Day-by-Day Itinerary: Douro International & Côa Valley

Day 1: Arrival in Porto

Welcome to Porto! An airport transfer will take you to your charming hotel in the city. Upon check-in, you’ll receive your welcome package, which includes train tickets, a GPS route guide, and all the practical information you need. Depending on your arrival time, you can explore the historic city center or visit the Port wine cellars across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Douro Valley - Hiking

Day 2: Train ride to the Douro International Natural Park

You’ll travel by train along the Douro River to Pocinho. Along the way, you’ll pass through the Alto Douro vineyards (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the route gradually transitions into more rugged countryside.

Spend the night in a restored farmhouse in the Douro International Natural Park, where you’ll enjoy breakfast and dinner prepared with the farm’s own olives, almonds, and local specialties.

Day 3: From Mazouco to Freixo de Espada à Cinta in the Douro International Park

16.8 km | Elevation gain: +268 m | Elevation loss: -458 m

A walk through the countryside along the Douro—with stunning views of the Douro River and Spain on the other side, featuring steep cliffs, also known as the “Grand Canyon” of the Iberian Peninsula.

This rugged and rocky nature reserve is a refuge for endangered bird species such as the vulture and the griffon vulture.

Discover rock carvings by the river that are about 10,000 years old.

The final stop is the Manueline (Portuguese Gothic) village of Freixo de Espada à Cinta, with its beautiful church entrance. You’ll walk back past vineyards and olive groves to your farmhouse.

Day 4: From Ribeira do Mosteiro to Freixo

Hiking along the ancient Roman road “Calçada de Alpajares,” winding past cliffs with 500 million years of history.

Douro International Park - Trail

Enjoy nature and culture; visit the village of Poiares, where you can see the region’s typical crops and learn more about traditional farming methods. You’ll return to the farm for one more night for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: From Barca d’Alva to Vilar de Amargo

15.2 km | elevation gain +635 m | -154 m

On the way to Barca D’Alva, you can enjoy the fantastic views of the Douro and Arribes del Duero International Nature Parks, with the vast plains of Castelo e Leon and the impressive Saucelle Dam.

Hike through vineyards, olive groves, and grain fields to Vilar de Amargo, once a workers’ trail. You’ll be staying in Vilar de Amargo for the next two nights. Overnight stay in a charming cottage.

Day 6: From Vilar de Amargo to Castelo Melhor

16.1 km | elevation gain +148 m | elevation loss -387 m

Today you’ll hike through sheep pastures and ancient villages. Visit Algodres (pre-Roman), then continue on to Almendra (dating back to the Iron Age), an important town in the 15th and 16th centuries. From there, head to Castelo Melhor, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards.

In the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a tasting of local cheese and regional products and visit a prehistoric “rock art” site on the Côa River—approximately 25,000 years old.

Day 7: From Castelo Melhor to the Côa Museum

12.5 km | elevation gain +351 m | elevation loss -423 m

The final hike through the granite landscape transitions into schist: the “canvas” of ancient rock art.

The final leg ends at the Côa Museum. You can take your time exploring the collection and, if you’d like, have lunch at the museum restaurant; they offer an extensive menu featuring both traditional and modern Portuguese dishes.

End your trip in the picturesque, medieval town of Torre do Moncorvo.

Day 8: Back to Porto

A short transfer will take you back to the Pocinho train station, and then you’ll enjoy the scenic train ride back to Porto. You can optionally stay an extra night and, if you’d like, book a guided hike (for an additional fee).
