Discover the enchanting beauty of Southern Italy on a breathtaking road trip from Naples to Bari. This journey takes you through four unique regions: Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, and Puglia, each with its own character, natural beauty, and culture. Be inspired by our ultimate itinerary and helpful travel tips.

I think southern Italy is the most authentic part of Italy. We took this route from west to east, but of course you can also go the other way.
Start your adventure in vibrant Naples. Wander through the historic center, visit the impressive Mount Vesuvius, and enjoy the best pizza in the world.
Campania, home to the famous Amalfi Coast and the majestic Mount Vesuvius, offers a diverse natural landscape. The impressive cliffs of the Amalfi Coast offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea, while the inland area is dominated by the fertile soil of the Vesuvian Plain.
You can enjoy wonderful hikes along the trails of the Lattari Mountains, in the Cilento National Park, or along the Amalfi Coast. Tip: Avoid the high season. It gets very crowded with tourists from all over the world, and that can detract from your experience.

Travel tip: The regions of Basilicata and Calabria are less touristy, so you can experience authentic Italy here without the crowds.

Calabria is a still relatively undiscovered gem on the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts. The “toe of the boot” is home to some of Italy’s most unspoiled natural treasures. In addition to the stunning town of Tropea, the rugged coastline along the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas offers spectacular views and secluded beaches. The enchanting Aspromonte National Park , with its lush forests, mountain peaks, and crystal-clear rivers, is a haven for hikers and nature lovers.

End your road trip in sunny Puglia, known for its white trulli houses and beautiful coastlines.
Travel tip: You can fly back from Bari or Brindisi, or continue your journey by train.

Spring and fall are the best times for a road trip through Southern Italy. Personally, I think March and November are the best months because it’s wonderfully quiet. You’ll need to check whether hotels are open, though. Avoid the high season as much as possible. Southern Italy is very hot and is also a popular vacation destination for Italians themselves, which means it can get very crowded, especially in August. Plan for at least two weeks for a relaxing trip.
Choose eco-friendly accommodations to reduce your carbon footprint. By planning your trip for the early or late season, you’ll also be traveling more sustainably.
