This city is alive! Naples is history, architecture, art, and wonderful people. It’s a fascinating city with so much to discover!
Overnight stay in Naples.

If you’d like to take a tour of Naples in Dutch, I recommend doing so with Iris from localinnaples. Iris lives near Naples with her Italian husband and leads walking and cycling tours on various themes, such as street art or food, in and around Naples. We did a mix of food and street art and were impressed by the mix of locals, architecture, and pizza, of course. If you’re already familiar with Naples, take the Circumvesuviana (subway) to Herculaneum—the alternative to Pompeii—or to Mount Vesuvius.

After saying goodbye to the hustle and bustle of Naples, take the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii. This fascinating site reveals a city that was destroyed yet, at the same time, preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. As you stroll along the paths of that era, it feels as if you’re reliving the distant past. During the summer months, Pompeii is packed with tourists. A good alternative is the somewhat quieter Herculaneum. In the afternoon, you’ll take a transfer to Amalfi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. As you stroll through the narrow streets, you’ll understand why.

Get ready for one of the most beautiful hiking trails on the Amalfi Coast: the Sentiero dei Limoni.
It is a picturesque route along the headland between the towns of Minori and Maiori.
After breakfast, you’ll reach the village of Maiori with a short bus ride.
As you walk along this trail, you’ll see the vast expanse of cultivated terraces. The scent of lemons wafts toward you. Here, lemons are grown using a special technique known as “sfusato amalfitano.”
As you pass through Minori, walk uphill toward the small village of Torello until you reach the church of San Michele Arcangelo, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the sea. Then head downhill toward Atrani to return to Amalfi.

The trail from Ravello to Amalfi—all downhill—is a special journey.
After breakfast, you’ll reach the town of Ravello—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—by public bus: 365 meters above sea level, with stunning landscapes and villas. The hiking trail from Ravello to Pontone is a nature trail featuring architectural elements from the era of the Duchy of Amalfi.
You’ll zigzag your way up through the terraces to the medieval village of Pontone. The final stretch continues through the Valle delle Ferriere and the Valle dei Mulini, where you’ll come across the ruins of old paper mills. The streams provided the paper mills with the energy they needed.

This route connects Amalfi with the village of Pogerola—a pleasant, shaded climb of 700 steps—and with the wooded part of the village, known for its chestnut groves. You’ll then walk along a beautiful stretch of the high trail through Valle delle Ferriere and turn off toward Mount Murillo: the trails are generally easy to walk on, but they are mountain trails.
The final stretch down a steep flight of stairs eventually leads to the small village of San Lazzaro di Agerola, where you’ll spend the night.

The Path of the Gods—Sentiero degli Dei—runs along the coastal trails of the Amalfi Coast, connecting the hamlet of Bomerano di Agerola with that of Nocelle di Positano.
The hike winds along a trail overlooking the sea; the view is one of the highlights of the Amalfi Coast. Along the approximately 8-kilometer route, you’ll pass the Grotta del Biscotto (the “cookie cave”), so named because of the brittleness of the rocks, and see the remains of the rock-cut architecture typical of this area.
Nature, sun, and sea await you on this roughly 4-hour hike along the Amalfi Coast, where the beauty of nature and the charming villages will make you forget any fatigue you might feel. The final descent takes you to the most elegant and famous town on the Amalfi Coast: Positano.
Return to Agerola by public transportation for your last night.
After breakfast, this walking tour comes to an end. But it’s worth taking a little time to stroll around here. Agerola boasts a rich architectural and scenic heritage: Lauritano Castle is a limestone stronghold surrounded by greenery. The Church of Santa Maria la Manna, the Church of San Matteo Apostolo, the Church of San Martino, and the Shrine of Maria SS. del Rosario are definitely worth a visit. Or check out the Ethno-Anthropological Museum, where the medieval processional cross is kept. If you’re interested in a hiking trip from Puglia to Basilicata, click here.
You can take the train to Naples in about 24 hours: NS International City Trips. You can also fly to Naples with Transavia. By car, it’s about 1,800 kilometers. Driving isn’t recommended because it’s difficult to drive or park in both Naples and along the Amalfi Coast. There are good public transportation connections once you’re there. The Circumvesuviano runs about every half hour between Naples and Sorrento. From Sorrento, you can continue by bus (Sita). You can buy tickets on site. The routes are generally well marked.
Of course, you can just arrange the itineraries and accommodations on your own.
Would you like to hike this trail but prefer not to handle the planning yourself? If so, you can also have this trip organized for you. In that case, you’ll just need to arrange your own transportation to Naples. The following is included:
