Mistral, a sustainable campground in the Valle Maira in Piedmont

Camping Mistral is located in the heart of the unspoiled nature of Valle Maira in Piedmont, northern Italy. It is a place where active explorers and vacationers, those seeking peace and quiet, and adventurers all come together. Here, you can experience the beauty of the valley and its unspoiled nature in a sustainable way.

Sustainable small campground

The campground opened in 2025 and features:

  • 12 tent sites
  • 6 RV sites
  • 3 permanent tents (13 m² each)

The terrain is mostly flat, consisting of grassy and wooded areas, and offers views of the mountains.

The campground has a bar, which is open during the day and also has a small shop selling local products. Locanda Mistral is a 15-minute drive away and has a restaurant.

The campground offers a morning bread service (baked by Manuela). You can also have breakfast at Locanda Mistral if you’d like. There’s also a central barbecue area, a sink for washing dishes, a playground for children, and picnic tables.

The restroom building is wheelchair accessible and has 7 toilets and 4 showers. Hot water is free. Overnight rates are low. Admission for children is free, and day visitors can also use the picnic areas at the campground for free.

Sustainability is a top priority; read more about this below. The campground also offers a bread delivery service for breakfast and a restroom facility.

In a unique nature reserve

Camping Mistral borders the special nature conservation area of the Alpi Marittime National Park. The park is designated as a Natura 2000 site and a “ZPS” (Zona di Protezione Speciale). The area has been granted this special status due to its rare endemic pine trees, the unique “Rocca Provenzale,” and the calcareous aquatic plants in the upper reaches of the Maira River. The park features approximately 400 kilometers of hiking trails, more than 80 lakes, numerous animal species, and unique plants.

Your hosts, Manuela and Renato, have grown to love the area and want to give you, as their guest, sustainable access to this unique piece of nature. They know the area like no one else.

In addition, Manuela is the head chef at the nearby Locanda Mistral, and Renato is a certified mountain guide. Here you can find more information about the Valle Maira.

A Strong Sense of Sustainability

Social Sustainability

At Camping Mistral, people come first: guests, staff, and partners. They respect the unique cultural heritage of Valle Maira, support local cultural organizations, train their staff, and offer educational programs that introduce guests to the rich history of the valley and the region. As a guest, you can actively participate in the valley’s sustainability projects.

Local partners

Manuela and Renato shop at sustainable, local stores, artisanal farms, and businesses to strengthen the regional economy and preserve cultural diversity. They also foster a fair and inclusive community at Camping Mistral.

They are eager to help you connect with local residents and participate in local events. Five percent of the profits are invested in local community projects and environmental protection measures.

Environment

At the end of the season, the campground is cleaned up and everything is taken down. They always leave the protected area in better condition than they found it. For all managed facilities and equipment, they use environmentally friendly building materials and renewable energy sources. Waste is sorted and recycled.

Biodiversity

Camping Mistral protects the local flora and fauna by preserving natural habitats and supporting nature conservation projects in the park. As a guest, you are welcome to participate in these initiatives.

Sustainable Transportation

To protect the environment and preserve the unique atmosphere of nature, the number of vehicles allowed in the area and the number of parking spaces are limited. This allows you to truly enjoy the unique landscape and relax in harmony with nature.

The campground encourages the use of eco-friendly modes of transportation, such as bicycles, walking, public transportation, and electric vehicles. They have a charging station for electric cars at their partner organization, Locanda Mistral. You can charge e-bikes at the campground.

During the high season (June through August), a shuttle service runs from the Saretto parking lot to the campground. This parking lot is free. It’s about a 15-minute walk. The campground itself has a limited number of parking spaces (for a fee). People with disabilities and those with a parking permit can access the campground by car (by reservation).
