Vulcano is the island where you can literally smell its Aeolian origins. Sulfur, steam, and hot rock set the tone here. Everything feels elemental: black sand, barren slopes, and a crater that constantly reminds you it’s still alive.
For me, Vulcano isn’t an island to stay on for long, but it is a place you can’t miss if you’re interested in nature, geology, and hiking on active volcanoes. The crater is fascinating and impressive.

The island is small but intense. The island revolves almost entirely around volcanic activity:
The landscape is rugged and open, with little vegetation. That is precisely why it feels so different from the green Salina or the lively Lipari.
In the complete guide to the Aeolian Islands , you’ll learn how Vulcano fits into the archipelago.

From upstairs, you can look out over:
Tip: Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon. It can get extremely hot during the day, and there’s very little shade. The trail to the crater is generally open from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., but be sure to check the signs carefully beforehand. Sometimes it’s closed due to the weather or volcanic gases.

The island is known for its natural mud baths and hot springs. Although these sites are popular, they are also vulnerable.
My advice:
You can swim at several spots along the coast, often with a view of the crater slopes.
How many days?
1 to 2 days is usually enough.

Many travelers combine a visit to the island with a trip to Lipari or Stromboli to enjoy the contrast.
It is precisely because of the landscape’s vulnerability that sustainable behavior is essential here.
