Trieste and its Habsburg history.
You’ll end up in Trieste at the famous square by the sea. The historic cafés exuded (and still exude) that typical Central European atmosphere, with literary figures such as Italo Svevo, James Joyce, and Umberto Saba woven into the city’s history.

Day 8 – Trieste, departure

Individual departure or the option to extend your stay.

Option: 2 nights in Bled (instead of 1 night in Bled + 1 night in Cividale)

Day 5: Bled (rest day)

A full day at the lake: hiking, scenic overlooks, relaxing. Bled is one of those places where doing nothing is actually an activity in itself.

Day 6: From Bled via Gorizia to Gradisca d’Isonzo

Train transfer to Most na Soči. Then, a bike ride of about 40 km
You’ll cycle along the river toward Gorizia and through the vineyards of the Collio region to Gradisca d’Isonzo.
