This lush, mountainous island offers not only exotic beaches and picturesque villages, but also a wealth of nature reserves, caves, and historical sites. What’s more, it’s a friendly island with hospitable locals and delicious Greek cuisine.

  • Katavothres in Argostoli. A rare natural phenomenon: seawater flows into underwater openings and reaches the Melissani Cave, Sami, and Agia Efimia, 15 km away. In addition to the Melissani Cave, the Drogarati Cave is also worth a visit.
  • Castles and monasteries: The island has a rich history and is home to many castles and monasteries. There are also many archaeological finds, such as those from the ancient Sami people dating from the 5th to the 2nd century B.C.
  • Lake Karavomilos: of great geological and biological value. It features an underground network of caves and is home to many endemic species.
  • Nautical Museum in Fiskardo: run by a nonprofit organization whose goal is to promote awareness of marine life and environmental protection. The museum is located in Fiskardo’s former elementary school.
  • Dark Sky Park in Ainos: Kefalonia’s Dark Sky Park offers a breathtaking view of the night sky and various constellations. A truly unique experience.
  • Koutavos Lagoon in Argostoli: an important wetland, home to countless birds, fish, and other animal species, as well as unique flowers and plants. A beautiful place for a walk.
  • Potisti Waterfalls in Poros—the waterfalls of the Gradou Gorge, a beautiful place for hiking, though they sometimes dry up in the summer due to a lack of water.
  • Napier Garden in Argostoli: a beautiful park in the heart of Argostoli where you can take a stroll, even in the evening.
  • Argostoli is home to the world’s longest stone pedestrian bridge over the sea. You can walk or bike across the Bosset Bridge for nearly 700 meters without encountering any cars.
  • Carnival is celebrated in a big way in Kefalonia. It’s a great time to visit the island.

Hiking on Kefalonia

Mount Ainos National Park

The only national park on a Greek island! Mount Ainos (1,628 meters) offers beautiful hiking trails through dense spruce forests and spectacular views. Perfect for an active day in nature.

Fiskardo: Hiking along beaches and through the wilderness

This 11-kilometer route takes you through rugged natural scenery, hidden coves, and centuries-old olive trees. The starting point is the harbor of Fiskardo. The hike takes 3 to 4 hours and is suitable for moderate hikers.

Assos: Hike to the Venetian Fortress

A short but steep hike takes you to the impressive fortress of Assos. Here, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the bay and the rugged coastline.

Cycling on Kefalonia

Although Kefalonia is known for its hilly terrain, there are beautiful routes for adventurous cyclists. Mountain biking is popular in the hills, while the paved roads along the coast are ideal for road cyclists.

Recommended bike routes:

  • Fiskardo Loop (40 km): A beautiful coastal route.

Sea Turtles in Argostoli

You can easily spot sea turtles in the Koutavos Lagoon and the port of Argostoli. Volunteer organizations are dedicated to their protection.

Dolphins and monk seals

Dolphins and rare monk seals are regularly spotted in the waters around Kefalonia, especially near Fiskardo and the Gulf of Argostoli.

Ainos Dark Sky Park

For astronomy enthusiasts: the Dark Sky Park on Mount Ainos offers a spectacular view of the Milky Way and countless constellations.

Guided Hike on Mount Ainos

You can take this hike with an experienced English/Dutch-speaking guide. The following are included:

Guided Hike in Fiskardo

The hike starts in Fiskardo (about an hour’s drive from Argostoli). From the harbor, it takes about 3 to 4 hours to hike through the wilderness of the Fiskardo area. The route is 11 kilometers long.

Along the way, you’ll pass through beautiful old towns like Psilithrias, Frapata, and Antipata, as well as a hidden cove where you can take a refreshing dip. In the final stretch of the hike, you’ll pass another beautiful beach, Emblisi Beach, after which you’ll hike back toward Fiskardo.

The trip from Argastoli to Fiskardo and back is included. A picnic featuring traditional Greek foods will be held on the quiet little beach, and you’ll be provided with plenty of water for the hike. Cost: €74 per person for a group of up to 6 hikers.

Paths of Greece: Greece, a Top Hiking Destination

The organization Paths of Greece aims to make Greece one of the top 10 hiking destinations in the world.

In 2015, they marked out an 18-kilometer trail in northern Kefalonia. All the trails start from Fiskardo, a charming fishing village with nice little bars and restaurants. These are easy hikes, even in the summer, because the trees provide plenty of shade. They are beautiful hiking routes that take you past cultural and natural gems in the area that you can’t reach by car. The trails are well-maintained and constantly being expanded. Kefalonia is a wonderful place for road cycling. However, this does require some experience. Spring and fall are the best seasons for cycling on the island. Of course, you can also simply explore the island for fun—on a regular bike or an e-bike.

Practical Tips for Kefalonia

  • Best time to visit Kefalonia: In the spring (April–June), you’ll find beautiful wildflowers, including many varieties of orchids. The temperature is pleasant in the spring. Fall (September–October) is also a wonderful time to visit Kefalonia. After mid-September, the colors change and the temperature is pleasant.
  • E-bikes are handy on hilly terrain
  • Proper footwear: Many hiking trails are rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are a must.
  • Hydration: Always bring enough water with you, especially in the summer.
  • How do you get to Kefalonia? There are several ferries a day from mainland Greece to Kefalonia. You can also take a ferry to Sami on Kefalonia from Zakynthos and from Bari, Italy. Lefkada Palace is one of the ferry companies with the most departures. You can fly to Kefalonia with TUI-fly or Transavia.
