In the mood for a weekend getaway, but would rather not fly? Fortunately, these days you can travel quickly, comfortably, and sustainably by train to top cities like Paris and Berlin. In this article, I’ll share my tips for an eco-friendly city trip by train, including practical information, ticket prices, and the best places to book.

Train travel are not only comfortable and relaxing, they also emit far less CO₂ than air travel. Plus, you often arrive right in the heart of the city—no hassle with airports located outside the city. This makes it ideal if you want to travel sustainably and enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Berlin is easily accessible by train, whether you choose a comfortable day trip or the charm of the overnight train.
Are you up for a real adventure? Then hop on the European Sleeperin Amsterdam, a night train that runs to Berlin three times a week.
You’ll save on a night’s stay at a hotel and arrive in the city early. Perfect for diving right into the city.
Prefer to travel during the day? There’s a direct train from Amsterdam to Berlin that leaves almost every two hours until around 4:00 p.m.
Book your ticket early, because the best rates are limited.

With the Eurostar (formerly Thalys), you can travel from the Netherlands to Paris in no time. Several trains depart daily from Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
Train tickets to Paris are cheapest if you book at least two to three months in advance. Prices can rise quickly, especially on weekends or around holidays.

A good train trip starts with the right preparation. Consider the following:
| Destination | Travel time | Starting price | Train | Book through |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paris | 3 hours 20 min | €35 | Eurostar | NSInternational.nl |
| Berlin (day) | 6 hours | €38 | Intercity | NSInternational.nl |
| Berlin (night) | 8 hours | €49 | European Sleeper | NSInternational.nl |
