Hiking in Tuscany: The Most Beautiful Trails from Elba to the Val d’Orcia
I really love hiking through the Tuscan countryside. Tuscany is a dream destination for hikers. This Italian region is known for its rolling hills, medieval villages, cypress-lined avenues, and vast vineyards. Tuscany is especially a beautiful hiking destination in the spring (April through June) and fall (September–October).
I’ll describe the most beautiful hiking trails in Tuscany, including practical tips and a handy map to help you plan your route.
Tuscany has more to offer than just beautiful views:
A diverse landscape: from the coast to the mountains, and from UNESCO-designated landscapes to mountainous nature parks, tranquil islands, and centuries-old pilgrimage routes.
Mild climate: ideal in the spring and fall (April–June, September–October); summers can be very hot, but it’s not as humid as we’re used to in the Netherlands.
Sustainable accommodations: from agriturismi to eco-hotels. Discover the most beautiful rural accommodations.
Culinary experience: I don’t need to explain this—the wines, olive oil, meat, pasta, and cheeses in Tuscany are all authentic and delicious.
Whether you choose a leisurely day hike or a challenging multi-day trek, Tuscany has a beautiful route for every type of hiker. Read about the most beautiful hiking trails and practical tips.
Hiking Along the Tuscan Coast: Ruins and the Sea
Hiking along the Tuscan coast means enjoying both nature and history. You’ll find this beautiful hiking trail on the southern coast of Tuscany:
Acropolis of Populonia & Buca delle Fate (7 km)
This route offers breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and takes you past Etruscan ruins.
Duration: 2 hours
Tip: Bring water and a camera; the views are phenomenal
Val d’Orcia: Hiking Through the Heart of Tuscany
The Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the classic Tuscan landscape of rolling hills, cypress-lined avenues, and ancient villages.
1. Cypress Trail near San Quirico d’Orcia (10 km)
An easily accessible route past the famous Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta and the iconic cypress trees of the Val d’Orcia.
2. Multi-day hiking trail (82 km)
Discover the Val d’Orcia in five days, from Pienza to Radicofani. Each leg of the journey offers unique views and historic sights.
Stages:
Day 1: Tour of Pienza
Day 2: Castiglione d’Orcia
Day 3: San Quirico d’Orcia
Day 4: Montalcino
Day 5: Radicofani (20 km)

The Via Francigena: A Pilgrimage Route Through Tuscany
The Via Francigena is one of Europe’s most famous pilgrimage routes. The Tuscan section, from Lucca to Siena, is one of the most beautiful stretches. You can hike this route on your own or opt for an organized hiking vacation with luggage transport.
This easy, short hike is about 4–6 km (depending on where you park) and takes about 1.5 hours to complete. You can park on Via dei Cipressi in Colle Val d’Elsa. The river has beautifully clear blue water, and you’ll pass a stunning waterfall—the Cascata del Diborrato—where you can swim.
Hiking on Monte Amiata
Choose from short forest walks or longer hikes of varying difficulty. Combine your hike with local cuisine. Monte Amiata offers a wide range of hiking options, from the peaks of Monte Labbro to trails through the surrounding villages. Read more about Monte Amiata, a beautiful slice of authentic Tuscany.
Tip: Explore the forests and enjoy the local cuisine in the villages.
Hiking on Elba: From Mountain Peaks to Coastal Trails
The island of Elba, off the coast of Tuscany, is a true paradise for nature lovers. Here, rugged mountain landscapes alternate with picturesque beaches. Two hiking trails you definitely shouldn’t miss:
1. Monte Capanne: the roof of Elba
Monte Capanne (1,019 m) is the highest mountain on Elba and offers a spectacular 360-degree view of the island. On clear days, you can even see Corsica in the distance.
Route options:
Take the cable car from Marciana (April–September).
Hike up on your own along well-marked trails. The hike takes about 2 to 3 hours.
Tip: Wear sturdy hiking shoes, as some sections are rocky and steep.
2. The Grande Traversata Elbana: a three- or four-day hike
The Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE) is one of Italy’s most beautiful multi-day hiking trails. This 70-kilometer hike crosses the island from east to west and takes you through both mountainous and coastal landscapes. It’s a fairly challenging hike that’s suitable for experienced hikers.
Stages:
Cavo → Porto Azzurro (8 hours). A challenging climb, but one rewarded with breathtaking views.
Porto Azzurro → Marina di Campo (8 hours). A varied landscape featuring forests and coastal trails.
Monte Capanne Summit Trail (6 hours). Views of the sea and surrounding islands.
Poggio → Pomonte (6 hours). Spectacular descents and charming villages.
Tip for the Grande Traversata Elbana organized tour:
Avoid the summer months because of the heat, and plan your accommodations in advance.
Apuan Alps: Mountains and Lakes Near Lucca
In the Apuan Alps Nature Park, north of Lucca, you’ll find impressive limestone mountains and tranquil mountain lakes. It’s the perfect place for an active day in nature.
1. Loop around Lago di Vagli (5.2 km)
A short and easy walk around Lago di Vagli, a reservoir with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Duration: 1.5 hours
Highlight: The Ponte Tibetano, a spectacular suspension bridge spanning the lake.
2. Monte Forato Loop (10 km)
A more challenging route with an elevation gain of 700 meters. You’ll hike through dense forests and eventually reach Monte Forato, a mountain featuring a natural stone arch.
Duration: 5 hours
Starting point: Fornovolasco, a picturesque village in the Apuan Alps.
Three-Island Hike: Elba, Gorgona, and Pianosa
Would you like to explore the Tuscan islands? Then this “three-island hike” is a unique experience. Each island has its own character, ranging from rugged natural landscapes to historic sites. It’s a perfect combination of nature, culture, and adventure.
Day 1: Gorgona (7 km)
Gorgona, the smallest inhabited island in the Tuscan Archipelago, can only be visited with a guide. With a maximum of 100 visitors per day, this island remains an unspoiled paradise. The hike takes you past historic ruins and offers stunning views of the sea.
Highlight: A visit to the ruins of old prisons and a walk through one of the most remote areas of Tuscany.
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Day 2: Elba
Elba is the largest and most diverse island in the Tuscan Archipelago. There are countless hiking trails, but one highly recommended route is the trail from Scagliari to the Enfola promontory. This hike offers a combination of coastal scenery and mountainous terrain with views of the clear blue sea.
Tip: Take a dip in one of the coves along the way and enjoy some fresh fish at a local restaurant.
Duration: 3 hours
Day 3: Pianosa
The island of Pianosa is a special place, with a daily visitor limit of 330 to protect its natural environment. The hiking trail passes by impressive Roman ruins and the remains of a former penal colony.
Duration: 2 hours
Highlight: The ruins of the Casa del Marquis and the Roman villa of Agrippa Postumus, who lived here in exile.
Tip: Combine your hike with some snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters around Pianosa.
Practical information: Reservations are required for Gorgona and Pianosa. Ferries depart from Livorno (for Gorgona) and Piombino (for Pianosa and Elba).

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
