What Is Slow Travel? (Meaning, Examples, and 15 Tips for a Sustainable Vacation)
Slow travel means traveling slowly and mindfully: you stay in one place longer, move around less, and opt more often for nature, local experiences, and a leisurely pace instead of “checking everything off the list.” The result is usually simple: more peace of mind, more authentic moments, and often a smaller environmental footprint.
Slow travel in one sentence
Travel less, stay longer, experience more deeply.
In a nutshell
Really getting to know one region (instead of five highlights in six days)
Travel by land whenever possible (train/bus/bike)
Eat Local & Shop Local
Leave some room and time in your schedule (so your trip really feels like a vacation)
Slow travel: what it is (and what it isn’t)
Slow travel is not a competition to see “who travels the slowest,” nor does it necessarily mean “never flying again.” Above all, it’s a way of traveling in which you consciously choose quality over quantity. Relaxation and enjoying your surroundings and the scenery of your destination are the top priorities.
Slow travel is, in fact:
Choose a base (or up to two) and explore from there
spending time in nature, hiking, biking, swimming, reading, visiting the local market
Slow down and travel at the pace of the place (and not just according to your to-do list)
Slow travel is not:
Drive 3–5 hours every day to see everything
a packed schedule that leaves you even more tired after your vacation
punishing yourself by aiming for “perfect sustainability” (it’s about making better choices, not about perfection)
And the best tip for slow travel? Don’t fall into the social media trap
Okay, I’m in on this too, but I really try to showcase the lesser-known spots on my Instagram channel. Don’t just follow the crowd for the same old snapshots of the highlights—take a detour. Just a short distance from the famous highlights, you’ll often find unique and peaceful spots for your one-of-a-kind photo—not just another one in a long line….
The Essence of Slow Travel: 7 Principles That Always Work
Choose a short route One region is often enough to explore for a week (or two).
Stay longer at each location Rule of thumb: at least 3 nights per location, preferably 5 to 7.
Travel by land whenever possible Trains and buses often put you in “slow mode” before you even arrive.
Make nature your main attraction Hikes, water, forests, mountains: free, timeless, and truly relaxing.
Eat local and seasonal You also get to know a place through its market, bakery, small-scale winemaker, or organic/locally sourced cuisine.
Leave room for chance La dolce vita: the most beautiful terrace, that one path along the river, the village festival—you don’t plan these things; you just stumble upon them.
Spend your money where it benefits the local community Small-scale accommodations and local businesses help keep a destination vibrant.
(That “supporting local businesses” is also exactly why Nature Travel Lab prefers to refer you to places where you can book directly with the owner.)
Is slow travel also more sustainable?
That’s often the case, especially because you travel less and are more likely to choose transportation with lower emissions.
1. Transportation makes the biggest difference
Milieu Centraal states that flying can have a 10- to 15-times greater environmental impact than the same trip by train (especially for shorter distances). The IEA also notes that rail emissions per passenger-kilometer are, on average, about one-fifth those of flying.
2. Fewer travel days mean less hassle (and less impact)
Every day you travel costs energy: transportation, fresh towels, turning the AC on and off, and extra consumption along the way. Slow travel is often naturally simpler.
3. Traveling outside the peak season is often extra slow
Quieter trails, more connection, less pressure on nature and residents. And honestly: your vacation suddenly feels twice as spacious.
15 Practical Slow Travel Tips (You Can Start Using Today)
Make sure your schedule is intentionally flexible: that’s where Slow travel happens.
Choose one region and write down: Why do I want to be here?
Choose one base location (up to two for stays of 2 weeks or longer).
Plan for one rest day every three days (without feeling like you “have” to).
Cut 30% of your highlights (you won’t miss a thing, and you’ll save time).
Book a stay with character: small-scale, in or near nature.
Travel by land whenever possible: train, bus, or bike.
Plan one “anchor activity” (e.g., a hike, a kayaking trip, a yoga class, a workshop).
Eat locally once a day (at the market, bakery, or neighborhood restaurant).
A mini-retreat: hiking, sauna, going to bed early, turning off the screen
Slow travel and food: the quickest way to a great experience
I think this is underrated: when you eat what the region has to offer, your trip immediately feels more fulfilling. For example:
Breakfast from our own garden
bread from the village bakery
seasonal menus
Locally sourced ingredients from right around the corner
On Nature Travel Lab, you’ll increasingly find accommodations that are committed to sustainability (organic, locally sourced, vegetarian/vegan options).
Where does slow travel come from?
Slow travel is linked to the broader Slow Movement (slowing down). A well-known starting point is Slow Food, which emerged in Rome in 1986 as a reaction to fast-food culture. The core principles have remained the same: less rush, more quality, and greater attention to local identity.
A related movement is Cittaslow (Slow Cities), launched in 1999: a network of cities and municipalities committed to quality of life, local identity, and livability. There are hundreds of member cities and towns worldwide.
Frequently Asked Questions About Slow Travel
What does “Slow travel” mean?
Traveling slowly and mindfully: travel less, stay longer, experience things more deeply.
What is slow tourism?
“Langzaam toerisme” is the Dutch term for “Slow travel.” And it’s actually a better description than it seems. It’s not just about traveling slowly, but about traveling mindfully: fewer kilometers, more experiences. You choose one region, stay there longer, eat local food, get around on foot or by bike, and let the place sink in rather than just checking it off your list. In Europe, this fits perfectly with the way many destinations are best experienced: off-season, without rushing, and via the back roads.
How long should you stay in a place when practicing Slow travel?
There’s no minimum, but staying at least 3 nights per spot helps a lot.
What is slow travel in Europe?
Slow travel in Europe is easier than you think: the rail network connects countries without requiring you to fly, the lesser-known destinations are often just a stone’s throw from the crowds, and outside of peak season, you’ll have them practically to yourself. Slow travel in Europe isn’t a luxury—it’s a choice.
What will be the trend for slow travel in 2026?
Slow travel is clearly on the rise. According to the European Travel Commission, the percentage of travelers who consciously choose slow travel rose from 22% in 2025 to 26% in 2026. Relaxationis now the top reason for traveling: 56% of travelers choose their trip primarily to relax, and 37% specifically seek out nature for mental peace. Travelers are increasingly opting for fewer stops, longer stays of four to seven nights per location, and destinations off the beaten path. In short: Slow travel is no longer a niche; it’s simply the direction in which travel is heading.
What is a “slow” city trip?
A “slow city trip” is a city trip where you focus on a single city or neighborhood instead of visiting three cities in five days. Ideally, you’ll travel there by train, choose a neighborhood, wander around without a set plan, and discover where the locals have lunch. No checklist of must-sees—just room for whatever you happen to come across. You only really get to know cities like Ghent, Bologna, or Porto when you stay a few days longer than planned.
Is slow travel always more sustainable?
Not automatically. It becomes more sustainable, above all, if you travel less and make more conscious choices (regarding transportation and accommodations).
Is slow travel possible with children?
Absolutely. Children often thrive on rhythm, repetition, and having one comfortable, familiar place.
What is the “slowest” way to travel?
Traveling on foot and by bike is the slowest, and often the most immersive in nature.
Does slow travel always have to be without flying?
No. But if you do fly, Slow travel makes even more sense because you stay longer and avoid domestic flights.
Less rush, more nature
As far as I’m concerned, Slow travel is the most fulfilling way to travel: you don’t come home thinking, “I’ve seen it all,” but rather, “I’ve truly experienced it.” Start small: choose one region, stay longer, and give yourself some breathing room. Chances are you’ll come home with fewer “highlight” photos… and more memories.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
