Self-guided, fully taken care of by a local specialist: Fishermen’s Trail from Cercal to Odeceixe
On day five you board a boat to cross the mouth of the Mira River. No bridge, no timetabled ferry service; a local boatman rows you across, where the trail simply continues towards Almograve. It’s one of those moments you couldn’t have planned for yourself, and that’s exactly why it pays to do this hike in an organized way.
The Fishermen’s Trail – the Fishermen’s Trail, the coastal variant of the Rota Vicentina – takes you along the best preserved wild coast in Europe: striped cliffs, deserted sandy beaches and quiet fishing villages. In this 8-day hiking trip Rota Vicentina, you’ll hike the northern section, from Cercal do Alentejo to Odeceixe, with a local specialist who will transport your luggage, arrange your hotels and direct you on the right path with a GPS app. You hike at your own pace; the logistics are taken care of.

First, want to know exactly what the Rota Vicentina is, what routes there are and when is the best time to go? Then read our background article “Why hike the Rota Vicentina?”. This article is about the organized trip: what you get, what it costs and who it works for.
A self-guided hiking tripis not a guided group trip. You walk independently, at your own pace, with whomever you want. What the local specialist does for you is take away everything around it: mapping out the route, getting your luggage from hotel to hotel, booking overnight accommodations in the right places along the trail and giving you a navigation app with GPS tracks and stage descriptions. On day 1 or 2, you’ll have a briefing so you leave well prepared.
You notice the difference from booking yourself mostly in the details. The Fishermans trail often runs far from the villages where you sleep, so without luggage transport you lug everything through loose sand. The Mira crossing you have to arrange on the spot. And accommodations along this coast are limited and quickly booked up in season. A local partner knows the stretches, the skippers and the worthy addresses. AND is accessible if something changes along the way.

The route runs through the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, the best preserved stretch of Atlantic coast in Europe, stretching over 100 kilometers from Porto Covo to the Algarve. It is one of the most species-rich nature reserves in Portugal, with more than 750 plant species and numerous sea birds.
The most extraordinary thing you see when you look up at the rock pillars in the sea: here the white stork on the sea cliffs; a behavior you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Add the smell of salts and thyme, the sound of the surf deep below you, and beaches where you are often alone in the early and late season, and you understand why this path is so beloved by nature lovers.
Eight days, seven nights, five hiking stages and a total of 91.1 kilometers. From north to south, the recommended direction. In between, a free day in Vila Nova de Milfontes to recover or explore the town.

Accommodations are in simple, comfortable 2/3-star hotels and guesthouses in the fishing villages along the route(or similar).
A fair side note: these are practical, well-located addresses chosen for their location on the trail; not small-scale boutique stays with unique ambiance as we highlight in other destinations. For a multi-day hike, this is actually nice: you sleep where the stage ends, close to the beach and food.

On a self-guided trip, you hike independently at your own pace, without a guide. The local specialist will arrange the route, hotels, luggage transport and a GPS app; on day 1 or 2 you will receive a briefing. On an escorted trip, a guide walks with you the entire trip.
It is a moderately tough route. The stages run up to more than 20 kilometers on often sandy trails, with climbs along the cliffs. A reasonable basic fitness level and good walking shoes are sufficient; technical experience is not necessary.
In spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October). Then it is pleasant walking weather and the coast is in bloom. In July and August it is hot, there is little shade and it is busier; there are no departures in August.
Yes. Your luggage goes from hotel to hotel each day (one bag per person, up to 15 kg), so you only have to carry a day backpack.
