Hiking in the Catalan Pyrenees: A 7-Day Trek Through Villages, Nature, and Gastronomy

Catalan Pyrenees: Hiking Through the Mountains, Villages, Nature, and Gastronomy

This hiking tour through the Catalan Pyrenees takes you through beech and oak forests, along centuries-old shepherds’ trails, picturesque mountain villages with Romanesque churches, and at the end of each day’s hike, a restaurant that serves the region’s finest seasonal produce.

This 7-day hiking tour is an independent hiking trip that you can book through our local specialist. Accommodations, itineraries, and luggage transport are included.

Why the Catalan Pyrenees?

The Catalan Pyrenees form the entire northern border between Catalonia and France and are one of the best-preserved mountain regions in Western Europe. The landscape is impressively diverse: dense deciduous forests gradually give way to alpine meadows and rocky mountain peaks, while winding rivers bring the valleys to life.

In addition to its spectacular natural beauty, the region is steeped in a rich cultural history—from Romanesque monasteries and medieval bridges to lively village markets and centuries-old festival traditions.

If you’re looking for more than just racking up kilometers, this route offers a unique combination of nature, authenticity, and a chance to slow down. The terrain is mostly mountainous, with sections of loose rocks and shaded forest trails, but remains easily accessible to hikers in reasonably good physical condition. The elevation changes are moderate, though some climbs can be challenging.

A bird’s-eye view of the route: from Camprodon to Ribes de Freser

The hike connects five picturesque Pyrenean villages over six days of hiking:

  • Molló
  • Camprodon
  • Set Cases
  • Llanars
  • Ribes de Freser

Together, they form a series of authentic locations with well-preserved traditional architecture, each with its own story. Luggage transport between the hotels is included, so you can set out each day without a care in the world.

Day by Day: The Program

Day 1: Arrival in Molló

Your journey begins in Molló, a traditional mountain village that sets the tone for the entire week. The impressive 12th-century church, with its tall, slender bell tower—typical of Catalan church architecture—dominates the village skyline. The surrounding area is a treasure trove of flora and fauna and immediately invites you to explore.

Overnight stay at Hotel Calitxó, a traditional mountain hotel nestled in the natural beauty of the Camprodon Valley, with a restaurant that features seasonal produce from the region.

Day 2: From Camprodon to Molló (11 km)

After a transfer to Camprodon (the main town of the valley of the same name, located at the confluence of the Ter and Ritort rivers), you’ll take your first steps on the route. You’ll cross the iconic 12th-century bridge (renovated in the 14th century) and head back toward Molló along forest and shepherd’s trails.

Camprodon is also worth visiting for its cultural and historical attractions: the early 20th-century Art Nouveau district and the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere are definitely worth a visit. There’s a market on Sundays; in August, the charming “Musicians Without Solfège” festival takes place.

Day 3: From Molló to Setcases (12 km)

Setcases (literally “seven houses”) has grown quite a bit since then. Located near the French border in the Ripollès region of the Pyrenees, this is the village where the Ter River has its source. It’s a lively tourist destination year-round: in the warmer months for hikers and mountain bikers, and in the winter for skiers visiting the nearby Vallter 2000 ski resort.

Your accommodations for the next two nights: Hotel La Coma, at an elevation of 1,279 meters, featuring a heated pool, jacuzzi, and sauna.

Day 4: Free day in and around Setcases

A day to recharge—or, on the contrary, to test your limits. There’s a high-altitude loop hike starting from the ski resort, or you can opt for the most challenging route: an ascent of Mount Bastiments (2,881 m) via the Ull de Ter mountain hut. This long day hike, lasting about seven and a half hours, rewards the more fit hiker with spectacular panoramic views of the Pyrenees.

Day 5: From Setcases to Llanars (11 km)

Llanars is a quiet little town in the Camprodon Valley, near Camprodon. The route there winds through varied trails across the Pyrenean landscape. If you want to see more, you can take a detour via Sant Joan de les Abadesses (which features an impressive 5th-century Romanesque monastery).

We’ll be staying at Hotel Grèvol Spa & Wellness, which has a great restaurant and a full-service wellness center—ideal after a day of climbing up and down.

Day 6: From Llanars to Ribes de Freser (23 km)

The longest leg of the trip leads to Ribes de Freser: an old spa town at the confluence of three rivers, known for its healing waters and its lively market. It is also the starting point for the legendary cog railway to Vall de Núria.

You’ll be staying at Petits Caçadors, an eco-friendly mountain hotel that combines tradition with a touch of avant-garde, complete with an outdoor hotspot, a terrace, and the mysterious “Sala de la Lluna” (Moon Room).

Vall de Nuria - Train

Highly recommended: the cogwheel railway to Vall de Núria

If you’re staying an extra night in Ribes de Freser, you absolutely must not miss the train ride to the Vall de Núria. The railway line opened in 1931 and winds through spectacular mountain scenery to an elevation of 2,000 meters. At the top of the mountain, you’ll find a monastery dedicated to the Virgin of Núria, patron saint of the Pyrenean shepherds, as well as various hiking trails set against an impressive alpine backdrop. It’s a journey that nourishes both the soul and the eyes.
